ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE
Sponsoring Summer Abroad and
Gap Year Abroad Programs for
High School Students
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE operates under Rotary International, having
more than 1.2 million members in over 33,000 Rotary Clubs across the world.
The sponsor coordinates almost 10,000 foreign student exchanges per year.
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE offers sponsorship for several study abroad
programs and scholarships, through which each selected student gets the
opportunity to learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly
become a global citizen. Students can choose from a short-term exchange in
the summer, a full academic year of high school, or a gap year.
In a freshly held educational conference, the spokesperson of ROTARY
YOUTH EXCHANGE revealed, “We now offer our short-term Summer Abroad
Exchange Program, which is ideal for those students who have a spirit of
adventure but who are not ready to spend a whole school year abroad. Open
to students aged between 15and19 years and ranging from several weeks to a
few months, this program usually takes place in the summer when the school is
not in session and does not include an academic program.”
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE’s summer abroad programs for high
school students typically involve a Rotary district-organized exchange of a
son or daughter between two families, but they may also take the form of
international youth camps or tours that bring together students from many
countries. As the time spent in the host country is relatively short, the tourist
visas and cheaper airfares make this extremely convenient and affordable.
However, applicants must check if this summer abroad exchange
opportunities are available in a specific Rotary district.
The spokesperson additionally shared, “Along with short-term summer abroad
programs, we sponsor our Gap Year Exchange program, which usually lasts
one academic year. A gap year is the academic school year immediately
following graduation from high school and before enrolling in college or
university studies. If students are currently a senior in high school and will
graduate next spring, they can still participate in our study abroad program,
provided they will not exceed 18.5 years of age by the time of departure after
graduation.”
Under the Gap Year Exchange program, students going abroad during their
gap year typically travel extensively with other high school exchange students.
They still need to attend high school in the country of their exchange because
these types of student exchange programs require student visas. The gap
year exchanges are a lot less stressful for students as no academic credits are
needed for graduation from their high school back home. Studying abroad as a
high school foreign exchange student is an immersion into the culture of
another country.
