Agile Planning Poker With Remote Teams

  1. 1. Agile Planning Poker With Remote Teams
  2. 2. When running Agile one of the challenges we are faced with is the ability to conduct Agile Planning Poker sessions with distributed teams. With the increase of remote teams, freelancers or home working, it’s often not practical to use the traditional Planning Poker Cards. http://studioalt.co
  3. 3. StudioAlt have explored, tried and summarised some alternative approaches to help you overcome the challenge of using Planning Poker with remote teams: ! http://studioalt.co
  4. 4. Online Version! ! Agile expert Mike Cohn and his company, Mountain Goat Software, offers an online version equivalent to their Agile Planning Poker Cards. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! It works best if you couple the tool with a conference call facility or video conference so you can all discuss each product backlog and estimates. There are a number of these conference tools available including Skype, Join.Me or Google Hangouts to help make it a seamless experience. http://studioalt.co
  5. 5. • It is free online tool which allows you to create a private session, essentially getting a private URL that can be shared among your estimators. ! • Once logged in you create your product backlog for the items that you wish to estimate before the estimators pick a story point vote, just like you would if playing in person with the physical cards. ! • Other features include a two minute timer to ensure discussions don’t stall along with the ability to export your results after your session is finished. http://studioalt.co
  6. 6. Google Spreadsheets! ! ! We’ve talked about using Google Apps in our previous blog post for collaborating in co-location environments and here is another great example of how these toolkits are proving very popular. This is very similar to the online tool provided by Mountain Goat Software though this time we are using Google Spreadsheets. http://studioalt.co
  7. 7. • Everyone involved in the session will open the same spreadsheet which shows the name of the estimators along with an empty cell below it. ! • You discuss the item from the product backlog before entering your estimate value, but not pressing enter straight away. ! • The Product Owner can see that everyone has entered a value when their respective box is highlighted Grey. ! • Once everybody has made their choice, the Product Owner counts down from 3 and everybody hits enter. ! • All values will appear on everyone’s screen and you will get to see what everybody has entered. http://studioalt.co
  8. 8. iOS App! ! It was only a matter of time that a mobile app appeared which featured Agile Planning Poker. 2014 has seen the release of an App for iOS by Agile Certification providers Radtac. ! http://studioalt.co
  9. 9. • This free to download app allows a Product Owner to read out the item from the product backlog and every estimator to use the app to select their estimate. ! • As expected it takes advantage of the iOS features such as swiping to navigate through the different values and doubletapping to hide and reveal your estimate. ! • This method does rely on every estimator having access to an iOS device, including iPhone, iPad and iPod. ! • Unlike the PlanningPoker.com and Google Spreadsheets it doesn’t log your previous estimates so make sure you are recording the estimates for each product backlog item. http://studioalt.co
  10. 10. These solutions will negate the issue of needing all your resource to be in the same room with physical set of Planning Poker cards. ! ! ! ! ! Of cause in the scenario where you don’t face these challenges, there are always the traditional Agile Planning Cards supplied by ourselves at http://studioalt.co and despatched the same day. http://studioalt.co
  11. 11. Suppliers of Planning Poker Cards " We can’t get enough of Planning Poker cards by Mountain Goat Software so we’ve gone all out to make sure Planning Poker Cards are available within the UK "
