  2. 2. What is an ABC Poem? <ul><li>An ABC poem usually has 5 lines, sometimes it is a little longer </li></ul><ul><li>it creates a mood, picture, or feeling </li></ul><ul><li>It can start with any letter in the alphabet but lines 2-4 must start with the next letter that follows </li></ul>
  3. 3. Lines and Syllables <ul><li>There is no specific number of syllables for this poem </li></ul><ul><li>Lines 1 through 4 are made up of words, phrases or clauses </li></ul><ul><li>The first word of each line (1-4) is in alphabetical order from the first word (ex. G-J, P-S, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Line 5 is one sentence, beginning with any letter. </li></ul>

What Next? <ul><li>Decide what you want to write about (pick a topic) </li></ul><ul><li>Brainstorm about that topic, writing down all words and phrases that you can think of </li></ul><ul><li>Look at all your words and choose what letter you want to start with, most start with the letter “A” until they get the hang of things </li></ul>
  5. 5. Example <ul><li>Topic – Ice Cream </li></ul><ul><li>Brainstorm – cold, drippy, cone, nice to eat on a hot day, chocolate my favorite, summertime, hot, good, fun, sundaes, toppings, treat, and sweet </li></ul><ul><li>Choose your letter – I think I will start with “C” </li></ul>
  6. 6. Ice Cream <ul><li>C hocolate is my favorite </li></ul><ul><li>D ripping down my hand </li></ul><ul><li>E ating it quickly </li></ul><ul><li>F earing that it will melt </li></ul><ul><li>What a wonderful treat on a hot summer day! </li></ul>
