Nor are they prepared for the financialburdens involved. But both the emotional andfinancial costs of caring for the elderly can be evengreater if the signs of illness are caught later, ratherthan sooner.Who’s at risk?An estimated 7 million older adults are havingdifficulty performing everyday activities and will needassisted living services this year, according to theNational Academy on an Aging Society. That figureis expected to rise to 12 million by 2030.Another study, by the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services, indicated that 65-year olds face atleast a 40% risk of entering a nursing home. Answering the followingquestions will indicate whether a loved one has --Has there been a change in living habits, manifestedretained the ability to live independently or in dress or appearance, or a decline in personalwhether intervention is necessary hygiene not related to physical disability?Independent living test --Is dress appropiate for the weather?Medications: --Have housekeeping habits changed so that a normally neat and orderly home is now cluttered--Are prescriptions not being refilled, resulting in and not cleaned regularly?failure to take medication when scheduled? --Are pets that were normally well cared for suddenly--Has taking medication become difficult due to poor not being fed or cared for as they had been in thememory or confusion? Evidence may include: pills past?taken together that shouldn’t be, different pillsmixed together in a pill box, or an over-or Solicitations:undersupply of pills. --Is there a sudden increase in ordering unnecessary--Have conditions previously under control become items through mail or televised advertisements?acute because medication is not being takencorrectly? Calls to family members or health care providers:Food and groceries: --Has there been a marked increase in panicked calls to family or medical providers without apparent--Based on past food habits, are the cupboards need?frequently empty or being filled with unusal foods? --Have unnecessary calls been made to 911?--Is the food in the refrigerator often spoiled or keptlong beyond the “use by ” date? Think ahead While it may be difficult to think of a parent or familyDaily business: member as needing assistance, it may be a greater disservice not to get them the care they need as--Is the mail being picked up and opened regularly, early as possible.or is it remaining uncollected and/or unopened? There are a number of resources available for those--Are credit cards or checkbooks being misused or who are caring for an aging relative. These are justnot balanced as well as in the past? a few:Social contact: Aging Parents and Elder Care ( American Association for Home Care--Has the amount of social contact changed ( American Society on Agingdramatically, so that there are few public outings ( limited social visits with close friends? Caregiving ( Children of Aging Parents--Has the ability to drive deteriorated? Is there a fear ( National Alliance for Caregivingof driving or a recent history of multiple minor ( that is leading to isolation?
