Assessment 1: Fashion Research Subject Name: Thinking Fashion Subject Number: 83119
Assessment Weighting: 50% Submission Date: Canvas Upload and Presentation In-Studio.
Week 6, Thursday, 30th March LEARNING OBJECTIVES The following Subject Learning
Objectives relate to this assessment task: 1. To become adept in design development skills
for fashion through active analogue methods including sketching and collage (SLO2) 2. To
increase the ability to apply design thinking in a conceptually informed design process and
develop the capacity to explore a creative interpretation of conceptual and physical ideas
into individual design solutions (SLO3) 3. To develop communication skills for appropriate
visual and written representation of conceptual and physical design ideas in fashion and
textiles (SLO4) 4. To develop proficiency in design language and concepts, to acquire an
understanding of the elements and principles of design and their potential for creative
applications in fashion and textile design (SLO5) PREAMBLE This assessment is designed to
allow you to incrementally develop design research skills and an individual creative
practice for fashion. Weekly Studio Design Tasks from Weeks 1-5, will introduce you to a
range of creative practices for fashion, design methods and conceptual design challenges. A
variety of active design methods will be explored including collage, congregative and
collaborative design, and working with fabrics and body forms. Focus for these tasks is on
developing your skills in varied design research processes. You will develop a rich and
experimental body of research, undertaking these tasks and conducting your own research.
A ‘Creative Process Journal’ will collate all of this research and experimentation, and will
document your process of investigations, reading annotations, studio notes and reflections.
This journal is an informal space to creatively and freely express your working and to
reflect on the work you are completing. Creative Process Journal In Studio sessions (face-to-
face for local students and online learning for remote students) across weeks 1-5, you will
explore a series of topics in studios. Each of these topics will give you the opportunity to
explore creative strategies employed in fashion design. You will be led through a design task
to undertake in studio and to complete at home. All working is to be completed in an A4/A3
page Process Journal. This Process Journal is to accompany you to all studio sessions.
Remote Online Learning Only: Please select a website hosting platform such as WIX or
Squarespace to host the work for your process journal. A nice approach is to complete work
in a paper journal and upload these pages to an online platform alongside further research
and content. There are several platforms that allow you to catalogue and upload different
forms of media. It is important that you are able to share the link to the platform to tutors.
For your online Process Journal, please create content folders in chronological order (titled
Week 1, Week 2 etc) and include all notes, experimentation and research in these folders.
The (paper/online) process journal requires: 1. Reflections on Weekly Readings –
handwritten or printed typed notes on the weekly readings (weekly readings are uploaded
to canvas in modules). 2. Studio notes – handwritten or printed typed notes taken from
studio discussions. 3. Studio Tasks and Experimentation and working for all studio tasks -
such as handwritten and printed text, printed images, sketches, collage, draping, mark
making etc, with annotations where necessary.
4.Self-directed additional research – such as a discussion topic that you research in
yourown time, finding articles, images or other related media and including these in your
journal.5.Overall Reflections and thoughts related to subject topics and assessing your own
work. The Process Journal must be accessible in each studio and tutors will be asking to see
work and tasks completed each week in your journal. Your Process Journal should show all
of your experimentation, annotations, reflections and working as you complete the studio
tasks. Please make sure to feature the final outcomes of each task in your journal.
Submission: Presentation Week 6 Thursday, Thursday, 30th March In studio you will
professionally present your work to your peers and tutors for marking. Please take
images/scan key pages of your journal and the final outcomes for each of the studio tasks
and feature these in a short presentation: 1.Fashionable Bodies; Collage and
Deconstruction2.Fashion and Fabrics3.Congregation/Collective Design4.First Nations
Fashion: profiles of a current First Nations fashion designer, textile designer, stylistand a
photographer5.Fashion Body Forms6.Closing Statement and Reflection –What is Fashion
Research? In your own words and dotpoints to outline some key reflections on the work
you have completed. This presentation is informal and more of a round table opportunity for
feedback and support from your tutor and peers. You will have approx. 5 minutes to
present. Students are required to attend the presentations and must arrive at uni 10mins
before the start of the studio session, to avoid being marked as a late submission.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR THIS TASK 1.I-2 Process Journal shows an experimental and
exploratory approach to design tasks.2.R-5 Process Journal shows evidence of weekly
progress and increased proficiency in individual self- directed learning, design thinking and
understanding of fashion design practice.3.R-1 Process Journal shows proficiency in ability
to undertake written and visual research, with a varietyof visual and written methods used
including clear comprehension of First Nations Fashion.4.C-2 strong and clear
communication skills; layouts are clean and professionally presented withappropriate
visual and written representation of conceptual and physical outcomes.5.R-4 Work
showcases a strong body of work, with tasks showing a strong capacity to interpret
andcomprehend complex conceptual and visual ideas in completion of all design tasks.6.P-7

WORK AND EXTENSIONS: Special consideration is intended to provide equitable academic
treatment for students whose performance in an assessment task that has been significantly
affected by extenuating or special circumstances beyond their control such as illness,
misadventure or other circumstances. Special consideration is not automatically granted
and may not result in a study or mark adjustment. It is important that you finalise all
requests for special consideration prior to the due date for assessment. Potential
circumstances 1.Serious illness or psychological condition2.Hardship or trauma3.Loss or
bereavement4.Exceptional employment demandsFor extensions under 1 week: Email the
subject coordinator, outlining reasons for extension, the amount of time requested and
attach correct supporting documentation. All special consideration applications must
include current supporting documents as evidence to support your claim. You may be
required
to supply originals of these documents at any time during your studies at the University.
The supporting documents must clearly indicate the severity and/or gravity of the
circumstances and include the period of time you were affected (e.g. the start and end date
of your illness, injury or misadventure). Special consideration applications will be declined
if no documentation is provided or the documentation provided does not support your
claims. For extensions greater than 1 week: If you are applying for an extension greater
than one week you are required to submit an online request through
http://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/classes-and-
assessment/special-circumstances/special Work submitted 1 week after the published due
date will not be assessed unless prior arrangements have been made with the subject
coordinator. It is advisable to contact the subject coordinator at the earliest possible
opportunity if such a case occurs. This information is included in more detail within the
subject outline for this subject. Refer to the University’s guidelines regarding Academic
integrity and cheating in the Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures manual -
Section 4.4. Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures Students are expected to refer

1 Assessment 2: Fashion Body of Work Subject Name: Thinking Fashion Subject Number:
83119 Submission date: A1 Week Thursday 1st June, 9am Where: Canvas Digital
Submission, 9am deadline Presentation location to be notified to students 1 week prior. A
schedule for presentations will also be sent out, based on class roles. Assessment weighting:
50% PREAMBLE: The task brings together skills and knowledge acquired through the
Task 1: Design Portfolio. From Assessment Task 1 and the Thinking Fashion lecture series
you have been introduced to the way fashion designers research and develop a ‘creative
practice’ drawing on a vast range of practices (working with fabrics, mark making, draping
on the stand etc), discourses / written research (concepts, ideas, articles, etc) and visual
research (collage, image-making etc). You have explored sketch, collage, exploratory drape
and image manipulation. For this assessment you will put these skills into practice towards
a self-directed body of work. You will use your research skills to create a rich body of
research towards a final fashion outcome. For this Assessment Task you will undertake
your own self-directed research and experimentation for a chosen concept. You will be
using this body of work to directly inform a final fashion outcome. This is a speculative
project meaning that designs will be illustrated - you will not be required to construct all
items. It is important to be decisive and move through a variety of different experimental
exploratory tasks, avoid laboring over single tasks and aim for a diverse approach to
research. The focus here is to create rich body of work that you can then draw from for your
Fashion Series. ASSESSMENT TASK 2 In studio sessions, you will be creating a body of
Design Research, from written research, reading and interviewing to creating images,
collaging and draping etc. You will be collecting this experimental body of work in a process
journal. This research will inform a final fashion series. For submission you will be
presenting this in a ‘Lookbook.’ This brief outlines the two components of this Assessment
Task: 1. Design Research 2. Fashion Series Please read it carefully.
2 Part A - Design Research You are to choose one of the following themes, that we have
touched on in studios and lecture series: 1. Image - the constructed, the imagined. De
Perthuis, K., & Findlay, R. (2019). How fashion travels: The fashionable ideal in the age of
Instagram. Fashion theory, 23(2), 219-242. 2. Object/Form – the fashion item as object and
the interaction between body and fabric. Catterall, K. (2017). Clothing as Shelter: An
Experiment in Ontological Designing. Fashion Practice, 9(1), 30-47. 3. Space - the
performance of the dressed body in space, movement and installation. Bugg, J. (2009).
Fashion at the interface: Designer—wearer—viewer. Fashion Practice, 1(1), 9-31. This
theme will guide this design research work and your final collection design. These themes
are umbrella concepts. You need to create a succinct 3-sentence statement that captures
your much more specific idea that you wish to explore for this body of work (due Week 8
for discussion with your tutor in studio.) This statement will guide the work that you
undertake and all aspects of your Design Research must respond to your chosen concept.
Process Journal: This is where all the messy and experimental research work goes along
with reflections and rough notes. You are to conduct research into your chosen concept, in
this Process Journal – (this can be the continued from A1). Initial Written research –
explore what others have discussed in relation to your concept. Collect a series of articles,
online sources, academic texts, and annotate and develop your own reflections and
statements. This research could also include interviews, discussions, conversations that you
are able to document and analyse. You are then to move onto more creative explorations of
your concept. Choose minimum x 3 of the following tasks to complete. All working to be
shown in your journal. 1. Working with Images - 5 x Collage outcomes. 2. Fabric
Experimentation - 5 x resolved final fabric manipulations (no smaller than A5). 3. New
‘Fashion Body’ Garment - using the stand, pad it out, using recycled garments, and gathered
materials cut and shape and construct a final garment shape. This garment is to be sewn up
and wearable. 4. Illustration series x 5 colour illustrations of any medium. 5. Photography
series x 5 curated outcomes. 6. Sculpture series x 3 resolved outcomes of any medium. 7.
Drape experimentation – Zero waste pattern cutting or other creative garment construction
method. 8. Collaborative design task – working with others create a fashion look through
combining fabric pieces together (Join Collective). 9. Film piece - a curated digital film. 10.
Research Task of your Own Choice - discuss what you are planning with your tutor for
approval. These tasks are to be completed in studio and continued work at home. Tutors
will be weekly discussing the progress of this body of work and providing verbal feedback
in studio. Remember, be decisive, and move through a variety of different experimental
exploratory tasks, avoid labouring over work and perfectionism. We want to see rich,
experimental work.
3 Part B - Fashion Series Working under the guidance of your design studio tutor you will
generate a final fashion series. Drawing on your rich body of research (Part A) you are to
create a series of 3 looks. These should be developed through a combination of methods but
should begin with drape, using sustainably sourced materials. Process: You are develop the
final 3x looks should be derived from a series of iterations, experimentation and
investigation into materials. You can employ existing techniques such as collaborative
approaches of Join Collective or zero waste pattern cutting techniques such as the work of
Subtraction Cutting or devise your own. 3x looks are to consist of a series of conceptual
garments – showcase an experimental approach/method relevant to the concepts and ideas
you are exploring. You should translate these drape iterations into 3 x looks, this should
inform your illustrative design work. Lookbook: The final 3x looks are to be presented
within a lookbook. This is professionally presented document which showcases your work
and presents your final 3x looks via creative fashion illustration and precise technical
drawings. Think about a creative form of presentation for this if it makes sense for your
project e.g. a concertina, series of posters, etc. You are required to print this for your
presentation and provide a digital PDF for submission. Student Work Example Remote
learning students - digital format only e.g.. website, PDF, interactive PDF, film etc. Please
include the following: 1. Title of Project 2. Design Statement (3 sentence) 3. Design
Research – curate images of your Part A - Design Research 4. Drape Documentation -
Photograph each of your drapes on a form (form as defined by you), front, back and side
view. You can also include any other images of more evocative poses. 5. 3x Look Illustrated
Line up a. Full Body, Colour, Fashion Illustrations of all 3x looks - your choice of medium. 6.
Technical Sketches: a. Detailed Technical sketches, front, back and side view of each
conceptual garment in black and white only. These should not be transparent, but ‘filled in’
with white. b. Short Description (10-word max) Make sure that you are considering the
construction and workability of the design on the body in both your technical sketches and
fashion illustrations. Don’t forget closures, all seams, drape lines and shadows. Use Adobe
Illustrator Fashion Brushes that you have produced in Fashion Illustration Fundamentals. A
good resource for tech sketches is the ‘CADS/Flats’ and ‘Brushes’ available through WGSN –
Design Resources accessible through the library. 7. Unwrapping of Garment Construction –
There are different ways that you can communicate a garment design technically. Create a
simple visualisation to show the patterns for several of your designs where this would
assist in understanding. This is especially important if it is a zero-waste pattern cutting
project – show in general how the fabric pieces connect together in your design. This does
not have to be exactly measured but shows a basic understanding of how the pieces are to
be constructed. Consider sketch, photography, 3D modelling, film etc. Student Example
4 8. Final Fabrics - curate fabrics for each of the garments. There must be 3x minimum
fabric manipulations – where you have used a textiles technique to change the fabric surface
e.g. print, thermo-plastic techniques, shibori, hand stitching and embroidery etc. Pay
particular attention to fabrication, finishes and fibre content. Professionally present fabrics
on a Material Board. Inspiration examples below: Think about aesthetics here and
purposefully select fabrics that work well together as well as in the shape. Only sustainable
approaches; consider repurposing discarded garments / fabrics, surplus stock found in
Reverse Garbage or other recycle centres etc. SUBMISSION: 1. Canvas Upload, Thursday
1st June, 9am Please upload your lookbook as a single PDF to Canvas. If working remotely
please also upload a link to your Process Journal website. 2. Presentation, Thursday, 2nd
June from 9am. Ref: https://pin.it/2N8hol2
5 Presentations will be held in a panel format. Details on time of presentations will be
shared with students closer to the date. At the start of your presentation please give to your
tutor or install: •Printed lookbook•Process JournalPlease bring your laptop with your
presentation ready to project in the studio and present your Lookbook in a 5-10minute
presentation. All work is to be taken home with you after presentation. Please discuss the
following in your presentation; 1.Reflect on the process of designing –what are your
reflections on your own learning, what doyou want to become better at and how can you
support your weaknesses.2.Present the features of your work – outline areas where you
wish to develop your skills and howyou will go about developing these skills.3.Design
Direction – How have you interpreted your theme and what have you learned about howto
research and develop a body of work for fashion design.ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 1.Research
presents a thorough investigation and intellectual discourse around chosen
theme.2.Conceptual development of the work is derived from the student’s body of research
and utilises strong andclear interpretive skills in developing a clear, thoughtful and complex
design strategy for their fashioncollection.3.Development of garment designs has been
undertaken to a high standard with different forms andmediums explored in the generation
of design ideas, maintaining an exploratory and experimentalapproach to
fashion.4.Innovative approaches to design thinking including conceptual and practical
design developmentdemonstrating originality and creativity are evident in the design
project.5.Communication of the collection in Fashion Illustrations and technical sketches
shows care and rigor, with fashion bodies relevant to the sector and a strong technical
sensibility and constructionknowledge. All relevant and essential details shown with
correct, industry standard illustrativepractices.6.Fabrications and/or manipulations
developed are relevant to fashion and the body, and show anattention to fabrication,
aesthetics and sustainable practice, integrated well into the
designedcollection.7.Communication of the collection in technical sketches shows care,
rigor and student has been engagedin studio and consistent in development of weekly work,
showing self-directed learning, problem solvingand responsive to constructive
criticism.LATE WORK AND EXTENSIONS: Special consideration is intended to provide

The a-s-s-e-s-s-m-e-n-t will A1: Fashion Research A2: Fashion Body of Work Please see the questions shown in the screenshot. I will send you all the info after being hired, eg PPTs, student access etc. Please send a draft in 12hrs -1 day time, day 2, and day 3 as well. + Will need to draft some questions to ask the teacher and revise base on feedback (Send bk ard in 1 day max) Requirements: 2 hours Assessment 1: Fashion Research Subject Name: Thinking Fashion Subject Number: 83119 Assessment Weighting: 50% Submission Date: Canvas Upload and Presentation In-Studio. Week 6, Thursday, 30th March LEARNING OBJECTIVES The following Subject Learning Objectives relate to this assessment task: 1. To become adept in design development skills for fashion through active analogue methods including sketching and collage (SLO2) 2. To increase the ability to apply design thinking in a conceptually informed design process and develop the capacity to explore a creative interpretation of conceptual and physical ideas into individual design solutions (SLO3) 3. To develop communication skills for appropriate visual and written representation of conceptual and physical design ideas in fashion and textiles (SLO4) 4. To develop proficiency in design language and concepts, to acquire an understanding of the elements and principles of design and their potential for creative applications in fashion and textile design (SLO5) PREAMBLE This assessment is designed to allow you to incrementally develop design research skills and an individual creative practice for fashion. Weekly Studio Design Tasks from Weeks 1-5, will introduce you to a range of creative practices for fashion, design methods and conceptual design challenges. A variety of active design methods will be explored including collage, congregative and collaborative design, and working with fabrics and body forms. Focus for these tasks is on developing your skills in varied design research processes. You will develop a rich and experimental body of research, undertaking these tasks and conducting your own research. A ‘Creative Process Journal’ will collate all of this research and experimentation, and will document your process of investigations, reading annotations, studio notes and reflections. This journal is an informal space to creatively and freely express your working and to reflect on the work you are completing. Creative Process Journal In Studio sessions (face-to-
  • 2. face for local students and online learning for remote students) across weeks 1-5, you will explore a series of topics in studios. Each of these topics will give you the opportunity to explore creative strategies employed in fashion design. You will be led through a design task to undertake in studio and to complete at home. All working is to be completed in an A4/A3 page Process Journal. This Process Journal is to accompany you to all studio sessions. Remote Online Learning Only: Please select a website hosting platform such as WIX or Squarespace to host the work for your process journal. A nice approach is to complete work in a paper journal and upload these pages to an online platform alongside further research and content. There are several platforms that allow you to catalogue and upload different forms of media. It is important that you are able to share the link to the platform to tutors. For your online Process Journal, please create content folders in chronological order (titled Week 1, Week 2 etc) and include all notes, experimentation and research in these folders. The (paper/online) process journal requires: 1. Reflections on Weekly Readings – handwritten or printed typed notes on the weekly readings (weekly readings are uploaded to canvas in modules). 2. Studio notes – handwritten or printed typed notes taken from studio discussions. 3. Studio Tasks and Experimentation and working for all studio tasks - such as handwritten and printed text, printed images, sketches, collage, draping, mark making etc, with annotations where necessary. 4.Self-directed additional research – such as a discussion topic that you research in yourown time, finding articles, images or other related media and including these in your journal.5.Overall Reflections and thoughts related to subject topics and assessing your own work. The Process Journal must be accessible in each studio and tutors will be asking to see work and tasks completed each week in your journal. Your Process Journal should show all of your experimentation, annotations, reflections and working as you complete the studio tasks. Please make sure to feature the final outcomes of each task in your journal. Submission: Presentation Week 6 Thursday, Thursday, 30th March In studio you will professionally present your work to your peers and tutors for marking. Please take images/scan key pages of your journal and the final outcomes for each of the studio tasks and feature these in a short presentation: 1.Fashionable Bodies; Collage and Deconstruction2.Fashion and Fabrics3.Congregation/Collective Design4.First Nations Fashion: profiles of a current First Nations fashion designer, textile designer, stylistand a photographer5.Fashion Body Forms6.Closing Statement and Reflection –What is Fashion Research? In your own words and dotpoints to outline some key reflections on the work you have completed. This presentation is informal and more of a round table opportunity for feedback and support from your tutor and peers. You will have approx. 5 minutes to present. Students are required to attend the presentations and must arrive at uni 10mins before the start of the studio session, to avoid being marked as a late submission. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR THIS TASK 1.I-2 Process Journal shows an experimental and exploratory approach to design tasks.2.R-5 Process Journal shows evidence of weekly progress and increased proficiency in individual self- directed learning, design thinking and understanding of fashion design practice.3.R-1 Process Journal shows proficiency in ability to undertake written and visual research, with a varietyof visual and written methods used including clear comprehension of First Nations Fashion.4.C-2 strong and clear
  • 3. communication skills; layouts are clean and professionally presented withappropriate visual and written representation of conceptual and physical outcomes.5.R-4 Work showcases a strong body of work, with tasks showing a strong capacity to interpret andcomprehend complex conceptual and visual ideas in completion of all design tasks.6.P-7 Student has been engaged in studio and consistent in development of weekly work.LATE WORK AND EXTENSIONS: Special consideration is intended to provide equitable academic treatment for students whose performance in an assessment task that has been significantly affected by extenuating or special circumstances beyond their control such as illness, misadventure or other circumstances. Special consideration is not automatically granted and may not result in a study or mark adjustment. It is important that you finalise all requests for special consideration prior to the due date for assessment. Potential circumstances 1.Serious illness or psychological condition2.Hardship or trauma3.Loss or bereavement4.Exceptional employment demandsFor extensions under 1 week: Email the subject coordinator, outlining reasons for extension, the amount of time requested and attach correct supporting documentation. All special consideration applications must include current supporting documents as evidence to support your claim. You may be required to supply originals of these documents at any time during your studies at the University. The supporting documents must clearly indicate the severity and/or gravity of the circumstances and include the period of time you were affected (e.g. the start and end date of your illness, injury or misadventure). Special consideration applications will be declined if no documentation is provided or the documentation provided does not support your claims. For extensions greater than 1 week: If you are applying for an extension greater than one week you are required to submit an online request through http://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/classes-and- assessment/special-circumstances/special Work submitted 1 week after the published due date will not be assessed unless prior arrangements have been made with the subject coordinator. It is advisable to contact the subject coordinator at the earliest possible opportunity if such a case occurs. This information is included in more detail within the subject outline for this subject. Refer to the University’s guidelines regarding Academic integrity and cheating in the Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures manual - Section 4.4. Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures Students are expected to refer to the following information in conjunction with information about assessment at UTS which is published in "The UTS Coursework Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual" (2002 pp18-22) available via the UTS Website at 1 Assessment 2: Fashion Body of Work Subject Name: Thinking Fashion Subject Number: 83119 Submission date: A1 Week Thursday 1st June, 9am Where: Canvas Digital Submission, 9am deadline Presentation location to be notified to students 1 week prior. A schedule for presentations will also be sent out, based on class roles. Assessment weighting: 50% PREAMBLE: The task brings together skills and knowledge acquired through the Task 1: Design Portfolio. From Assessment Task 1 and the Thinking Fashion lecture series you have been introduced to the way fashion designers research and develop a ‘creative practice’ drawing on a vast range of practices (working with fabrics, mark making, draping
  • 4. on the stand etc), discourses / written research (concepts, ideas, articles, etc) and visual research (collage, image-making etc). You have explored sketch, collage, exploratory drape and image manipulation. For this assessment you will put these skills into practice towards a self-directed body of work. You will use your research skills to create a rich body of research towards a final fashion outcome. For this Assessment Task you will undertake your own self-directed research and experimentation for a chosen concept. You will be using this body of work to directly inform a final fashion outcome. This is a speculative project meaning that designs will be illustrated - you will not be required to construct all items. It is important to be decisive and move through a variety of different experimental exploratory tasks, avoid laboring over single tasks and aim for a diverse approach to research. The focus here is to create rich body of work that you can then draw from for your Fashion Series. ASSESSMENT TASK 2 In studio sessions, you will be creating a body of Design Research, from written research, reading and interviewing to creating images, collaging and draping etc. You will be collecting this experimental body of work in a process journal. This research will inform a final fashion series. For submission you will be presenting this in a ‘Lookbook.’ This brief outlines the two components of this Assessment Task: 1. Design Research 2. Fashion Series Please read it carefully. 2 Part A - Design Research You are to choose one of the following themes, that we have touched on in studios and lecture series: 1. Image - the constructed, the imagined. De Perthuis, K., & Findlay, R. (2019). How fashion travels: The fashionable ideal in the age of Instagram. Fashion theory, 23(2), 219-242. 2. Object/Form – the fashion item as object and the interaction between body and fabric. Catterall, K. (2017). Clothing as Shelter: An Experiment in Ontological Designing. Fashion Practice, 9(1), 30-47. 3. Space - the performance of the dressed body in space, movement and installation. Bugg, J. (2009). Fashion at the interface: Designer—wearer—viewer. Fashion Practice, 1(1), 9-31. This theme will guide this design research work and your final collection design. These themes are umbrella concepts. You need to create a succinct 3-sentence statement that captures your much more specific idea that you wish to explore for this body of work (due Week 8 for discussion with your tutor in studio.) This statement will guide the work that you undertake and all aspects of your Design Research must respond to your chosen concept. Process Journal: This is where all the messy and experimental research work goes along with reflections and rough notes. You are to conduct research into your chosen concept, in this Process Journal – (this can be the continued from A1). Initial Written research – explore what others have discussed in relation to your concept. Collect a series of articles, online sources, academic texts, and annotate and develop your own reflections and statements. This research could also include interviews, discussions, conversations that you are able to document and analyse. You are then to move onto more creative explorations of your concept. Choose minimum x 3 of the following tasks to complete. All working to be shown in your journal. 1. Working with Images - 5 x Collage outcomes. 2. Fabric Experimentation - 5 x resolved final fabric manipulations (no smaller than A5). 3. New ‘Fashion Body’ Garment - using the stand, pad it out, using recycled garments, and gathered materials cut and shape and construct a final garment shape. This garment is to be sewn up and wearable. 4. Illustration series x 5 colour illustrations of any medium. 5. Photography
  • 5. series x 5 curated outcomes. 6. Sculpture series x 3 resolved outcomes of any medium. 7. Drape experimentation – Zero waste pattern cutting or other creative garment construction method. 8. Collaborative design task – working with others create a fashion look through combining fabric pieces together (Join Collective). 9. Film piece - a curated digital film. 10. Research Task of your Own Choice - discuss what you are planning with your tutor for approval. These tasks are to be completed in studio and continued work at home. Tutors will be weekly discussing the progress of this body of work and providing verbal feedback in studio. Remember, be decisive, and move through a variety of different experimental exploratory tasks, avoid labouring over work and perfectionism. We want to see rich, experimental work. 3 Part B - Fashion Series Working under the guidance of your design studio tutor you will generate a final fashion series. Drawing on your rich body of research (Part A) you are to create a series of 3 looks. These should be developed through a combination of methods but should begin with drape, using sustainably sourced materials. Process: You are develop the final 3x looks should be derived from a series of iterations, experimentation and investigation into materials. You can employ existing techniques such as collaborative approaches of Join Collective or zero waste pattern cutting techniques such as the work of Subtraction Cutting or devise your own. 3x looks are to consist of a series of conceptual garments – showcase an experimental approach/method relevant to the concepts and ideas you are exploring. You should translate these drape iterations into 3 x looks, this should inform your illustrative design work. Lookbook: The final 3x looks are to be presented within a lookbook. This is professionally presented document which showcases your work and presents your final 3x looks via creative fashion illustration and precise technical drawings. Think about a creative form of presentation for this if it makes sense for your project e.g. a concertina, series of posters, etc. You are required to print this for your presentation and provide a digital PDF for submission. Student Work Example Remote learning students - digital format only e.g.. website, PDF, interactive PDF, film etc. Please include the following: 1. Title of Project 2. Design Statement (3 sentence) 3. Design Research – curate images of your Part A - Design Research 4. Drape Documentation - Photograph each of your drapes on a form (form as defined by you), front, back and side view. You can also include any other images of more evocative poses. 5. 3x Look Illustrated Line up a. Full Body, Colour, Fashion Illustrations of all 3x looks - your choice of medium. 6. Technical Sketches: a. Detailed Technical sketches, front, back and side view of each conceptual garment in black and white only. These should not be transparent, but ‘filled in’ with white. b. Short Description (10-word max) Make sure that you are considering the construction and workability of the design on the body in both your technical sketches and fashion illustrations. Don’t forget closures, all seams, drape lines and shadows. Use Adobe Illustrator Fashion Brushes that you have produced in Fashion Illustration Fundamentals. A good resource for tech sketches is the ‘CADS/Flats’ and ‘Brushes’ available through WGSN – Design Resources accessible through the library. 7. Unwrapping of Garment Construction – There are different ways that you can communicate a garment design technically. Create a simple visualisation to show the patterns for several of your designs where this would assist in understanding. This is especially important if it is a zero-waste pattern cutting
  • 6. project – show in general how the fabric pieces connect together in your design. This does not have to be exactly measured but shows a basic understanding of how the pieces are to be constructed. Consider sketch, photography, 3D modelling, film etc. Student Example 4 8. Final Fabrics - curate fabrics for each of the garments. There must be 3x minimum fabric manipulations – where you have used a textiles technique to change the fabric surface e.g. print, thermo-plastic techniques, shibori, hand stitching and embroidery etc. Pay particular attention to fabrication, finishes and fibre content. Professionally present fabrics on a Material Board. Inspiration examples below: Think about aesthetics here and purposefully select fabrics that work well together as well as in the shape. Only sustainable approaches; consider repurposing discarded garments / fabrics, surplus stock found in Reverse Garbage or other recycle centres etc. SUBMISSION: 1.
