How to help a drug addict brother

In the continues fight with drug addiction, dealing with your addict loved ones is
extremely difficult, as a lot of guilt and pity may stand on the way to their
recovery. The type of relationship that you might have with your husband,
boyfriend or a friend, while dealing with their drug addiction problem, might be
different from the type of relationship you have with a family member who is
experiencing the same issue. The approach to your family member’s drug
addiction problem can be even perplexing to deal with. You grew up with your
brother , you shared your childhood ,home and many adolescent experiences
with him. Your special relationship goes beyond friendship, it will always be a part
of who you are, and you can never detach yourself from him or his life. If your
brother is having a drug addiction problem, it is hard to face this kind of reality, as
you would never imagine that something as horrible as this could ever happen to
your family. If your brother is in denial for his drug addiction problem, it is even
more difficult to confront him, as you are instantly retract to you tender
relationship with him, and the last thing you want to do is to make him feel bad or
hurt his feelings.

There are many signs you can observe in your brother’s behavior, that are
attributed to a drug addiction problem. Frequently, someone who is suffering
from drug addiction might distance himself from his family and friends to avoid
bringing painful truth in to his family’s life. Depending on the stage of drug
addiction, the addict could lose his job, home and start asking for money. Other
signs may include, skin problems, lose of weight, respiratory problems, sloppy
clothing, lack of hygiene.

If you want to help your brother with his drug addiction problem, you have to
have a serious talk with him. You need to be able to relate to him that he has a
problem, and how to help a drug addict brother affecting his life, his health and
his family. You have a chance to come from a familiar and loving place, and be a
no-threatening “opponent”, as you will be coming from a point of opposition and
confrontation.

Another important aspect to how to help a drug addict brother with his drug
addiction is to avoid giving him the money. Unintentionally, you will be helping
him to continue buying and using drugs, therefore enabling him. You can love
your brother, and let him know of that all the time, however make it clear that
because of your unconditional love, you do not want to support his drug
addiction. You also have to anticipate your brother drug addiction desperation,
and be careful when leave him alone in your house. In the middle of his
desperation, your brother might be driven to stealing from you. Drug addicts will
do just about anything in order to get drugs. The drug causes their brain to not
rationalize their actions and emotions.

Because he is your brother, it is easy to fall in to the net of guilt. Most family
members tend to blame themselves for what happened to their loved one, and
try to accept responsibilities for drug addiction on his behalf. If you allow guilt to
corrupt your mind, it will be devastating to you, and not beneficial to your
brother. He is the only one who made the decision to use drugs, and he is the one
who has to agree to stop it.

The most crucial step is to find the way to get your brother in to a treatment. If
your brother is resistant to get help, you might want to consider an intervention
that takes place at home, in the familiar place, and involves the whole family.
Choose the time when you brother is not under the influence of drugs, and is
coherent. It is important to let him know that you all love him, but you can not
bear to see him go through a self destructing path. Prior to staging an
intervention, you can research several rehab facilities that are specializing in
different drug addiction problems, as well as focusing on a specific age group,
such as adolescents, adults etc. The intervention specialist then, will lead the
family to your brother’s intervention, make assessment evaluation and help with
    transportation to the drug facility.

Every family member will be encouraged to speak in the non-accusation and non-
aggressive manner, letting your brother know how serious a drug addiction is, and
what are the consequences of his drug dependence.

If this method of intervention is failed, and your brother refuses to accept that he
has a problem, and not willing to undergo a rehab treatment, there are two things
    you can do:

• you can let him know that you love him, and you are going to be there for
him when he is ready to get help. However, you need to call his attention to the
fact that , you cannot support him financially, or allow him to live in your home,
or he cannot visit your home while under the influence.
• you can have your brother arrested, even if he did not commit any crime,
as he is entitled to be confined to a mental hospital for evaluation. This is not, by
far, an easiest step to take. However, if you brother’s addiction gets out of
control, this action might be necessary.
