Introduction to Periodontal Disease• Periodontal disease a type of gum disease and is caused by a buildup of plaque on teeth, which hardens to form tartar.• This can cause gum disease ranging from gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, to more serious periodontal disease, such as an infection of the bone and soft tissue around the teeth which may lead to tooth loss.

Residual Problems from Periodontal Disease• Other health problems can stem from periodontal disease, especially in pregnant women.• Expectant mothers with periodontal disease are more likely to have premature babies or babies with a low birth weight.• The risk for women with periodontal disease of having a premature or low birth weight baby is three to seven times higher than that of women with healthy gums.

Need for Periodontal Disease Research• More research needs to be undertaken to explain why this link exists and to explore the implications for expectant mothers and their unborn children.• The risk of periodontal disease can be reduced by twice daily brushing and flossing as well as regular dental checkups.
