  2. 2. Background <ul><li>The two book of ‘Kings’ was probably written just before the exile and then revised </li></ul><ul><li>It is a selective view of history; </li></ul><ul><li>complemented by the two books of </li></ul><ul><li>Chronicles </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>It is a ‘prophetic history’ </li></ul><ul><li>Each king is evaluated by a simple phrase; either: </li></ul>He did evil in the eyes of the Lord He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord or
  4. 4. Josiah <ul><li>What do we know about him? </li></ul><ul><li>He reigned for 31 years (639-609 BC) </li></ul><ul><li>He was 8 when made king (639 BC) </li></ul><ul><li>Son of Amon </li></ul><ul><li>Grandson of Manasseh </li></ul><ul><li>Great grandson of Hezekiah </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>During his reign ‘Th e book’ was discovered </li></ul><ul><li>He walked in the ways of his father David </li></ul><ul><li>He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Josiah takes action! </li></ul><ul><li>He calls all the elders together </li></ul><ul><li>Josiah reads the book </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>He destroys the pagan altars </li></ul><ul><li>Issue was idolatry it has to be dealt with </li></ul>

  11. 11. What does it mean for us?
  12. 12. <ul><li>Bob Dylan was right when he sang: </li></ul><ul><li>But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed </li></ul><ul><li>You're gonna have to serve somebody, </li></ul><ul><li>Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord </li></ul><ul><li>But you're gonna have to serve somebody. </li></ul>
  13. 13. <ul><li>Anything can become an idol </li></ul><ul><li>Idolatry is simply misplaced allegiance </li></ul><ul><li>We are all worshippers </li></ul>
  14. 14. <ul><li>Idolatry is worshipping the created rather than the creator </li></ul><ul><li>Idolatry is misplaced allegiance </li></ul><ul><li>Idolatry is a consequence of being a worshipper </li></ul>
  15. 15. What about Josiah ’s reforms? <ul><li>They didn’t go far enough! We’re told: </li></ul><ul><li>Jehoahaz : in a 3 month reign did evil </li></ul><ul><li>Jehoiakim: in an 11 year reign did evil </li></ul><ul><li>Jehoiachin: 3 month reign he also did evil </li></ul><ul><li>Zedekiah: for 11 years he too did evil in the eyes of the Lord. </li></ul>The result: exile!
  16. 16. What about us? <ul><li>Will we deal with our own idolatries? </li></ul><ul><li>Will we remember our God who demands total allegiance? </li></ul>
