  2. 2. What are we fighting?  Cant fight a battle without knowing the goal.  What’s going on in the body?  What tools do we have?  Do we have a plan or strategy?  Support people are You!
  3. 3. Goals  Goal #1: Lead a normal healthy life  Goal #2: have fun!  Medical Goals: Vary depending on provider, and age of the child.  (Nelda and Kim will go into greater detail)
  4. 4. Inside the body…  Imagine a water tower. People are constantly using water, and its constantly filling itself up. Now… try keeping it between 25% and 50% full all the time.  Sugar is constantly being ingested, made, stored, moved around , and burned.  What does insulin do? (time to draw)
  5. 5. Tools (there are more than you think!)  Food (hardest tool to master)  Insulin (takes training, but easy)  Exercise (trial and error)  Diabetes “Stuff” (meters, needles, CGM, Pumps)  #1 tool: YOUR BRAIN!
  6. 6. Pause a moment and discuss “Stuff”  Tiger woods  BMW / Mercedes  Rolex  Cost does not equal quality or better outcomes!  Tools are just tools, they have no skill!
  7. 7. Planning / Strategy  This is a TEAM disease!  The entire family needs to take ownership, this includes teachers  Physicians outline a strategy and give recommendations, but they DO NOT control this disease. The Team does.  Medical management plan for home and school.
  8. 8. Support People  You! (give the parents a night off!)  Diabetes Team / Physician  School Nurse  Any others you can think of?  Beware of advise of family and friends with Diabetes.
