  3. 3. What the results say…<br />The 3rdgrade scores on the Stanford 10 standardized test have been steadily decreasing from 2008 to the present<br />Similar to other schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the school’s enrollment has also decreased. <br />
  4. 4. School Year 2010-2011 Focus for Elementary Grade Teachers<br />Academic Excellence in the Elementary School Reading Program<br />Review the current Reading Program<br />Raise the Reading Scores<br />

Reading Comprehension Strategies <br />Teach students different types of questions<br />Show students text clues in inferential questions<br />Activate prior knowledge before reading<br />Instuct students to ask questions before, during, and after reading<br />Compare and contrast texts by the same author<br />
  6. 6. Word Identification Strategies<br />Reinforce sight vocabulary during read alouds<br />Teach words difficult to decode in context<br />Instruct students to reread difficult words<br />Teach students to identify word chunks<br />Teach students to identify beginning and ending sounds<br />Teach students to blend sounds<br />Instruct students to use pictures to identify unknown words<br />
  7. 7. Phonics Instruction <br />Pre-Kindergarten through first grade teach phonics as a separate discipline<br />Follow phonics lesson plans in their entirety<br />2nd through 4th grade teach phonics as integrated with reading instruction using the chosen reading textbook series and novels<br />
  8. 8. Evaluating Student Reading Levels<br />Student reading levels will be assessed three times per year using the IRI<br />Initially in the first month of school<br />After the mid year point<br />End of the school year<br />

IRI Assessment Guidelines for Teachers<br />Testing must occur in a quiet place, free of distractions<br />Use different versions of the test for each administration<br />Follow instructions in IRI administration book<br />Be familiar with the coding rules used with the IRI<br />Students may not look back in the test <br />Students may not be assisted in any way on the test<br />

Conclusions<br />Teachers in the Elementary School need to work together and communicate regularly to ensure continuity in the reading program across the grade levels.<br />By focusing on the reading program and enhancing reading instruction, the school should see improvement in the standardized test scores.<br />
