Fibromyalgia is diagnosed based on the following criteria: 1)Pain in each of the four quadrants of the body for at least 3 months. 2)At least 11 of 18 tender points for at least 3 months. “Fibromyalgia diagnosis remains difficult because there are currently no diagnostic laboratory tests for fibromyalgia .
  7. 7. What Causes Fibromyalgia? The cause of fibromyalgia is not known. Those affected experience pain in response to stimuli that are normally not perceived as painful. Researchers have found elevated levels of a nerve chemical signal, called substance P. Nerve cells communicate with one another through neurotransmitters. The onset of fibromyalgia has been associated with psychological distress, trauma, and infection Substance P is one such neurotransmitter. It is a protein found in the brain and spinal cord, and is associated with some inflammatory processes in the joints. Its function is to cause pain. Substance P has been implicated in pain syndromes such as: low back pain fibromyalgia Arthritis
