COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
Forming Mechanism for Strip Material We, LANDO PRODUCTS INC., a
Corporation of the State of California, United States of America, of
P.O. Box 455, Sausalito, California, United States of America, do
hereby dedare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be
granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be
particularly described in and by the following statement: -
This invention relates to a forming mechanism for strip material such
as aluminium strips from which venetian blind slats may be made.
According to the present invention there is provided a forming
mechanism for strip material including a plurality of pairs of freely
rotatable forming rolls between which strip material to be treated is
arranged to pass, or at least one roll of each pair being spring
loaded, each pair of rolls comprising a male roll and a female roll
which is of the same axial length as that of the male roll, wherein
one pair of forming rolls is adapted to form the side edges of the
strip and a second pair of forming rolls is adapted to form that
portion of the strip which is intermediate of said side edges.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily
carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of
example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the forming mechanism, Figure 2 is a
front view of the first pair of forming rolls, Figure 3 is a front
2. view of one pair of preform rolls, and Figure 4 is a front view of the
second pair of forming rolls.
The forming head shown is two-stage.
The first stage is made up of a female roll 11 and a male roll 12 of
such shape that form is imparted to only the edge sections of the
strip. The second stage is made up of a female roll 13 and a male roll
14 of [Price 3s.T6d,4l, 'u3 C such shape that form is imparted only to
the remaining centre section of the strip. Multistage forming is
required to prevent permanent edge stretching of the strip that occurs
50 with single stage forming. When the section being formed approaches
a plane perpendicular to the axis of the forming rolls as when single
stage forming, permanent edge stretching occurs because the elastic
limit of 55 the strip material is surpassed in the edge areas which
have a greater distance to travel than the centre portion of the
strip. Male rolls 12 and 14 are free rotating and are mounted on
spring loaded pivot bars 15. The 60 bars 15 are pivot mounted against
the mounting plate 16 and are free to pivot around pins 17. Rolls 11
and 13 are also free to rotate and are mounted on vertically
adjustable bars 18. Adjustable tension coil 65 springs 19 keep rolls
12 and 14 in a fully engaged position with respect to rolls 11 and 13
so that the double thickness of the splice of the ends of two
successive strips will travel through the rolls without injury to 70
rolls.
A handle 20 linked by bars 21 to pivot bars 15 provide a means for
disengaging male and female rolls 11, 12, 13 and 14. Preform rolls 22
and 23 are permanently affixed 75 with relation to one another but
mounted on vertically adjustable mounting bars 24. Adjusting handles
25 provide means for adjusting preform rolls 22 and 23 and adjusting
handles 26 provide means for adjusting the 80 vertical position of the
first stage rolls 11 and 12 and the vertical position of the second
stage rolls 13 and 14. In this manner complete control is derived to
provide for vertical straightness or lack of bow. All rolls 85 11, 12,
13, 14, 22 and 23 are driven by their engagement with the advancing
strip.
