32 bit and 64 bit processors

  1. 1. 32 Bit and 64 bit processors: Explained
  2. 2. BASICS: 32-bit v/s 64-bit • 32 and 64 are the no of bits processor can address. As the number of bits increases so are major benefits , as more bits means that data can be processed in larger chunks which also means more accurately plus, our system can point to a larger number of locations in physical memory
  3. 3. • Most computers made in the 1990’s and early 2000s were 32-bit machines, they were popular in beginning as they could address to 4 gigabytes of memory in one go. But as modern applications are growing and thus, demanding more than 4GB of memory to complete tasks so 64 bit systems are now becoming more popular as they can potentially address up to 4 billion times that many locations.
  4. 4. • The larger number of registers, and increase of their size, allow processor to handle large memory areas simultaneously, to handle variables and arrays more effectively, and to pass function arguments in registers instead of the stack.
  5. 5. The advantages that 64 bit processors have over 32 bit • Extended address space • Capacity increase • And, larger number of general purpose registers.
  6. 6. COMPARISON 32- bit processors 64-bit processors Addressable space of 4 gb Addressable space of 16 gb 64 bit applications/programs won’t work Most 32 bit applications/programs will work Not recommended for multi-tasking and stress testing Ideal for multi-tasking and stress- testing Requires 32-bit operating system Both 32 and 64-bit operating system will work
  7. 7. Which Version My PC Has? • For Windows To figure out which version is your pc running, just open system properties in control panel or right click on my computer icon and choose properties from menu.
