  3. 3. Nothing is off limits <ul><li>The internet is a public network that can be accessed from nearly anywhere </li></ul><ul><li>Once it is on the net, it is there forever </li></ul><ul><li>Your past can and will come back to haunt you </li></ul>
  4. 4. 9 mistakes of social media <ul><li>Posting off-color remarks </li></ul><ul><li>Posting intimate details </li></ul><ul><li>Posting your religious preferences </li></ul><ul><li>Badmouthing your clients </li></ul><ul><li>Complaining about your employer </li></ul><ul><li>Inappropriate photos </li></ul><ul><li>Creating videos of your co-workers </li></ul><ul><li>Talking crap about your boss </li></ul><ul><li>Play hooky -- and then post about it </li></ul>

Facebook firings <ul><li>1) Who: New England Patriots cheerleader Caitlin Davis </li></ul><ul><li>What: cut from the squad </li></ul><ul><li>When: Nov. 4, 2008 </li></ul><ul><li>Why: Pictures she posted on her Facebook of her with a passed-out man who was covered in graffiti, including swastikas, anti-Semitic remarks and profanity. </li></ul><ul><li>2) Who: Dan Leone, stadium operations employee for the Eagles </li></ul><ul><li>What: was fired </li></ul><ul><li>When: March 9, 2009 </li></ul><ul><li>Why: Putting the following on Facebook: &quot;Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver ... Dam Eagles R Retarted!!&quot; [sic]. </li></ul>

Who : South Carolina firefighter and paramedic Jason Brown </li></ul><ul><li>What : was fired for </li></ul><ul><li>When : Feb. 11, 2010 </li></ul><ul><li>Why : Creating a video, which showed a cartoon doctor and paramedic responding to an emergency in a hospital, and posting it to Facebook </li></ul><ul><li>4. Who: Gloria Gadsden, professor at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania </li></ul><ul><li>What: was fired </li></ul><ul><li>When: March 3, 2010 </li></ul><ul><li>Why: For posting: &quot;Does anyone know where I can find a very discrete hitman? Yes, it's been that kind of day.&quot; [sic] </li></ul><ul><li>(Happened right after the Feb. 12 shootings at the University of Alabama, in which professor Amy Bishop was charged with killing three fellow professors) </li></ul>

  10. 10. E-mail Guidelines <ul><li>1. What you say and send in an e-mail can be used against you. Fourteen percent of workplace e-mail is subpoenaed in lawsuits (Enron) </li></ul><ul><li>2. Don't send sexually explicit e-mails. </li></ul><ul><li>3. Remember that there's no such thing as a confidential e-mail. </li></ul><ul><li>4. Use e-mail for work-related issues </li></ul><ul><li>5. Harassment and discrimination have no place in the workplace -- or cyberspace. </li></ul>
  11. 11. More… <ul><li>6. Assume all chain letters are a hoax. Just delete them. </li></ul><ul><li>7. Use the 'reply all' feature sparingly. </li></ul><ul><li>8. Do not forward any e-mail unless you have to </li></ul><ul><li>9. BCC isn't always blind. This combines the worst of the two previous warnings. When a recipient selects 'reply to everyone,' those listed in the BCC field will now show up in the new sender's 'to' field. If you don't want your BCC recipients revealed to others, send them a separate e-mail. </li></ul><ul><li>10. Read your company's e-mail policy. </li></ul>

Twitter <ul><li>140-character burst where Twitter users share their thoughts, as well as links and photos </li></ul><ul><li>According to the 2010 Vault Social Media Survey   2010 Vault Social Media Survey, 65% of companies use Twitter to promote their organization's brand, 46% advertise job opportunities on it, and 34% communicate with potential candidates via the site. </li></ul>

Final thoughts… <ul><li>Do update your profile regularly </li></ul><ul><li>Don't badmouth your current or previous employer </li></ul><ul><li>Do join groups...selectively </li></ul><ul><li>Don't mention your job search if you're still employed </li></ul><ul><li>Do get rid of your digital dirt </li></ul><ul><li>Don't forget others can see your friends. </li></ul>
