Strange and spectacular places around the world

  1. 1. Mystery Sport is a tourist attraction near Santa Cruz, California, famous because of its disrespect to the laws of physics and gravity. The odd cabin, although seems like lying on flat ground, makesthose who enter inside swinging all the time. The most probable theory that tries to explain this says that it’s allabout “tilt-induced visual illusion”. The illusion experienced byvisitors results from the oddly tilted environment as well as standingon a tilted floor.Inside the tilted room of the Mystery Spot misperceptions of theheight and orientation of objects occur. Even when people arestanding outside on a level ground, the slant of the building in thebackground causes misperceptions as we judge the height ofpeople using the slant of the roof rather than the true horizon.
  2. 2. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devils Triangle, is aregion in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean .So many ships and planes have disappeared and so manydisasters have happened in the area between Bermuda,Puerto Rico and Miami, and many theories have appearedas well. From compass variations, gulf streams, rogue waves tohuman errors and conspiracy theories – anything is possible, but none of them is proved yet. However, it’s still one of themost traveled routes in the world.
  3. 3. Socotra is archipelago the Horn of Africa and ArabicPeninsula, but the main island of Socotra is 95% of the wholelandmass, while the rest is just small islands. This place is probably the most alien-looking on Earth. Onethird of the flora and fauna on this island, administered byYemen government, can be found only hereThe umbrella-shaped “blood tree,” the cucumber tree, giantsucculent tree, different kinds of birds, spiders, bats and catshave the only habitat on Socotra.
  4. 4. Mount Roraima is located on the triple border point betweenBrazil, Guyana and Venezuela. It is weird because of its shape, but is also mysteriousbecause of the clouds that are always near the peak and theendemic fauna. The tabletop of the mountain, which is the peak actually, isconsidered as one of the world’s oldest geological formations. Itis believed that the plateau was formed by water and winds, butthe reason why some species can’t be found anywhere elseremain mystery.
  5. 5. Rio Tinto is located in south-western Spainand originates fromSierra Morena mountains of AndalusiaThe area around the river has been mined since ancient times,so a lot of minerals can be found into the water, especiallyiron, which makes the water red. Even some bacteria enjoy itslife there, “exploiting” the iron. However, the weirdness of this river comes from its highacidity, which made some scientists say that it is very similar tothe underground waters of Mars.
  6. 6. The Fly Geyser, near Gerlach, Nevada, is strange becauseit somehow grows up. It is three meters high at the moment. It is interesting that this geyser is located on private area, sonobody can enjoy it from close. The owner is Bill Spoo, a man who rejects the opportunity tomake a fortune from the tourists, and keeps the beautifulview just for himself and the few researchers andphotographers who have to schedule a visit weeks beforearriving.
  7. 7. McMurdo Dry Valleys are located on Antarctica but, believe it ornot, they lack snow. That makes the area to be a desert, of coursethe coldest one in the world. However, that’s not the only strange things here. The valleys are“bleeding” from the many geysers, because of the highconcentration of iron, making picture of world different than Earth
  8. 8. The well known statues on the Easter Island, the rapa nui, still remain mystery for the researchers. The statues are over 50 feet tall, but no one has a clue whobuilt them, why they built them, how they were broughtthere, and so on.One of the theories is that a civilization has lived here longtime ago, but the people ate everything on the island andeither moved somewhere else or were exterminated.
  9. 9. Lake Vostok is the most recent mystery coming fromAntarctica, and the whole world probably, as there ispossibility for some revolutionary revelations.Scientists believe that in the lake under the ice surfacethere are some species that have survived 15 billionsyears. However, these species would be something that the worldhas never seen before, as they would have developedunder complete darkness.
  10. 10. Racetrack Playa in California is well known due to its sailingstones. No one knows how, but the stones there somehow manageto move from their original position, leaving a track behindthem. The reasons are still unknown and are subject of research. Itis supposed that the winds in the valley are “responsible” forthis.
  11. 11. Caño Cristales is river located in Serrania de la Macarena,Colombia. Its colorful appearance make this river world famous, making the people to recognize it as “the most beautifulriver in the world”, “the river of five colors”, and as “theriver that runs away to paradise.”The algae and mosses on the bottom of river make it sobeautiful. During the wet season Caño Cristales flows fastand deep denying them the sun they need.
  12. 12. Enclosed by 752square kms of incredibly scenery, the BemarahaNational Park, situated in the west of Madagascar, was classified asa UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, and is home to the trulyamazing stone forest known as the Tsingy. It is an extraordinary world of forest canyons, humid caves andunique fauna and flora thriving in close proximity to one another. The formation of these unusual rocks actually began some 200million years ago when layers of calcite accumulated at the bottomof a Jurassic lagoon, forming a thick limestone bed. Later tectonicactivity elevated the limestone, and as sea level fell during thePleistocene ice ages, even more of the limestone wasexposed. Eventually, the ancient sediments were carved bymonsoon rains, finally creating what we see today.
  13. 13. Weird but breathtaking! Pamukkale means “castle ofcotton,” and the place is cottony indeed. The white terraces are created with help of theearthquakes, common for this area, which allowed ahot water full of calcium to reach the surface.A huge amount of layers of chalky material slowly hadbuilt up the terraces over the last two millenniums. There’s a little town near this wonder of nature, calledHeirapolis, which means “Sacred City.”
  14. 14. When the first ancestors of New Zealand on theisland with their great Araiteuru canoe it sunk andthe whole crew turned into stones. However, this is just a legend. These stones, betterknown as Moeraki Boulders, were formed on thesea floor from sedimentary deposits that fusedaround a core just like the pearls form around aparticle of sand. They’re located on Koekohe Beach, on NewZealand’s southern island.
  15. 15. “The Gate to Hell” is located in Turkeminstan, in theheart of Middle Asia, in the Kara-Kum desert. It was formed with little human help, when in 1971Soviet experts ordered drilling in the cavern filled withloads of natural gas, which roof collapsed leaving ahole with 60-70 meters diameter. After that the gascontinued rising from even deeper sources. Aware ofthe possibility of poisoning, the government decided toburn it.It never stopped burning since than and today it offersa spectacular view, especially at night. People can’tstay there more than five minutes because of the gases.
