BACKGROUND • Cambodia is an overwhelmingly agrarian society with 85% of the poor living in rural areas. • 85% of the population dependent on small-scale agriculture. • The main agricultural products comprise of paddy rice, livestock, fish, forest, rubber and other crops. • Rice cultivation is known as traditional, income-generating work practiced by rural people. • It is also to provide food for their family, and it has recently been prioritized as a strategic crop to boost exports and generate more income for farmers

BACKGROUND CONT. • Rice is considered a staple crop for Cambodia and should be taken into prudent accounts to raise annual yields, while reducing workload. • 60 % of rural people depend upon rice indicates that this crop is one of the largest job provider. • Rice is also deemed very laborious and takes a long time to yield • Rice growth and yields are highly sensitive to variability of land preparation, climatic conditions, proper care, and water supplies.

INTRODUCTION TO MANUAL RICE TRANSLPANTER • Since rice cultivation requires a great deal of available labor, lack of man-power is associated with late farming or less care, which signifies pressing need for the aid of machine to boost crop production. • Manual rice transplanters have been widely marketed and utilized in the Asian regions to compensate for labor shortages and facilitate farming work
  5. 5. PROBLEMS OF THE TRANPLANTER RECEIVED FROM OXFAM • Oxfam bought the transplenters from China • Not functioning on the field • Work hard on finding the solution to Famers.

  7. 7. OUR OBJECTIVE 1. To assess the performance of the Chinese two-row rice transplanters for RUA soil conditions and at farmer’s field conditions (farmers supported by OXFAM) and to analyze the break-even point of the rice transplanters 2. To identify post-test technical and functional problems necessary for improvements 3. To refine the 8 rice transplanters from the adjusted rice transplanters

NEXT STEPS • Firstly, the machine trial will be conducted on the RUA campus, where the soil is sandy, involving a group of 6 students responsible for different tasks. • If the testing of the machine shows a good, reliable results, then the rice transplanters will be tested on the farmer’s field with involvement of farmer to understand their realistic performance, its benefits compared to manual transplanting • To develop manuals in Khmer and English on how to operate and adjust the rice transplanters
