  2. 2. WHAT IS LANGUAGE? <ul><li>The speech that we use to communicate our views and ideas from one person to other is called language . </li></ul>

STAGES OF LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT <ul><li>The language development of a child begins right from the birth cry. </li></ul><ul><li>It is further developed by the family at home and later by the teacher at school. </li></ul><ul><li>It is essential that the child should learn to express effectively and efficiently. </li></ul>

ROLE OF TEACHER <ul><li>The teacher plays a very important role in this process, as she is the person responsible for laying the foundation of various other languages. </li></ul><ul><li>To teach a new language the teacher must make use of the mother tongue.   </li></ul><ul><li>The teacher should adopt methods that go on from known to unknown, easy to hard and general to specific and so on. </li></ul><ul><li>This helps the child to learn the basic concepts in an easy way. </li></ul>

HEREDITY & ENVIRONMENT <ul><li>Heredity and environment are the factors that cause individual differences in language. </li></ul><ul><li>The hereditary factors of an individual come from his genes. </li></ul><ul><li>The environmental factors encompass the physical surroundings, traditions, code of ethics, contact with other people etc. </li></ul>

FACTORS INFLUENCING LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT <ul><li>The parents, teachers, community and society also play a very important role in the language development of an individual. </li></ul><ul><li>Age, gender, intelligence, achievement and socio-economic factors lead to individual differences. </li></ul>
