Overfishing Assessment Example Level 5

 1. 1. Overfishing In The North Sea By LJ - 8B (FEHS 2005-06)
 2. 2. Where Is The North Sea Located?
 3. 3. What Is Overfishing?

Over fishing is where the fisherman catch and land to many fish. If over fishing keeps on occurring in the everyday fishing industry, then there will soon be no fish left at all, the fishing industry will close, the sea will deteriorate as well as all of the predators that eat the fish and the consumers will not be happy.

 4. 4. What Is The Present Situation?

There are currently 10,000,000 tonnes of fish stock in the north sea, but every year ¼ is caught ( 2,500,000 tonnes ) and another ¼ dies due to pollution or natural death ( 2,500,000 tonnes ) so every year ½ of the fish stock is going!

 5. 5. Who Is Involved with Overfishing?

Fishermen – the ones who cause it by catching too many fish, and the fishermen will also be effected, due to possible loss of job.

Wholesalers – they buy the fish and make it into food, so if overfishing keeps occurring then they will have no business anymore.

Consumers – they buy the food and eat it! So if overfishing keeps occurring, then it will make some people ill, because it’s part of their diet.

 6. 6. How can the situation be managed?

Quotas - enforced by the fishing inspectors

Square nets – instead of diamond nets, to allow small fish through the gaps

First decision is the fishing inspectors

Second decision is the countries government

Final decision is the (EU’s) European union’s

 7. 7. Is overfishing sustainable?

No, overfishing is not sustainable because every year half of the fish stock from the north sea goes or dies, and if this happened every year, there will soon not be many fish left in the north sea.

“ I think that there will soon be a lot of problems in this world, and most of them caused by overfishing, because if there are no fish, then the sea will soon decompose and that will cause floods, which will lead to many more problems.” Collin Stage – ‘Frying Machine© Chip Shop’ Owner.

 8. 8. What will happen with no fish?

Fisherman will become poor due to loss of job sue to lack of fish from the sea

Ice Factory Workers will become poor due to loss of job due to lack of fish from the fisherman

Fish Food Factory Workers will become poor due to lack of fish from the ice factory

Supermarker/Fish ‘nd Chip Shop workers will become poor due to lack of fish due to lack of products

Civilians will become unhealthy due to lack of fish in their diet and become unhappy due to no products in the shops.

 9. 9. Conclusion

I believe mankind will overcome overfishing, but we have been given enough chances for us to realise that we will have to start being more careful with our world!
