21. 21. Its almost 8am and my brother and I are rushing to the farm. Today we traded in sleep for a day of organic farming.
Johnson’s backyard garden is a certified organic vegetable farm located five miles east of Austin, Tx. Year round, Johnson’s Backyard garden grows over 60 different types of vegetables, flowers, and herbs.
They allow volunteers on the farm for half a day , 8 am to 1pm, in exchange for a box of veggies.
Our day began when Brent handed every volunteer a knife.
The first task was to weed the lettuce plants.
The lettuce plants attract various bugs, including ladybugs.
After finishing weeding 2 rows of lettuce, we were on our way to work with the sweet potatoes.
Our job was to line up the sweet potatoes into two rows. The goal was to get them as close as possible, but without touching, so the roots wouldn’t get tangeled. It was kind of like putting together a puzzle.
Sweet potatoes come in many interesting shapes and sizes.

Little did we know, we would get more out of this morning than a box of hard work.
