How to add and subtract fractions

2. 2/6 + 3/8 First you have to find a common Denominator for 2/6 & 3/8. In this case the common denominator is 24. So you would multiply 6 by 4 and whatever you multiply the denominator by you must multiply the numerator by so we now have 8/24. So we multiply 8 by 3 and multiply 3 by 3, 9/24. Now we have a common denominator.

3. 8/24 + 9/24 8/24 + 9/24= 17/24 Since we cannot reduce the answer is 17/24

4. 7/16 – 3/8 Just like in adding, you find the common denominator in order to solve the problem. In this case 32 is the common denominator. So multiply 16 and 7 by 2 and multiply 8 and three by 4.

5. 14/32 – 12/32 Now you subtract 14/32 and 12/32. The answer is going to be 2/32. You now have to divide 2/32 into lowest terms, so divide 2/32 by 2. The fraction should now be 1/16 and it is in lowest terms and this is the answer
