Cricket<br />The actual origins of Cricket have<br /> been lost in time, but dates back<br /> to the 14th Century.<br />It seems clear that the English game originated in the sheep-rearing country of the South East, where the short grass of the downland pastures made it possible to bowl a ball of wool or rags at a target. That target was usually the wicket-gate of the sheep pasture, which was defended with a bat in the form of a shepherd's crooked staff. <br />
  3. 3. Rugby<br />The first game of Rugby was recorded in 1175. <br />However, the first games of Rugby as we see today originated at Rugby School in Middlesex.<br /> Rugby continues to be a very <br /> popular sport in the UK.<br />

Football<br />The first game of football recorded was in 1170 and has become the most popular sport in the UK.<br />English football teams are known and supported all over the world.<br />The most famous English Football Teams are Manchester United, with an estimated 330 million fans and Liverpool Football Club with an estimated 42 million fans.<br />
  5. 5. Tennis<br />The modern game of tennis originated in the UK in the late 18th Century. <br />Each year in June, Wimbledon hosts it’s famous tournament. <br />
  6. 6. Darts<br />Darts started out in Drinking Establishments in Medieval England, with the bottom of wine barrels being used as a board with shortened arrows.<br />Darts was the favoured game of Henry VIII.<br />
  7. 7. Famous Sporting Heroes<br />Many sportsmen and women have been an inspiration to many English Children. These include: David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Kelly Holmes, Steve Redgrave, Andrew Flintoff and Andy Murray.<br />

  9. 9. Sports<br />All the children at Barton Primary have at least 2 hours of PE each week. This includes learning skills to play Football, Netball, Cricket, Gymnastics, Hockey, Athletics, Rounders, Rugby, Dance, Badminton and Golf.<br />In addition to this we have our Daily Wake and Shake sessions.<br />
  10. 10. More Sports<br />We also have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extra curricular activities. Some of these run alongside our curriculum and others are as after school clubs.<br />We also have many sporting teams. There are many matches that we play.<br />
  11. 11. Barton’s Sporting Achievements<br />We have competed in many competitions and have won many trophies.<br />One of our favourite competitions is Football.<br />

  13. 13. Barton’s Sporting Achievements<br />We have also done very well in Athletics and represented our local area.<br />
  14. 14. We have also taken part in Netball Tournaments and Balloon Volley Ball.<br />
  15. 15. Links with Torquay United<br />We are very lucky to have a local football team who help us to become better football players.<br />They also encourage us to adapt healthier lifestyles.<br />
