9. 9.
20. 20.
 21. 21. Fragments of Expat’ations
22. 22. Welcoming & Accessible
23. 23.
 24. 24. Our arrival in Eindhoven was strange. It was Sunday, and everything was silent. Streets were empty and shops and restaurants closed.
25. 25. Because I’m originally from Algiers I did not have a visa yet. No sofi-number. I had money but no bank account. And no permit to stay in the Netherlands. It would take up to six month plus six more to get things arranged.
26. 26. City life suffers from it’s opening hours; 10.00 to 18.00, that’s not the ‘living in the city’-feeling for me.
27. 27.
 28. 28. The kitchen is open until 19.30 hrs.
29. 29. Everybody speaks English, but not everything is in English.
30. 30. Warm & Cooperative
31. 31.
 32. 32. The housing experience was awful. We don’t know if we get the deposit back. It is a totally unfair business.
.
33. 33. Nobody tells you how it works. They don’t think along with me, like selling me a day ticket in the bus, instead they let me pay 3 Euro’s, for a 5 minute bus drive.
34. 34. We lack coincidental meetings, to meet new people. Meeting people and making friends whether they are Dutch or English or French is really important to us.
35. 35. Creative & Unique
36. 36.
 37. 37. Eindhoven is a very exciting place, where a lot is happening. But is not something you notice at the surface. You really have to look under it.
38. 38. The blob is the first sign of contemporary architecture. For us the Evoluon is just old modern architecture. Even the architecture of the high tech campus and TU/e is yesterdays and not tomorrow’s architecture.
39. 39. At organized events you can experience the creativity.
In Autumn there is an overkill of culture events
40. 40. Innovative & Progressive
41. 41. Video
42. 42. We very much like the scientific atmosphere, and we love to recognize it in the city.
43. 43. Everybody is surrounded by technology in their homes. In the city it becomes likewise when we start using the city-pass to do things; park your bike; dump your garbage under the ground. That is high-tech.
44. 44. kiestvoor het Techhouse.
(Nine out of ten chose the high-tech house)
I love the combination: high-tech with design … and green … the soft side of technology
45. 45. Conclusion
46. 46. expats activity
48. 48. Green
49. 49. Video
50. 50. Yes, the parks, like city park opposite van Abbe, Genneper parken and Philips parks we go, and we love the ‘kinderboerderij’ in Veldhoven. But we’re not going to the forest. That is what the Dutch like.
51. 51. I´m a city girl. I never go to the Eindhoven Countryside. Sure I like the parks, but that is enough.
52. 52. The true treasure is the meditative spaces around Eindhoven; the paddocks and heather fields. Those are great places for deep thinking
53. 53. We live in a very nice peaceful place; calm, green, convenient for everyday life with a small child. But now our son is growing up and the earlier positive aspects become boring.
54. 54. Partners
55. 55. Video
56. 56. I was looking for a new job and was willing to move but she left a good job because of me. If she doesn’t find a decent job in two years, we will decide to go back home.
57. 57. Brainport
58. 58. Video
59. 59. Brainport is like city branding. It’s very vaguely appearing in the city. Personally I feel extremely outside Brainport, while I should play a role in it.
60. 60. Brainport? I don’t know what that is…
What does Brainport do? Import brainy people?
61. 61. Future
62. 62. Opening expat center Eindhoven
63. 63. Spanish cultural center
64. 64. Philips prepared women for their stay in Eindhoven
65. 65. Philips technology at the train station
66. 66. Robert Reich and the ‘Symbolic Analysts’
Eindhoven expats are what you can call ‘symbolic analysts’: hard working, focussed… trigger them!
67. 67. Embrace internationalization:specialized shops
68. 68. Bigger challenge: Visible cooperation
69. 69. Qualities dependent on the left hemisphere of the brain (logic, knowledge) now need to be complemented by those associated with right-brained processes (intuition and creative thinking).
Daniel Pink, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future
70. 70. Open up, enrich, expose and incubate
71. 71.
 72. 72.
 73. 73.
 74. 74. To be continued…
