3G

 1. 1. By Sophie Merritt
2. 2. What is 3G?

3rd Generation Mobile Telecommunications, or International Mobile Telecommunication-2000 (IMT-2000) is a collection of standards for wireless, mobile communication
 3. 3. The 3G services need to satisfy and fulfil the specifications which are set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

How is 3G better?

3G is an upgrade of previous 2G and 2.5G standards
 4. 4. Compared to 2G technology, 3G has enhancements such as higher data speed, allowing simultaneous speech and data services, providing mobile broadband access to smart phones and laptops, better audio and video streaming, browsing at higher speeds, TV via the internet and much more

Features

Security: compared to 2G predecessors, 3G networks offer really high quality security. They use KASUMI block crypto, which provides end-to-end security when accessing applications
 5. 5. Data: the transfer rate for 3G networks is a lot higher than the previous 2G, running between 128 and 144 kbit/s. The rate can go beyond 2 mbit/s for fixed wireless LANs

How to use 3G

To use 3G you will need a device that is 3G compatible
 6. 6. The device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card, meaning it is connected to the Internet all over the provider’s range, which differs to Wi-Fi which has a limited range

Applications

Some examples of applications that 3G networks offer are:
 7. 7. Mobile internet
 8. 8. Mobile TV
 9. 9. Video calls
 10. 10. Video on demand
 11. 11. Wide-area wireless telephone
 12. 12. Location-based services

Private, Public & Corporate Use

Private: the private use of 3G consists on mobile devices such as smart phones and other technologies (i.e. iPads) – it allows individuals to access the Internet privately
 13. 13. Public: 3G can also be used publically – it provides fast Internet access to anyone who can afford it
 14. 14. Corporate: an example of corporate use of 3G is the designing and creating of new applications available on, for instance, iPads and iPhones

The future of 3G

Although it may seem that 3G is the beginning of a new revolution, we are in an era of technological boom; one piece of technology might just be starting out when another new one is introduced
 15. 15. Already the 4th generation (4G) is being talked about and is set to replace 3G in the not so distant future
