Web gatherings are good for the planet.Lynn and Terry Anderson of Athabasca University carried out a study of theenvironmental (and other) benefits of an online conference compared with theequivalent physical conference. Their report calculated the huge savings incarbon emissions gained from holding the conference online with participantsfrom all over the world. The study looked at Direct Learns 2005 SupportingDeaf People online conference and concluded:"Had the SDP conference taken place in London, England, instead of online, the percapita emissions would have been greater than the per capita emissions of Brazilfor all of 2005. In fact, the per capita emissions for this one conference, takingplace over three days, would have been greater than the per capita emissions of atleast 86 different countries for the entire year of 2005".Put simply this means that each delegate would have generated as muchcarbon attending a conference in London as one person in Brazil generates in ayear.
