  1. 1. Linux is assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution . It was made by Linus Trovalds. Linux was originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86 based personal computers. It is a leading operating system on servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers more thanLinus Trovalds 90% of todays 500 fastest supercomputers run some variant of Linux, including the 10 fastest.

The History of Linux began in 1991 withthe commencement of a personal projectby student, Linus Torvalds, to create a newoperating system kernel.Since then the resulting Linux kernel hasbeen marked by constant growth throughoutits history. Since the initial release ofits source code in 1991, it has grown from asmall number of C files under a licenseprohibiting commercial distribution to itsstate in 2012 of over 415 megabytes ofsource under the GNU General PublicLicense.
  3. 3. The Unix operating system wasconceived and implemented in 1969at AT&Ts Bell Laboratories inthe United States by KenThompson, Dennis Ritchie, DouglasMcIlroy, and Joe Ossanna. It was firstreleased in 1971 and was initiallyentirely written in assembly language,a common practice at the time. Later,in a key pioneering approach in 1973,UNIX was re-written in theprogramming language C by DennisRitchie (with exceptions to the kerneland I/O). The availability of anoperating system written in a high-level language allowedeasier portability to different computerplatforms.
  4. 4. The GNU Project, started in 1983 by Richard Stalman, had the goal of creating a "complete Unix- compatible software system" composed entirely of free software. Work began in 1984. Later, in 1985, Stallman started the Free Software Foundation and wrote the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) in 1989. By the early 1990s, many of the programs required in an operating system (such as libraries, compilers, text editors, a Unix shell, and a windowing system) were completed, although low-level elements such as device drivers, daemons, and the kernel were stalled andRichard incomplete. Linus Torvalds has said that if the GNU kernel had beenStalman available at the time (1991), he would not have decided to write his own.

Berkeley Software Distribution(BSD, sometimes calledBerkeley Unix) is a Unixoperating system derivativedeveloped and distributed by theComputer Systems ResearchGroup (CSRG) of the Universityof California, Berkeley, from1the 1980s, BSD was widelyadopted by vendors ofworkstation-class systems in theform of proprietary UNIXvariants such as DEC ULTRIXand Sun Microsystems SunOS1977 to 1995.
  6. 6. MINIX is an inexpensive minimal Unix- like operating system, designed for education in computer science, written by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. Starting with version 3 in 2005, MINIX has become free and redesigned for "serious" use. In 1991 while attending the University of Helsinki, Torvalds became curious about operating systems and frustrated by the licensing of MINIX, which limited it to educational use only. He began to work on his own operating system which eventually became the Linux kernel.Andrew S. Torvalds began the development of the LinuxTanenbaum kernel on MINIX, and applications written for MINIX were also used on Linux. Later Linux matured and further Linux development took place on Linux systems. GNU applications also replaced all MINIX components, because it was advantageous to use the freely available code from the GNU project with the fledgling operating system. (Code licensed under the GNU GPL can be reused in other projects as long as they also are released under the same or a compatible license.)

Users operate a Linux-based system through a command lineinterface (CLI), a graphical user interface (GUI), or throughcontrols attached to the associated hardware, which iscommon for embedded systems. For desktop systems, thedefault mode is usually a graphical user interface, by whichthe CLI is available through terminal emulator windows or ona separate virtual console. Most low-level Linux components,including the GNU userland, use the CLI exclusively. TheCLI is particularly suited for automation of repetitive ordelayed tasks, and provides very simple inter-processcommunication. A graphical terminal emulator program isoften used to access the CLI from a Linux desktop. A Linuxsystem typically implements a CLI by a shell, which is alsothe traditional way of interacting with a Unix system. A Linuxdistribution specialized for servers may use the CLI as itsonly interface.

Many popularapplications are available for awide variety of operating systems.For example MozillaFirefox, and Blender have downloadableversions for all major operatingsystems. Furthermore, someapplications were initiallydeveloped for Linux, suchas Pidgin, and GIMP. In the fieldof animation and visual effects,most high end software, suchas Autodesk Maya, Softimage XSIand Apple Shake, is available forLinux. Softwares like Skype arealso available in Linux.

Use of Linux distributions in home and enterprise desktops has been growing. Linux distributions have also become popular in the net book market, with many devices such as the ASUS Eee PC and Acer Aspire One shipping with customized Linux distributionsLinux being used on installed.   10. 10. GNOME Shell is the core user interface of the GNOME desktop environment starting with version 3, which was released on April 6, 2011. It provides basic functionality like switching between windows and launching applications. It replaces GNOME Panel and other software components from GNOME 2 to offer a user experience that breaks from the previous model of desktop metaphor, used in earlier versions of GNOME. GNOME Shell uses Mutter, a compositing window manager based on the Metacity window manager,GNOME Shell Desktop and the Clutter toolkit to provide visual effects and hardware acceleration. According to GNOME Shell maintainer. Owen Taylor, it is set up as a Mutter plug-in largely written in JavaScript.

It is named after the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu ("humanity towards others").Ubuntu is designed primarily for use on personal computers, although a server edition also exists. Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. Canonical generates revenue by selling technical support and services related to Ubuntu, while the operating system itself is entirely free of charge.   12. 12. Unity is a shell interface for the GNOME desktop environment developed by Canonical Ltd for its Ubuntu operating system. Unity debuted in the net book edition of Ubuntu 10.10. It is designed to make more efficient use of space given the limited screen size of net books, including, for example, a vertical application switcher called the launcher. Unlike GNOME, KDE Software Compilation, Xfce, or LXDE, Unity is not a collection of applications but is designed to use existing GTK+ programs.[ Unity is part of the Ayatana project, an initiative to improve the user experience within Ubuntu. In addition to Unity, there are Application Indicators and other projects such as MeMenu, the notificationUnity Desktop system and the application NotifyOSD gathered.

It aims to be fast and lightweight, while still being visually appealing and easy to use. It consists of separately packaged components that together provide the full functionality of the desktop environment, but which can be selected in subsets to create the users preferred personal working environment. Xfce is mainly used for its ability to run a modern desktop environment on relatively modest hardware. Xfce is included as one of the graphical user interfaces on the Pandora handheld gaming system.XFCE Desktop
  15. 15. LXDE is a free and open source desktop LXDE environment for Unix and other POSIX compliant platforms, such as Linux or BSD. The goal of the project is to provide a desktop environment that is fast and energy efficient. The name LXDE stands for "Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment". LXDE is designed to work well with computers on the low end of the performance spectrum such as older resource-constrained machines, new generation net books, and other small computers, especially those with low amounts of RAM.[3] Testing on Ubuntu has shown that LXDE 0.5 has the lowest memory usage compared to GNOME 2.29, KDE 4.4, and Xfce 4.6, and also consumes less energy, which means mobile computers with LXDE drain their battery at a slower pace than those with other desktop environments.
