A site assessment was conducted and it was found that the surface of the airstrip was covered with loose gravel, was experiencing the loss of fine material, foreign object debris (FOD) was difficult to see, the surface was slippery when wet and dangerous for emergency reverse thrust as well as causing damage to the aircraft and the tyres of the aircraft.

Soil Solutions provided technical assistance and supplied the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) for the surface seal of the airstrip. The scope of work consisted of a light grading of the surface to remove the loose gravel and debris that was prevalent and then the surface was contoured to ensure for proper water run off.

Project Name: Kahama Airstrip Upgrade ______________________________________ Location: Kahama District, Shinyanga Region, Tanzania ______________________________________ Date: April 2011 ______________________________________ Client: Acacia Mining (African Barrick Gold) ______________________________________ Application: EBS Surface Seal of Airstrip ______________________________________ GPS Coordinates: S 03 50.82 E 32 41.19 Runway 29/11, Length 4228, Elevation 3980 Area: The Buzwagi Mine is in northwest Tanzania, in the Kahama district of the Shinyanga region, approximately 6 km southeast of the town of Kahama and 97km from Bulyanhulu. Background: A site assessment was conducted and it was found that the surface of the airstrip was covered with loose gravel; was experiencing the loss of fine material; foreign object debris (FOD) were difficult to see; the surface was slippery when wet and dangerous for emergency reverse thrust; as well as frequent damage being caused to the aircraft and frequent flat or blown tyres. Project Description: Soil Solutions provided an initial project assessment and proposal that was accepted and implemented. Soil Solutions was on site to provide technical assistance during the application of Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) for the Surface Seal of the airstrip. The next step was to pre-wet the surface with water using a water truck prior to compaction of the surface followed by the application of the EBS with multiple coats using a water truck with a pump and proper spray mechanism that allowed the EBS Soil Stabilizer to be applied in a homogenous and efficient manner. Result: The application of the EBS Surface Seal seals and protects the surface from erosion, loss of fines, cracking or pothole formation and most importantly eliminates dust and allows for increased safety, visible FOD, improved skid resistance, reduced rolling resistance, high visibility on approach, improved aircraft acceleration, no dust and zero damage to aircraft. Synopsis: The site assessment revealed that the condition of the airstrip needed attention, as loose gravel was prevalent on the surface, which was causing visibility issues, landing problems, damage to the aircraft, and causing unsafe conditions for emergency reverse thrust situations. Solution: In August of 2012, the airstrip surface was lightly skimmed using a grader to remove any imperfections and properly contoured for drainage, all oversized particles were removed, the surface was compacted and EBS was applied as a surface seal using several coats over the airstrip and taxiway. Result: An all weather airstrip surface that is now preserved and protected from erosion and degradation (including, cracks, corrugation, and material loss), with improved skid resistance and better pilot visibility.
