commodity of the digital world —
and also its fiercest source of
debate.

Data is just information, but
information is everything. Without
it there would be no why or
because, and human productivity
would cease.
What is Data?
We are now treading new
and murky waters, facing two
particular questions: What
information do we need, and
how much?
2018 was flooded with ongoing
revelations about personal data –
from the Cambridge Analytica
scandal to GDPR in Europe. Now,
the whole world’s asking: What are
they doing with their data and why?
Quality, Quantity, and Questions
The biggest point of concern for
many individuals is the sheer
quantity of information gathered
and an uncertainty over whether
it’s all necessary. So, is it?
Data management in business
extends far beyond personal
customer data: revenue,
seasonal performance,
conversions, social activity — the
list of data points is endless.
We praise analytical tools for
becoming more powerful – and
making us more powerful. But do
we really need so much power?
Filter data before it reaches analysis. If your
data comes from asking questions, build

  • 2. Data has become the hottest commodity of the digital world — and also its fiercest source of debate. Getting Started
  • 3. Data is just information, but information is everything. Without it there would be no why or because, and human productivity would cease. What is Data?
  • 4. We are now treading new and murky waters, facing two particular questions: What information do we need, and how much?
  • 5. 2018 was flooded with ongoing revelations about personal data – from the Cambridge Analytica scandal to GDPR in Europe. Now, the whole world’s asking: What are they doing with their data and why? Quality, Quantity, and Questions
  • 6. The biggest point of concern for many individuals is the sheer quantity of information gathered and an uncertainty over whether it’s all necessary. So, is it?
  • 7. Data management in business extends far beyond personal customer data: revenue, seasonal performance, conversions, social activity — the list of data points is endless.
  • 8. We praise analytical tools for becoming more powerful – and making us more powerful. But do we really need so much power?
  • 9. Filter data before it reaches analysis. If your data comes from asking questions, build custom surveys to ask the right ones. If you use consumer activity data, reassess to see which data is useful and which isn’t — and be proactive about optimizing input. Deploy the Data Doormen
