  • Target markets Leading big data revolution fueling economy around data productsMost effective processing model for mining insights from arbitrarily structured dataRuns analyses that are increasingly expensive using traditional systems Uniquely designed to store and manage extremely large volumes of data reliably_________________________The promise of HadoopWe are living in the era of Human Information. Human Information is made up of ideas and information 97,000 tweets every second 12 million texts every minute 294 billion emails every day Hadoop is a rapidly growing platform but the Hadoop wave has brought forward many pain points…Poor documentation and limited supportHighly complex to install, administer and monitorProgramming Java Map/Reduce is HardShortage of employable Hadoop expertiseHard to move data in and out of HadoopMuch like Linux, Hadoop is an open source platform that has been embellished with many features by private vendors such as Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR. HP’s engineering teams work closely with each of these vendors to provide solutions, reference architectures and services that best fit their needs. We see use cases of Big Data all around us. Big Data has applications to most industry verticals today even for traditional businesses which are accumulating tons of data through internal and external processes. Some instances of the types of data enterprises are analyzing are:Web log file analysis (who is visiting my website?)Sentiment analysis (what are customers saying about me?)Recommendation engines (what are my customers/visitors likely to buy?)Ad targeting (which ads will appeal to a specific viewer?)Risk modeling (what is the default risk of my credit card holders?)Customer churn analysis (why are my customers leaving?)Web crawling (traditional web search)Predictive analytics (what predictions can I make based on my data?)
  • Integrating parts for a large cluster is time-consuming and error proneGiven the cluster integrates hardware and open-source & proprietary software, debugging can be complexLarge clusters result in an exponential increase in both HW and SW failure rates and management complexityMoving data in and out of Hadoop clusters is manual and complex

  • As I mentioned, the HPAppSystem for PDW is a complete product, optimized specifically for the requirements of today’s enterprise data warehousing and designed for the future. The system ships complete from HP’s factory as an integrated set of hardware and software including servers, storage, networking, as well as the unique tools and utilities that we’ve talked about. In addition, HP pre-loads the system with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse software, although licensing for the software is negotiated separately and directly with Microsoft. On-site installation and deployment services are also included and delivered jointly by Microsoft and HP to ensure that the system is implemented properly and that time-to-value is minimized. Finally, support services are delivered jointly under a unique collaborative support agreement between HP and Microsoft. HP support services at the level you select are included in the price of the AppSystem. Microsoft support services are priced and purchased separately. Complementary consulting services are available, but specifically not bundled into the base product to provide flexibility. Now that you’re aware what’s in the box, let me go one level deeper into each of the key dimensions we talked about on the previous slide to provide a better look at what we’re planning.<Next slide>
  • Note to speaker: this is where the hidden slide #10 may provide a reference point either for you or to review with your prospect as the concepts and functions of the current system are relevant to v2.The first thing that you’ll notice is that the base system is contained within one rack. As I mentioned previously, reducing footprint for the entry point into the solution was a key design criteria. The Control Node and Management Node functionality is virtualized as part of the system and supported through one of the Passive Servers (HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 with 256 GB memory) as noted on the slide. The second passive server comes into play during an event when failover is required and is part of the High Availability approach for the system. The third Passive Server is Optional. Each individual Compute Node is comprised of 2 HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 servers with 256GB memory paired with 1 HP D6000 high density storage enclosures (70 HDD (7.2K) of either 1, 2, or 3 TB capacity) to form a modular building block, referred to as the Base Scale Unit for the first block in the rack. Additional building blocks are referred to as Active Scale Units. Infiniband FDR connectivity is utilized as well as Ethernet.Landing Zone and Backup components that were previously required to be purchased as part of the appliance are now optional. HP plan to provide guidance for configuration of systems with these functions external to the AppSystem or, alternatively, Landing zone or Backup building blocks can replace 1 or more of the Active Scale Units (described on following slide) and will not count as part of the 64 node limit (also covered on the following slides).Base Scale Unit capacity starts at 15TB and scales from there (as shown on subsequent slide). Details on Hardware and Software components:Hardware:New hardware model based on direct SAS within compute nodes and InfinibandUses the latest Intel CPUs to drive performance, efficiency, and manageabilityUses less expensive and simpler SAS JBODs vs. SAN – improves price/performanceBase Scale Unit (Compute Node):Passive ServerNetworkingWindows 2012:Runs Windows 2012 in all hosts and VMsLeverages new Windows Server 2012 featuresStorage provisioning Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces – performs mirroring functions and availability of spares<Next slide>
