Social Media Club

and the beginning of
    Web 2.0
Web conferences were
expensive, and exclusive.
So we hosted
  Web 2 point 1
and charged $2.80

                                                   Planned in one
                                                   week, hosted at
                                                   local tv station,
                                                      70+ people
                                                      attended.
                                                     It was cool.

Overnight,
we became
community
organizers.
BrainJams
Connecting People, Ideas and Resources
BrainJams
   D.C.
Inter-disciplinary,
peer to peer learning
    was valuable
Things were good,
but some couldn’t
    even spell
inter-disciplinary,
 and most weren’t
  motivated by it.
Social Media
was coming of age.
      *Blogging
     *Podcasting
       *Video
    *Photography
and Chris embarked
on a few road trips.
Kristie stayed home with the cats.
London. Miami. New York. D.C.
  Boston. Portland. Seattle.
   Vancouver. Los Angeles.
If you get it,
         share it.
Not a tag line, it is a way of life.
Local communities
 grew from those
  conversations.
Those conversations
sowed the seeds of an
   international
    community.
It grew organically.
We gave from
our hearts...
and our credit cards.
Social Media Club
     Values:
        *Sharing
    *Helping others
  *Peer to peer learning
  *Radical transparency
Social Media Club
    Mission:
   *Improve media literacy
 *Promote industry standards
   *Sharing lessons learned
*Encouraging ethical behaviour
Learned a lot in
  four years.
Focused on quality
  over quantity.
Gotta have faith.
and patience.
An understanding
partner doesn’t hurt
      either.

Build real

Host conversations that matter.
Create value.
Lead, don't manage.
Deal fairly, and openly,
      with others.
Stand proudly for
  your values.
Not just a job, but a
    way of life.
Find those who believe
   in what you do.

Build out SMC platform
  to connect people,
 ideas and resources.
