Twitter For PR Professionals

 1. 1. Twitter for PR Professionals or Why do they keep saying we can't use Twitter?
 2. 2. Twitter – What it isn't

Twitter is not:

A channel for press/media releases

A corporate 'push' channel

An advertising medium

 3. 3. Twitter – What is it?

Twitter is a

Two-way

Person to person

Communication and

Engagement

Tool

 4. 4. Twitter – Two-way

You cannot broadcast on Twitter.

If you do, you will be found out.

Successful Twitter feeds are two-way and can be consumer led or business led.

FACT - The least successful Twitter feeds are streams of press release links.

 5. 5. Twitter – Person to Person

A lot of social media gurus will tell you about B2C and B2B Twitter accounts. They are WRONG!

On Twitter, people connect with people. Those people can be business employees but they must be people – with a bit of personality.

Twitter is a P2P system.

 6. 6. Twitter – Communication & Engagement

Communication on Twitter takes time because it is about conversation and engagement.

There are NO short cuts.

If people talk to you and you do not reply, you will be toast.

Conversation is king.

 7. 7. Twitter – Rethink your Strategy

You can now completely rethink the way you do PR.

Twitter is a broadcast medium where the receiver can and will reply – and they will expect and need a response.

You cannot ignore the readers.

 8. 8. Twitter – What's your plan?

Do you have a plan? Great!

You are about to unleash your plan into a world of anarchy.

You will not get to point 2 before it is derailed!

You can only plant the seed and guide the conversation – you cannot control it.

 9. 9. Twitter – Shall I just ignore it?

You could. But you will fail.

Major brands are now moving from mainstream PR to social media teams – they are going to the consumer because the consumer will no longer go to them.

The paradigm has shifted and will never shift back

 10. 10. Twitter – Why pick on PRs?

Almost a decade of working in politics and PR has led to me being followed on Twitter by dozens of PRs.

All of them claim to 'get' Twitter.

80% of them do not. They understand the importance of social media but cannot fathom, culturally, how it works.

 11. 11. Twitter – Why pick on PRs? 2

News media now crowd sources news from social media.

Consumers now crowd source recommendations for products & services.

PRs now need to understand the importance of embracing anarchy – and if you don't get it, you need to start asking questions.

 12. 12. Twitter – Say Hi!

Please feel free to disagree with me! Or agree! It's all about the conversation.

Find me on Twitter with username @jamesmb

This presentation is made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 2.0 UK: England & Wales Licence by James Barisic.
