  2. 2. Twitter – What it isn't <ul><li>Twitter is not: </li></ul><ul><li>A channel for press/media releases </li></ul><ul><li>A corporate 'push' channel </li></ul><ul><li>An advertising medium </li></ul>
  3. 3. Twitter – What is it? <ul><li>Twitter is a </li></ul><ul><li>Two-way </li></ul><ul><li>Person to person </li></ul><ul><li>Communication and </li></ul><ul><li>Engagement </li></ul><ul><li>Tool </li></ul>

Twitter – Two-way <ul><li>You cannot broadcast on Twitter. </li></ul><ul><li>If you do, you will be found out. </li></ul><ul><li>Successful Twitter feeds are two-way and can be consumer led or business led. </li></ul><ul><li>FACT - The least successful Twitter feeds are streams of press release links. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Twitter – Person to Person <ul><li>A lot of social media gurus will tell you about B2C and B2B Twitter accounts. They are WRONG! </li></ul><ul><li>On Twitter, people connect with people. Those people can be business employees but they must be people – with a bit of personality. </li></ul><ul><li>Twitter is a P2P system. </li></ul>

Twitter – Communication & Engagement <ul><li>Communication on Twitter takes time because it is about conversation and engagement. </li></ul><ul><li>There are NO short cuts. </li></ul><ul><li>If people talk to you and you do not reply, you will be toast. </li></ul><ul><li>Conversation is king. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Twitter – Rethink your Strategy <ul><li>You can now completely rethink the way you do PR. </li></ul><ul><li>Twitter is a broadcast medium where the receiver can and will reply – and they will expect and need a response. </li></ul><ul><li>You cannot ignore the readers. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Twitter – What's your plan? <ul><li>Do you have a plan? Great! </li></ul><ul><li>You are about to unleash your plan into a world of anarchy. </li></ul><ul><li>You will not get to point 2 before it is derailed! </li></ul><ul><li>You can only plant the seed and guide the conversation – you cannot control it. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Twitter – Shall I just ignore it? <ul><li>You could. But you will fail. </li></ul><ul><li>Major brands are now moving from mainstream PR to social media teams – they are going to the consumer because the consumer will no longer go to them. </li></ul><ul><li>The paradigm has shifted and will never shift back </li></ul>

Twitter – Why pick on PRs? <ul><li>Almost a decade of working in politics and PR has led to me being followed on Twitter by dozens of PRs. </li></ul><ul><li>All of them claim to 'get' Twitter. </li></ul><ul><li>80% of them do not. They understand the importance of social media but cannot fathom, culturally, how it works. </li></ul>

Twitter – Why pick on PRs? 2 <ul><li>News media now crowd sources news from social media. </li></ul><ul><li>Consumers now crowd source recommendations for products & services. </li></ul><ul><li>PRs now need to understand the importance of embracing anarchy – and if you don't get it, you need to start asking questions. </li></ul>
