  1. 1. LARNED MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY MARCH MONTHLY REPORT GWEN LEHMAN, LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST JANICE KNEISLEY, LIBRARY ASSISTANT Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! In March the 6th grade students celebrated Dr. SeussBirthday with Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! This was thelast book conceptualized by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. After his death in 1991, Geisels editor, Janet Schulman, received some rough sketches and verse that would becomeHooray for Diffendoofer Day! Childrens poet Jack Prelutskyand award-winning illustrator Lane Smith were called upon tocollaborate and complete Geisels final work. The story takesplace at a school with quirky, creative teachers whoencourage and enlighten the minds of their young students. Then, one day the dreaded news comes that all the studentsmust take a standardized test and if they dont pass theirbeloved school will close causing everyone to transfer to thedreary school in the next town. After listening to the story, the students were askedto create a unique teacher. The real challenge came whenthe students were told they had to draw a picture of theirteacher using Google Drawing and they would becollaborating with a partner who would draw on the samepicture as them at the same time. The students were to alsogive their teacher a name and describe the unique class theytaught. As the students rose to the challenge, theydiscovered an increased need for communication and divisionof tasks. With our previous programs, one student usuallydid all the work and the other gave some input, but didn’thave a real active role as a collaborator. With the newGoogle tools, students are finding the true meaning ofcollaboration and accountability for performing their portionof the project. Once the drawings were completed, the studentsemailed them to Ms. Lehman, who printed them out anddisplayed them in the library. Students have enjoyed cominginto the library and showing their creations to their friends.
