Natural Birth VS Hospital birthsBy: Tay lo r Sm it h
A Few FactsMidwives attend over 70% of births in Europe & Japan (U.S. less than 8%)The United States has the second worst newborn death rate in the developedworld. The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among allindustrialized countriesIn 1900, 95% of births in the US took place at home.In 1938, half of all births took place at home.By 1955, less than 1% of births took place at home…it remains that numbertoday.
• In the early 1900’s physicians mostly in the East, but also in the Deep South, went on a very effective smear campaign against midwives.• They would make posters showing a foreign granny midwife in a very poor home delivering a baby and say ‘Would you want this kind of person to deliver your baby?’• Midwives were portrayed as a vestige of the old country. They were dirty, they were ignorant, and they were illiterate. Hospitals were offered as this gleaming wonderful place where you could go and have a baby that would be cleaner and safer. In reality giving birth with an obstetrician at that time was much more dangerous than giving birth with a midwife because doctors were graduating from medical school, many of them had not witnessed a live birth before they set out to practice.
Fight for Natural Birth“They tell women, ‘You can come to the hospital and havethe birth however you want’, but then you get there andrealize, ‘No…the hospital is really set up one way, for onekind of birth, and you just get put through that system.’And it’s a fight to try to not get put through that system.”-Quote from a woman in The Business of Being BornAbout 90% of patients at some point are on some kind ofaugmentation.Pitosen is used to induce labor. It makes the contractionslonger, stronger, and closer together. Then they give youan epidural to help with the pain, but this slows the labordown, so they give you more pitosen. Now you can’t feelthe pain, but the baby can because the contractions arelasting so long that he/she is getting compressed from lackof oxygen and blood supply. This can result in anemergency c-sections, which the doctors don’t mindbecause they are in fact obstetricians. Then there is a factor of “Oh thank god, you saved mybaby!” when in fact you could have easily had a painful, butsafe delivery without the “help” of the OB/GYN.
“Designer birth” is when women schedule their births for a specific time. It is becoming common for New York women or wives of celebrities who “have limited time”. It is usually a C-section with a tummy tuck right afterwards. Victoria Beckham is famous for this.
How Natural Births Work Most natural births take place at the couples home with the assistance of a midwife. Midwives are go through professional training, are there to make labor successful and more comforting, and are ready with medical equipment incase it is needed. Many natural birth take place in a tub of some sort in warm water. The warm eases the pain and water births are much more comfortable. Many couples order/rent a mini- pool that is constructed in their house for the delivery. Women aren’t meant to be laying down with their legs up for birth, it isn’t natural. It makes the pelvis smaller and the stomach muscles weaker, which causes pushing to be much more strenuous. It is much more comfortable for the mother to be free to move around and move her hips so that the baby naturally slides down into position so that gravity can do its part. A vertical birth where the woman is squatting in water is much easier and more comfortable.
