3. WHY A TOOTH DECAYS?
Tooth decay is a disease process where acids created by
specific types of oral bacteria cause damage to the calcified
tissues of a tooth (primarily enamel and dentin).
4. HOW A TOOTH DECAYS?
Every tooth has 3 layers:
Enamel (White), Dentin (Yellow) and Pulp (Pink)

5. Continuous Food deposits and sticky
products ( Fast Foods) can cause a pit and
spread from enamel towards Pulp.
6. Once the decay spreads towards the pulp
infection travels towards the tip of the root.
7. Increase in the infection/ Pus at the root leads to
throbbing pain. This infection may spread to the
bone level later leading to Periapical Cyst or a
Precancerous lesion of bone if neglected.
8. If the tooth is neglected at this stage the
infection becomes chronic and breaks

possible for the dentist to just make a repair rather than replace the
whole thing.

4. Glass ionomer chemically bond to the tooth structure so are less
likely to fall out
5. Glass ionomer release fluoride into the cavity so there is very little
chance of having recurrent decay

•They are relatively inexpensive, compared with alternatives.
•An amalgam filling can be completed in one dental visit.
35. After cavity preparation, the cavity is conditioned and glass ionomer
cement is placed in the cavity and composite resin above the cement.
The so-called sandwich technique involves using glass ionomer cement
as dentine replacement and a composite to replace enamel.
