MilSatCom USA “A really worthwhile conference.
Well supported and organised”
MilSatCom USA attendee, 2016
Conference Chairman’s Welcome Letter
Dear Colleague,
The purpose of this note is to invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual MilSatCom
USA conference taking place on 28 and 29 June, 2017 in Arlington, VA.
Like many of you, I have attended more conferences such as this than I can count
or recall, so I understand you must have a good reason to dedicate two full days plus
any travel time to yet another satellite event. For those of you who have taken part
in the highly respected Global MilSatCom event in London, SMi Group decided last
year to make it easier for US government and industry experts by putting together
a similar forum in the Washington DC area, and I personally hosted the first day of
discussions.Becauseofthepositivefeedbackfromlastyear,Ihaveagainvolunteered
to the chair the conference and hope you will join us.
MilSatCom USA will be sharply focused on the defense communication satellite
segment. 2017 is a pivotal year for US decision makers as the Wideband Analysis
of Alternatives progresses at the same time the US redoubles its efforts to ensure its
spacecapabilitieswillberesilientenoughtosurviveandoperateinthefaceofrapidly
developing threats. An important element of resiliency is of course international
cooperation, and MilSatCom USA, more than any other event I have seen, provides
in-depth examinations of the key international issues.
We have invited a number of influential government leaders and expect the turnout
to be even better than last year. As always, the event will be structured so as to allow
for maximum interaction between senior officials and the audience. Please take a
close look at the agenda and mark your calendar. I very much hope to see you in
June at MilSatCom USA 2017.
Best Regards,
Tip Osterthaler, BrigGen (USAF, Ret)
Conference Chairman

TECHNICAL INSIGHTS: FUTURE MILSATCOM SYSTEMS
4. Overview of the workshop:
Space Systems are increasingly complex, with
large trade spaces that require consideration
of many elements. By applying systematic
processes in SatCom space system architecture
studies, decision makers gain insight into both
the advantages and disadvantages of different
options to support future courses of action.
Architecting space systems requires a big-
picture view of the problem being addressed,
including understanding current shortfalls and
future needs. In the course of an architecture
study, many tools and processes are used to
identify options, understand the risks associated
with the options, and to run excursions within
the trade space. In this workshop, an overview
of architecting space systems will be presented,
with a discussion of principles, tools, techniques
and processes that may be applied to
develop and evaluate concepts for Analysis
of Alternatives (AoA) on current national
programs.
Why should you attend this workshop:
• Learn about some of the tools and techniques
for SatCom system architecture development
• Explore the process of SatCom system
architecture evaluation
• Example of application to a recently
completed SatCom study will be provided
