  2. 2. Identity Theft Leverage your people with technology What is identity theft? Basically, using your personal information without your knowledge or permission. Usually name, SS#, credit card. More than technology methods. In 1998, it became a Federal Crime. Why me? Wildebeest…
  3. 3. Numbers Leverage your people with technology A U.S. Citizen has about a 4% chance of being a victim of identity theft. 85 million consumers alerted in the past 15 months. Total one year fraud estimates were at $56.6 billion in 2006. Gas well drillers using more than 2,000 gallons per month of city water will be charged a higher rate.
  4. 4. Action Plan (3 Ds) Leverage your people with technology Deter- protect your information Defend- act as soon as you suspect, document Detect- monitor your statements and audit credit report

Deter <ul><li>Get a shredder for home (dumpster diving) </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t let Credit Cards outside your view (skimmers) </li></ul><ul><li>Locking mailbox/ PO Box </li></ul><ul><li>Protect your SS# (don’t carry SS card in wallet) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You are allowed to ask- Why need?, How used?, How protect?, What if I don’t? </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Don’t print personal information on checks (DL# or SS#) </li></ul><ul><li>Photocopy both sides of credit cards for records (report theft ASAP to limit liability 2d/$50, 60d/$500) </li></ul><ul><li>Secure your personal information (extra checks, service people, roommates) </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t advertise to people that you are away from home (stop papers, use timers, mail hold) </li></ul><ul><li>Drop outgoing mail at post office </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t give out personal information on the phone (unless you called them) </li></ul><ul><li>Beware false job postings requesting personal information </li></ul><ul><li>Watch newspapers for large scale compromises- no fault of yours (Veterans, Colleges, Employers) </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t send confidential information using wireless or email </li></ul><ul><li>Beware selling old PCs in garage sales (wipe drives) </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t use obvious passwords </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t click links in emails, look real but usually longer URLs are more suspect (downloads, phishing) </li></ul><ul><li>Use firewalls, anti-virus, anti-spyware software, OS updates (updated definitions) </li></ul>Leverage your people with technology

Detect <ul><li>Audit credit card and banking statements (how 50% caught) </li></ul><ul><li>Watch for late bills (possible change of address) </li></ul><ul><li>Watch for unexpected credit cards or statements </li></ul><ul><li>Unexplained credit denials </li></ul><ul><li>Audit credit report once a year (it’s free) </li></ul>Leverage your people with technology

Defend <ul><li>Contact one of 3 major credit bureaus </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Equifax: (800) 525-6285; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Experian: (888) 397-3742; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Trans Union: (800) 680-7289. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Place fraud alert (90 days or 7yr extended), ask them to alert you BEFORE any new accounts opened </li></ul><ul><li>Contact any tampered account creditors in writing and CLOSE. </li></ul><ul><li>Contact FTC (877) 438-4338- Complete ID Theft Affidavit </li></ul><ul><li>Complete a police report- may need to follow-up with police (creditors require report) </li></ul><ul><li>Document- document- document </li></ul>Leverage your people with technology
