Gautama Buddha had a cousin named Devadatta who was
extremely jealous of the Buddha.
Devadatta was a disciple monk of the Buddha. He wanted to
take the place of the Buddha as the leader of the Sangha
when the Buddha was getting old. To this the Buddha did not
agree.
释迦牟尼佛有一个表弟，名叫提婆达多，他非常嫉妒佛陀。提婆
达多是佛陀的弟子。 当佛陀年老时，他想接替佛陀成为僧团的领
袖。 对此，佛陀并不同意。

Devadatta felt that he himself was as good as the Buddha. He was
jealous that people ignored him and did not honor him the way they
honored the Buddha.
Hence Devadatta was constantly coming up with schemes to kill the
Buddha.
One day he devised a plot to kill Buddha. He knew that the Buddha was
going to pass through a particular village on His alms rounds.
提婆达多觉得自己和佛陀一样善。 他嫉妒人们忽视他，没有像尊敬佛陀那
样尊敬他。所以提婆达多不断地想出弑佛的计谋。有一天，他设计了一个谋
杀佛陀的阴谋。 他知道佛陀托钵时会经过一个特定的村庄。

Before the Buddha came into the village, Devadatta got hold of the
mad elephant Nalagiri. He fed the elephant with a lot of liquor to make
it drunk.
His plan was to make use of the drunk elephant to trample the Buddha
to death.
The Buddha was leading his group of monks into the village on alms
round.
在佛陀入村之前，提婆达多抓住了那拉吉里的疯象。 他给大象喂了很多
酒，让它喝醉。他的计划是利用醉象来踩死佛陀。佛陀正率领比丘们到村
里托钵。

When Devadatta saw from a distance that the Buddha was coming, he
immediately used sticks to beat the elephant brutally. The drunken
elephant was in great pain and was totally enraged. Seeing this,
Devadatta immediately released the elephant in the direction
of the Buddha. He intended to have the drunk mad elephant charge at
the Buddha.
提婆达多远远地看见佛陀来了，立刻用棍子狠狠地打大象。
喝醉的大象非常痛苦，而且非常愤怒。 提婆达多见状，立即
将大象放向方向。佛陀的。 他打算让醉酒的疯象冲向佛陀。

Overwhelmed with anger and pain, the elephant was now mad. It
started at full speed charging towards the Buddha. It raised its ears,
tail and trunk making a lot of noise. It was as if thunder was striking
down from the skies.
All the disciples who were with the Buddha were horrified at this
terrible sight, and they wanted to flee from harm's way.
大象被愤怒和痛苦压垮了，现在疯了。 它开始全速冲向佛
陀。 它竖起耳朵、尾巴和鼻子，发出很大的声音。 仿佛雷霆
从天而降。佛陀身边的弟子们都被这可怕的景象吓坏了，想
要逃离险境。

Venerable Ananda, the Buddha’s attendant disciple stepped in front of
the Buddha intending to protect Him from the mad drunk elephant
charging at them.
At that time the Buddha remained totally at ease and composed and
said calmly, “Monks do not be frightened. One who has attained
Buddhahood will not be harmed or killed by external violence.”
佛陀的侍者弟子阿难尊者来到佛陀面前，想要保护佛陀免遭醉
象狂袭。尔时，佛陀安然自在，平静地说：“比丘们不要害
怕。 成佛者，不为外力所害、所杀。”

Asking Ananda to step aside and go to the back of Him, the Buddha
faced the charging elephant with calmness and composure.
He looked into the eyes of the elephant and radiated great Metta
(loving-kindness) and compassion for the poor elephant.
The Buddha’s Metta and compassion was so strong and powerful that
the elephant was overwhelmed by this great force of love.
佛陀请阿难退到他的背后，平静地面对冲来的大象。他看着
大象的眼睛，对可怜的大象散发出伟大的慈心和同情心。佛
陀的慈悲心如此强烈，以至于大象被这股伟大的慈爱力量所
淹没。

When the elephant was just a short distance in front of the Buddha, it
stopped in its path and calmed down.
It then trotted towards Buddha, and respectfully bowed its head to the
Buddha. The Buddha stroked the elephant's trunk and head and
comforted it with soft and kind words.
As the Buddha spoke, the mad elephant drew nearer him. It knelt
down and became tame.
当大象距离佛陀不远时，它停了下来，平静下来。然后它小跑到佛陀面
前，恭敬地向佛陀磕头。 佛陀抚摸着大象的鼻子和头部，并用温柔而仁慈
的话语安慰它。当佛陀说话时，那头疯狂的大象就靠近了他。 它跪了下

The Buddha taught the elephant about taking refuge in the Triple Gem.
As the elephant listened, tears flowed down from its eyes.
So Devadatta’s attempt to kill the Buddha with a mad drunk elephant did not
succeed.
(Devadatta had also tried to kill the Buddha on two other occasions.)
For his evil deeds, Devadatta would suffer terrible consequence. After his
death, he was reborn into the Avici Hell.
佛陀教导大象皈依三宝。大象听了，眼泪从眼里流了下来。
所以提婆达多试图用一头疯醉的大象杀死佛陀的企图没有成
功。（提婆达多还曾两次试图杀死佛陀。）由于他的恶行，
提婆达多将遭受可怕的后果。 他死后，投生到无间地狱。
