Can YouTube be used in the
classroom?
 YouTube is a platform originally designed
for entertainment; However it does contain
a substantial amount of educational
material
 In 2009, YouTube EDU was developed as a
source of information complete with
lectures, courses and examples for
educators and professionals
What factors must we
consider?
 The effectiveness of blended
learning
 Attention and memory
 Skill and development
application
 Diversity and learning needs
Blended Learning Theory
 Use of multimedia to help
students understand material
that would otherwise be
esoteric.
 For example, a history
teacher may use a short video
to compliment his or her
lesson because it may be
more direct in its approach
to providing information.

Traditional methods of teaching
that help students to build
natural academic skills
(vocabulary, critical
thinking, writing, research,
etc.)
Attention and memory
Attention
 To get students attention,
source material at time may
need to be relatable
 The use of visuals combined
sounds such as those in a
YouTube can help those in the
classroom who are visual or
auditory learners and add
clarity to what the teacher
is explaining.
Memory
To create a memory, students can
be exposed to information via
sensory input that is either
visual (icon)or audio (echo).
If students find the information
stimulating, they are more
likely to retain it.
Skill Development and
Application
YouTube can now be used to help students important skills.
 The idea of using active visuals the demonstrate to students how
to perform a task, or skill can be extremely helpful
 YouTube can help to speed up the learning process, for instance
when examining how organisms grow, or slow things down when
examining speed and velocity.
 It can also be used to teach students how to speak different
languages, improve the skills of mastering their own language
and also help improve math skills through content that promotes
activity (song, dance, exercise, etc.)
 YouTube can make information more attainable through its display
of moving visuals complimented by sound
Diversity and Learning
Needs
 YouTube has content that appeals to the diversity within student
population.
 It can explain material from perspectives that textbooks cannot
and teachers may not be able to due to their own human
experience
 Because, YouTube us marketed to people across most if not all
social divides, it is more likely to have content available that
can be used to address the diverse points of view, and ways in
which students learn in a classroom.
Pitfalls
 Finding content that is appropriate may be challenging
 If the classroom is filled with younger students, there is a
possibility of decrease in creativity because due to the
convenience of finding content that can quickly stimulate them
 Because YouTube is an open platform, a teacher may find content
that presents information that was not researched by
knowledgeable people, and therefore could be wrong
Pitfalls continued
 The teacher could rely to heavily on the online content and not
engage the students in the learning experience as he or she has
been paid to do.
 Therefore the instructor is less inspired to teach, because
YouTube is doing the teaching for them.
 Education becomes an inactive experience and because the other
sections of their brains that require social interaction,
reading, thinking and movement are not being stimulated,
students are not learning
Final Statement
 YouTube can be a great tool for
for instruction if used
sparingly, when it is need to
further explain concept that may
be too difficult yo understand
all at once.
