CONSIDER
• What ifyou had to learn AND teach an unfamiliar topic?
Up until 2018 our Senior Library Assistants (SLAs) had been rota-ed every day on the
enquiry desks or the phones, helping students with basic transactional questions
like how to find a book, how to pay a library fine, where the printers were, etc.
• How did it feel to be asked to teach unexpectedly?
Then a restructure happened and they were transferred across to a new team, to deliver
workshops and 1-1s on literature searching skills

NOW Feedback fromour SLAs
“I was afraid that I simply wouldn’t have the skills to
be able to communicate the information clearly, or I
may even go blank. I have very little experience in
presenting and I worried this would negatively affect
the sessions and waste the time of the attendees.”
“I was worried about the students – how my lack
of experience would impact on their learning. How
would they feel being taught by a beginner?
Would my delivery meet their expectations? It
might be a disappointment.”
“I thought there'd be more
documentation, maybe a script!”
“I was nervous initially but got helpful feedback: that I
had a tendency to rush and was over-dependent on
notes. Knowing this helped for the next time.”
“I realised I generally knew a lot more than the students [in 1-1s]. I
was not confronted with difficult questions as I had feared. I'm
learning new things and finding the experience challenging and
rewarding, especially when you see the benefit it has for a learner.”
“Although I’m still nervous prior to delivering a session I
am surprised to find I enjoy presenting them and gain a lot
of satisfaction from feedback such as ‘I didn’t know about
all this. I’ve only ever used Google’”
“I very much appreciate the gentle, staggered approach
to shadowing and then leading sessions. Very much
pressure free.”
NOW Feedback fromlearners
“[…] was a dream. He was knowledgeable, kind and a great
person to chat to. He took me through my search and offered
a fresh perspective on ways to improve it. It was a really
valuable and enjoyable session for me. […] I went in not really
confident in what I was doing and left feeling much more
confident and self assured. Sometimes having someone [just]
telling you you are on the right track makes all the difference.”
“[…] was excellent, teaching me how to search and giving
me skills for the future that I understand how to utilise
rather than just doing it for me”
“These sessions are always incredibly helpful, but somehow
my brain degenerates in the meantime, and I have to go
back and ask all the same old dumb questions. However, […]
was blessed with more patience than I think I’ve
encountered in anyone in my whole life, and he calmly and
kindly reminds me what I should be doing and gets me back
on track. Thank you, thank you, thank you”
“[…] was really helpful, especially with breaking things down for someone
who's unsure where to start for conducting a systematic review”
“I found the session extremely useful as
I’d relied on Google Scholar for years
and the use of databases felt daunting.”
