Persuasive Essay On Warriors DonT Cry
A personal story of discrimination, dedication, and salvation. Warriors Don t Cry is a gritty,
impassioned memoir written by Melba Pattillo Beals. The memoir deals with Melba s childhood
as she experiences racism and discrimination first hand. Some segments of this book may be
considered inappropriate for some readers. There is controversy surrounding whether or not the
book is appropriate for school students, specifically tenth graders. I believe that Warriors Don t
Cry is appropriate for tenth graders to read. This book is appropriate because it shows today s
youth how different society was just few decades ago, and how long and difficult it was to get to
where we are today. It is also an important reminder to keep striving for equality in our society
today. Finally, this book shows how far dedication, determination, and sacrifice can actually go.
The first reason why Warriors Don t Cry is appropriate for tenth graders is because the book
shows how different society was not to long ago. Today, students in the United States go to school,
sit down, and do work. However, in the 1950s, it may not have been so simple. As seen in Warriors
Don t Cry, integration in Central High School in Little Rock, Arizona was not friendly. The group
of African American students that was integrated, called the Little Rock Nine, had it very rough. The
white students would torment them, discriminate them, and physically harm them every day, just
because of their skin color. Central High School

Violent Media Is Good For Kids By Gerard Jones
The essay Violent Media is Good for Kids by Gerard Jones was published by the New York
Times in 2000. Jones was a well known author both in fiction and nonfiction and mainly focused
on comic books. Jones argues that the violent behaviors depicted in comic books can be
beneficial because they can help children overcome their fears. Jones incorrectly assumes that all
children are the same and although a comic book may help one child, other children may
become emotionally scarred by them. Jones focuses on three stories involving himself, his son,
and a young lady by the name of Emily. In paragraph three, Jones tells us how his mother grew
up in a violent era, not wanting her son to be exposed to such conduct. Until one day a student of
hers enlightened her on the benefits a comic book can have on a child. The Hulk allowed for
Jones to fantasize himself as being all powerful, fearless, and confident in his own skin. Also in
compassion to Jones, in paragraph six, Jones son had a similar encounter but with the comic
book Tarzan . Jones son was faced with the peer pressure of climbing a tree that his friend
previously climbed. With his son being fearful, Jones knew that by allowing his son to become
fixated on the comic of Tarzan would allow for him to put his fear of aside and climb the tree .
Lastly, Jones adds in paragraph twelve, the importance of Emily, a playground bully who with the
help of comic books could control her violent outbursts. Throughout Jones essay, he does a diligent
job of providing valid and reliable evidence, but in paragraph twelve and thirteen when he tells the
story of Emily is looked at as the turning point of his essay for most readers. Emily was known at
school for expressing violent behaviors and depiction violent scenes from comicsand TV shows.
Most mothers would pull Emily s mother aside and express their concerns and worries for the
safety of the other kids who played around her. Emily s mother sought Jones help, fearful that her
child might not be able to differentiate between realities and play time. Jones background allowed
for him to channel Emily s anger by providing her with comics that were most relatable to the action
Emily imitated. Untimely, by Jones telling

Disadvantages Of Professional Kitchen Remodeling
Are you a homeowner who is looking to have your kitchen remodeled? If you are, you likely
already know that you, literally, have an unlimited number of options. In addition to what you
would like remodeled and how you would like everything to look, you can also choose how your
remodeling gets done. While a large number of homeowners make the decision to do their own
kitchen remodeling, there are others who choose to use the assistance of a professional. That
professional is often commonly referred to as a contractor. One of the best ways to determine
whether you not you should use a professional contractor is to examine the advantages and
disadvantages of doing so.
As you may have already assumed, there are an unlimited number of benefits to having your
kitchen remodeled by a professional. Perhaps, the greatest benefit of a professional kitchen
remodeling job is the end result. In almost all cases, you will find that a professional remodeling
job is better than one that is performed by someone without experience. Although it may sound easy
to replace the lighting in your kitchen or your kitchen countertops, you will find that it isn t always
as easy as it sounds. Instead of taking the time to learn, a large number of homeowner automatically
turn to a professional contractor.
Speaking of time, you will also find that time is another advantage to using a professional contractor
to remodel your kitchen. Since professional contractors are experienced at what they do, they

Language In Rabbit Proof Fence
Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington
Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people
being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated
properly. Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australias history. Many aboriginal
children didn t want to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof
Fence has been created from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has
created many representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual
elements and the audio components.
The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous
people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs,
Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that
they were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she
didn t want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had
no authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary.
It was used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. When the Grandmother
came to the car with a large stick, which she may have used to try and break the car windows,

Making predictions also help students to make connections about what is read and real life
experiences. This is a great comprehension strategy because if students are able to make fairly
accurate predictions while reading, he or she will be able to comprehend the story well. Remember
good readers makes predictions.
Step By Step 1. Show students the titles and picture of a book cover they have never read before
and ask them to make a prediction what the book is about.
2. Then read the back cover or inside flap of the book out loud to see how close they came to the
mark.
3. Read a section of text or show another picture and then have students predict what is going to
happen next.
4. Let students write their predictions on sentence strips or prediction card and place each
prediction on the wall. Revisit the predictions once the action has been revealed in the story.
Example
This is an example of a prediction card. Teacher ask the question, where is Pete going? Students
look at each picture and write their guess. The pictures serves as the clue.

Destruction of a Great City in The War of the Worlds by...
In 1898, H G Wells wrote The War of the Worlds, a novel that envisioned the destruction of a great
city and the slaughter of its inhabitants. The invaders were Martians, but aliens were not needed to
make this devastation a reality. In a few years after the publication of the book, human beings
would play the part of inhuman pillaging with the realization of warand its effect toward society.
There has never been a war where no one was killed. From the beginning, man has always been
engaged in hostilities. Suffering and losses become a daily part of life in the front lines. Soldiers
are reduced to expendable objects and losing dignity is present in every soul. There are no
substitutes to the pains that war creates. How does one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They feel that the world is becoming a dangerous place day by day. Their reactions are sudden and
quick. Anxiousness marks their days. The sudden flash of light, the roll of thunder, and an abrupt
sound is a messenger of death to them. They are prone to lose connection with the present when
faced with situations that provoke their responses to danger. When silence engulfs them, visions of
horror hark back. Civilians have also played a major role in these conflicts. The constant threat of
murder lies in the deep recesses of one s thoughts. Ruin, torture, and slaughter dominates the minds
of ethnic minorities. Minorities become the target by the impoverished majority. No one will be so
confident to believe that every war is just and necessary.
There is a common notion that under modern conditions peace cannot be guaranteed except on
the basis of an equal scale of armaments and this may be the cause of stockpiling arms. Justice,
common sense, and the recognition of man s cry for dignity call for a cessation of arms and the
decrease of violence. Furthermore, the eradication of nuclear heads, elimination of land mines,
and the decrease of small arms such as semi automatic rifles and hand grenades will greatly
reduce the constant threat of brutality. A nation full of missiles will less likely offer a place of
security for its citizens and every gunshot is an act of larceny to those whose cries are ignored.

How Anglo American s Stakeholders Influence Carroll s...
Anglo American hired Cynthia Carroll as chief executive officer in hopes that she would
improve the overall performance of the company. Failing to meet their expectations would
almost guarantee her time at the company would be short lived. As CEO she must juggle the
interests of her stakeholders and make decisions that benefit the company. It can prove to be a
difficult task as certain stakeholders hold more power and have more influence when it comes to
making these decisions. In this paper I will be using stakeholder theory to discuss how Anglo
American s stakeholders influence Carroll s decision. Carroll is well aware of the dangers her
employees face, however she must decide whether it is in her best interest to increase safetyor not.
While increasing safety measures may make the company look better, it will come at great costs.
Although Cynthia Carroll is facing some opposition from it s the South African government and its
employees, when taking in the interests of all the company s stakeholders it is clear that she must
keep the mines up and running without taking more safety precautions. Maintaining a good
relationship between business and government is important to the success every company. In this
case, the South African government is important to think about because they alter how Anglo
American deals with its employees, however they do not have enough power to sway the decision
in their favor. The role of government is to Promote economic development and

The 1999 Halloween Rules
This letter is to acknowledge the 1999 Halloween rule that did not allow students to dress in

families, and for the safety of staff and students, I believe that the Halloween costume ban during
school is still the correct decision. The most important factor of schoolis learning and if students
were to freely wear Halloween costumes, not only would it break dress code, it would also disturb
the potential of learning that other students could have during the day. Some students like to wear
large, bright, distracting costumes which would direct the attention off of the teacher or the subject
that students are learning. To me, these distractions create

Essay on The Roman Catholic View of Marriage
The Roman Catholic View of Marriage
Lots of people, male and female, spend there childhoods dreaming about the big day. White
dresses, fresh flowers, big church and of course the rings, just to name a few of the important
things needing to be arranged. People spend months preparing the big day. The list of things to do
never ends food, clothes, guest list and reception. But how often do we stop and think about the
Christian beliefs on marriage. When did we last ask what do the rings mean? Dress mean? Vows
mean? These are just a few of the questions I will try to answer in the following:
Catholics only have one major rule about marriage. They may have lots of others that are equally

This is like the story in the bible of the man who asked god why through the hard the bad times of
his life were why there only one set of foot prints, this is like us we need to carry our partners in
hard times.
Christians believed that Jesus believed that separation is wrong and people should not separate
because to separate is to go against the god giving life to the family. And people who do not want
to receive the gift of life have not had a proper marriage;
man shall leave his mother and father and will be
united with his wife and the shall be one flesh..
let them not separate
this shows that Jesus believed that it was hard to separate because we are no longer one but we are
together and one flesh.
God s commandments lead Christians to a happy life in marriage. Even though Christians never
expect a happy unflawed marriage they use the 10 commandments as a guide line;
You shall not covet your neighbor s wife
(http://www.canadianlawsite.com/10commandments.htm)
This in modern language means you shall not look at your neighbor s (friends) wife provocative
and lustful way. The 10 commandments are the laws every Christian tries to obey.

Pakistan has been involved with the Taliban organization since their founding, and from the major
support that they have given them, it can be considered that they had made the basis of most of

Insight Therapy Paper
Insight Therapies and Action therapies Name Institution Introduction Therapy refers to treatment
methods aimed at making people feel better or function in a better way. Insight therapy and action
therapy fall under psychotherapy. Psychotherapy refers to therapy of mental disorders, which
involves the individual talking to a professional psychologist to solve his problem. This paper
focuses on insight and action therapies. It looks at the goals, the techniques, as well as the
approaches applied in the two different kinds of therapy. The primary objective of insight therapy is
helping the patients understand and gain insight of their behavior, thought, and feelings. The main
purpose of action therapy, on the other hand, is to change poor or inappropriate behavior and
correct it so that the individual acts in a normal way. Insight therapy involves various techniques

How Is Heathcliff A Unsympathetic Character
In Wuthering Heights, BrontГ« presents Linton Heathcliff as arguably one of the most unlikeable,
unsympathetic characters of the novel: he is often described as peevish , is constantly unwell (
faint hearted creature ) and resorts to fits of coughing when he doesn t get his way. He plays a key
role in Heathcliffs revenge plot marrying Cathy to award Heathcliff control of both Thrushcross
Grange and the Heights (although this eventually fails) and reveals its futility in the mean time.
The second generation of the novel offers many parallels, albeit less wild and powerful ones,
with the first generation: the second Cathy is a milder, gentler version of her mother and Hareton
has a definite likeness to Heathcliff (their degradation, appearance etc. however their difference
lies in Hareton s pivotal capacity for forgiveness); Linton, however, is presented as an even more
insufferable, pathetic version of Edgar Linton: he might have been taken for [Edgar s] younger
brother, so strong was the resemblance . This similarity with both Edgar and Isabella (his enemies),
coupled with his name the ultimate insult to Heathcliff ( they wish me to hate it too, do they? )

Durkheim s Work in Sociology Essay
Durkheim s Work in Sociology
Some studies maybe more recent, but Durkheim s work remains the most significant Sociological
analysis of Suicide in modern societies
Assess the extent to which Sociological arguments and evidence support this claim.
In regards to Suicide it would seem perhaps more realistic to consider the subject as an individual
and personal act, a job which might seem more suitable for Psychologists to explain, it may not
seem an obvious subject for a Sociologist to study. In the past it has been more commonly thought
that Suicide was a result of a person s mental state, however suicide was given an all new

Also the statistics showed that the suicide rate dropped in times of war or political upheaval, For
example, the suicide rate dropped 14 percent after war broke out between Austria and Italy in 1866.
And by using multivariate analysis Durkheim confirmed his theory that religion was a main factor
and that it wasnt just dependent on some nations. He found that in Bavaria, which has the highest
number of Roman Catholics in Germany also has the lowest suicide rate.
Continuing on from his research and by using Empirical evidence Durkheim determined that there
were four types of suicide; Altruistic, Fatalistic, Anomic and Egoistic. And that these suicides were
a result of Social Integration or Moral Regulation and the excess or lack of either.
Altruistic is a result of over integration, a self sacrifice out of duty to others or to benefit others.
For example, Hindu widows would kill themselves at their husband s funeral. Egoistic is a result
of under integration, such is when a person isn t sufficiently part of a group to which they should
belong. It can be argued that this is one of the reasons why Protestants are more prone to suicide
than Catholics, because there is a lesser sense of community. Fatalistic is a result of over
regulation, in the case of when a person is too restricted by

Intercultural Competence Of International Recruiters37.
INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE OF INTERNATIONAL RECRUITERS37
Literature Review
Studies of intercultural competence over the past thirty years attempt to measure the success or
growth of an individual s knowledge, skills and attitudes in relation to other cultures (Sinicrope,
Norris Watanabe, 2007). Global learning outcomes such as intercultural communication skills,
intercultural adaptability, intercultural sensitivity, intercultural maturity, and intercultural
competence are skills that universities feel are important to thrive in a diverse society where
effective interactions with people from other cultures is necessary (Deardorff, 2011; Fantini, Arias

Educators need to justify program success by demonstrating annual increases in study abroad
participation numbers in addition to providing quality measures related to cultural learning as well
(Engle Engle, 2003; Medina LГіpez Portillo, 2004). Ideally, students participating in a study abroad
experience will gain an appreciation of their own culture as well as develop sensitivity towards
culturally distinct others (Maharaja, 2009). Students who interact with people from diverse
backgrounds will hopefully accept cultural diversity and overcome negative stereotypes (Dong,
Day, Collaco, 2008). Scholars often associate cultural competency with the skills and behaviors
gained as individuals develop more complex levels of cultural sensitivity (HernГЎndez Kose, 2012,
p. 514). Cultural sensitivity is one of the key ingredients needed to understand and engage in
relationships with those from others from dissimilar backgrounds (HernГЎndez Kose, 2012).
Numerous assessment tools, ranging from simple short surveys to more complex behavioral and
performance evaluations, attempt to measure intercultural competence (Matsumoto Hwang, 2013;

staffing, safety matters, and recruiting instead of

The Safety Of Car Companies
Car companies can show the world they care about unfortunate back over accidents by willingly
adding rear view cameras to all cars sold. If all car manufactures did this, they will be showing
their consumers that they are aware that there is a major issue of children and the elderly
getting injured by these preventable accidents as well as show everyone they are willing to do
whatever they can to prevent these types of accidents from happening further. If car companies
are able to set their greed aside and look at the number of children s lives that could be saved if
all vehicles were required to have rear view cameras come standard in them it would create a
higher demand for all vehicles as well as show the world that these companies care more about
preventing accidental tragedies rather than making a profit. It s very important and should soon
become a basic requirement for all cars in the United States to have back up cameras.
Most car related accidents that happen directly to children under the age of 5 are known as back
over accidents. A back over sounds pretty self explanatory, and we all assume people would make
sure they always looked in their rear view mirrors before reversing however; it only takes a second
for a child to crawl behind a car into a driver s blatant blind spot. Back over accidents are when a
car literally drives over a person as it is reversing. 1,200 children under 15 who were killed since

Kennewick Man or The Ancient Man is the name given to the skeletal remains of a man found in
Kennewick, Washington on July 28,1996. A pair of bystanders accidentally found the skeleton
remains of the Kennewick Man. With the discovery it has brought up many disagreements about
what to do with the Kennewick man. The question now is who is really responsible for the remains
of the Kennewick Man.
The remains of the Kennewick man are one of the oldest and complete remains ever found. The
estimated 9,000 year old skeleton is described as Caucasoid. After the discovery it was described as
one of the most complete male skeletons ever unearthed in America. The Kennewick Man remains
were the subject of a court battle between researchers who want to learn all they can about The

Summary Of Daniel James Brown s The Boys In The Boat
I recently read Daniel James Brown s riveting, captivating, and inspiring nonfiction story The Boys
in the Boat. The author s message that was conveyed throughout the book was that triumph can be
achieved against the greatest of odds, and that nothing is impossible when matched with the power
of hard work and persistence. The Boys in the Boat is the story of the rowingcrew of the University
of Washington and their incredible journey from a somber beginning in the Great Depression
struck city of Seattle to victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The story has a great focus on one
specific member of the team, Joe Rantz, and his own personal struggles, from losing his one and
only mother, to being virtually abandoned and left to live on his own at a very young age. It also
shines light on the never ending adversity the University of Washington crew had to overcome as a
whole. Both of these concepts, along with a lot more, greatly contribute to the powerful message
that was conveyed by the author.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He tried to use dreary and desolate words to describe the city of Seattle and its state during the
Great Depression to capture the mood of how hopeless everyone had felt at the time, as well as
how hard the boys physically had to work to earn just a little bit of money. This was a great way
for the author to express his message in my opinion, because it showed just how difficult the
conditions were for the boys from a very early stage in the book, and made their eventual success at
the Olympics much more triumphant. By showing where the boys had started in their journey, with
hard work to get through the Great Depression, the author truly emphasized his message that
anything can be achieved, no matter how difficult it may

The suitability of the use of animal models and SiRNA Technologies in autosomal dominantly

Dr P Martin
Biomedical Science
Abstract: The treatment of dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease has been not feasible
until recent discovers of gene therapy. Discovers such as short interfering RNA (siRNA) which
cause gene silencing due to the molecule forming a complex with messenger RNA (mRNA),
resulting in the degradation of mRNA through pathways in the cell. The siRNA properties shows
the potential in the treatment of such diseases. However the advancements of such therapies

However the prevalence of such diseases is in areas where there are small community resulting in
interbreeding, for example Huntington s disease (HD) and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS); are
prime examples of such incidents. This class of diseases causes the apoptosis of neurons and
surrounding cells. The outcome for the sufferers has often been death. However there is promising
developments in gene therapy, including SiRNA therapy in the treatment of these diseases.
Small Interfering RNA (SiRNA) was discovered by Andrew Fire and Craig Mello, receiving the
Nobel Prize in 2006 for their work. (Kaur et al, 2012) Typically SiRNA are between 21 and 23
RNA nucleotides in length. SiRNA has the ability to cause the inactivity of a genes expression in
somatic mammalian cells; has proven to be an exceptional tool for researchers for the control of
disease causing genes and theoretical treatments of inherited diseases in the future. However
siRNA can only be used once the target mRNA sequence is known. (Sioud, 2004) However due to
the Human Genome Project, a large portion of the target genes have been sequenced allowing
SiRNA to become more practical.
The siRNA molecule is the product of the RNA interference(RNAi) pathway. The starting
molecule in the pathway is a long triggering double stranded RNA (dsRNA). The dsRNA is
formed from either an RNAi molecule inserted into the cell or a siRNA which complexes with a
specific strand of messenger RNA

Discipleship In Jesus
Discipleship
Teachers around the time when Jesus lived thought that learning was such that the people who
wanted to learn should come to them to be taught. But Jesus felt differently and rather than
waiting for people to come to him, he went out to find them and then chose them to be his
followers. He called them disciples and this word means one who learns. But Jesus chose his
disciples carefully as we are told in Mark 1:16 20 and also in Mark 3:13 19. In the first passage,
Jesus appoints his first four disciples, Simon, Andrew, James and John. Jesus said to them Come,
follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Mark 1:17) In Mark 2:13 17, Jesus calls up the

They have to rely on other people and as it is said in Morley s passage on discipleship, For they
set out with nothing but the word of God in their hearts.
When Jesus tells the disciples about the cost of discipleship (Mark 8:27 33) he means that they
should be prepared to put God and his commandments first before anything else, and they must
be prepared to suffer for their beliefs. Jesus told them that the most important commandment is
Love God and your neighbour as yourself, (Exodus 20: 3 17) and many disciples throughout the
ages have made many sacrifices to try and put this teaching into practise. When Jesus said to
take up the cross, we can assume that because we all have a cross to bear, we should take up our
vocation, and that means for us to follow Jesus regardless of the sacrifices we have to make.
When we are told we should follow him, it means that we should travel down the same road as
Jesus and suffer the many trials of being a disciple.
But, in Mark 10:29 31 we are told about the rewards of discipleship and the strange reward they
receive for their suffering. Jesus says this to the disciples after he tells them the story of the Rich
Young Man.
In this passage, the rich young man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells
him that he must give up his wealth, but the man is unable to do so. The

Gst Reform Proposal Essay

Background:
Treasurer,
Despite Paul Keating expressing support for a consumption tax in 1985, the GST did not gain
serious political traction until it formed the centrepiece of the Fightback! platform championed by
Liberal opposition leader John Hewson. The difficulties of explaining the nuances of a goods and

commentators considered to be an unlosable election (Eccleston 2013).

households (Congressional Budget Office 1992, p. 75). A survey of low to middle income

Eye In The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe
Eyes have been said to be the windows to the soul, by looking into them you can get a sense of who
this person is. Edgar Allan Poe uses one eye to not only describe one person but two, in his story
The Tell Tale Heart the narrator sees the eye and it is all he can focus on. The eye is no longer a
part of the old man but the eyeis the old man. This eye represents evil and hatred and every time
the narrator sees it the sight of it enrages him more. And that eye and that eye alone representing
evil to the narrator sealed the old man s fate. For if it not for that eye that old man might have
never been murdered.
From the first description of the eye we already get an unflattering picture, One of his eyes
resembled that of a vulture (Poe 1) He uses the term vulture a bird that feeds on the remains of
dead animals. Why would Poe use this bird to describe this man s eye? He picks a bird associated
with death showing a precursor of things to come perhaps. Or the narrator could have felt
threatened by the old man and that s why he compared him to the vulture s eye. Either why it starts

The Controversy Of Indian Mascots Essay
The controversy of Indian mascots is a widespread issue seen across the U.S.;is it racist , or is it
justified? From different viewpoints from many people the answers vary from group to group.I
believe it is not racist and believe that it is honoring. Natives should have the final say, but
regular americans still step in and want a say in the whole issue. The Indian mascot has been
used all across the U.S. ranging from elementary schools all the way to college and professional
sports teams. In fact Over 2,128 other teams use indian referenced team names not just
professional .(Munguia, Hayley)Ranging from many racial terms to regular tribe names. The
main focus of the controversy is focused on the professional sports team the Washington
Redskins. Many people see this team as racist and degrading to Indians. Some say it is similar to
the racial slur n***** to African Americans. I believe the Redskins, may be politically incorrect
representation of the Indians but not all indian mascots are racist or wrong. Indian mascots bring
history, power, cultural, education and strong images of Indians to Native Americans and all
American people. . Coming from a town named after the shoshone tribes old Cheif Pocatello, and
living near a Indian reservation, my town has a deep background and history of Indians. My town
of Pocatello honors the Shoshone tribe that is close by:building a tribute of Cheif Pocatello,
naming a town after him, building a replica of the old fort of the tribe,

A Brief Note On Disasters, Vulnerability And Risk
SUBMITTED TO: DR. JANKI ANDHARIA
SUBMITTED BY: PARTHA DAS
ENROLLMENT: M2015DM040
COURSE: MA/MSC IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT (2015 17)
PAPER: MDM2 Disasters, Vulnerability and Risk
Introduction:
Disaster has become the most emerging topic of recent times. But managing them totally is still not
being possible even by the developed countries. Different scholars defined the term differently. A
disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread
human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the
affected community or society to cope using its own resources. In contemporary academia,
disasters are seen as the consequence of inappropriately managed risk. These risks are the product
of a combination of both hazard/s and vulnerability. Hazards that strike in areas with low
vulnerability will never become disasters, as is the case in uninhabited regions. Developing
countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits more than 95 percent of all deaths caused
by hazards occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural hazards are 20 times greater
(as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries. Disasters are
again classified among categories like Natural Disaster and Man Made Disaster. A natural hazard
is a natural process or phenomenon that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts,
property damage, loss of livelihoods and

Essay on Evaluation of the Marketing Strategy of iPod
Evaluation of the Marketing Strategy of iPod
The product I have chosen to do my investigation on is the iPod with Video . I have chosen to do
this product as I know it reasonably well and have had a couple of iPod s since the release date in
2001. It is an extremely popular product worldwide not just because of its advanced technology,
but because it has become a fashion statement. I m sure its success will continue to increase and
that is why I have chosen it.
To continue with my investigation I will need to collect various information which, will help me
make final recommendations to the company. I will be using the two general types of research,
primary and secondary.

Other companies had released hard drive based music players but none of them compared to the
iPod. It was unique with its glistening white look and white ear buds. iPod almost wasn t released
by Apple as the creator, Tony Fadell, had offered the idea to Phillips and RealNetworks before
Apple.
One month after the domestic launch of iPod, it was launched in Europe followed by a series of
peripherals. Several companies were selling charging adapters, FM broadcasters and a range of
cases. By the end of 2001 Apple had sold approximately 125,000 iPod s.
In March 2002, a new 10 GB version of the iPod was released. Along with the new iPod came
software updates including several bug fixes and a new equalizer.
3 months later, in July 2002, a new 20 GB version was released with a major price cut of the 5 and
10 GB iPod. Many new features were added to the software. Also a change was made to the
hardware, where instead of a scroll wheel it was a touch sensitive click wheel.
A while later Apple released the iPod mini, a colourful little device that stored 1000 songs. It easily
was better than any other MP3 on the market at that time and everyone had to have one.
Next came the shuffle, a chewing gum packet sized iPod. This was the first without a screen on
click wheel.
Then the iPod Photo was released. An iPod with a huge memory, colour screen, which could store
both thousands of

Rumination, Hope and Depression
Depression is one of the most common mental health problems encountered by adult men and
women (Kessler, Chiu, Demler, Walters, 2005; World Health Organisation [WHO], 2009).
Affecting approximately 121 million individuals worldwide, depression is within the top five
leading causes of disease and disability (WHO, 2009). Andrade et al. (2003) indicated that the
prevalence of depression among adults worldwide ranged between 1.2% and 10% among 10
different countries, with seven of the ten countries clustered between the ranges of 3.5% to 5.9%.
Within Australia, 12 month prevalence rates for adults (16 85 years) for a depressive episode was
4.4% and for dysthymia was 1.3%, with depressive disorders accounting for 20.4% of all mental
health... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those that do not meet diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders but have subthreshold
depression can still experience considerable psychological suffering (Cuijpers, de Graaf, van
Dorsselaer, 2004; Rapaport et al., 2002), and harmful implications for quality of life (Goldney,
Fisher, Grande, Taylor 2004; Gotlib, Lewinsohn, Seeley, 1995).
Subthreshold depression has been characterised as the presence of depressive symptoms occurring
in individuals who do not meet diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder or Dysthymic
Disorder (APA, 2000; Cuijpers Smit, 2004; Kessler, Zhao, Blazer, Swartz, 1997; Judd, Rapaport,
Paulus, Brown, 1994). Subthreshold depression can be defined as scoring above cut off scores on
self rating depression scales or meeting DSM IV TR criteria for Minor Depression (Cuijpers Smit,
2004). Symptoms of subthreshold depression can impact on an individual s emotions (dysphoria
and guilt), cognitions (worry, self criticism, self blame), behaviours (withdrawal from social
functioning, anhedonia) and physical wellbeing (lethargy, changes in weight) (APA, 2000).

  • 2. Persuasive Essay On Warriors DonT Cry A personal story of discrimination, dedication, and salvation. Warriors Don t Cry is a gritty, impassioned memoir written by Melba Pattillo Beals. The memoir deals with Melba s childhood as she experiences racism and discrimination first hand. Some segments of this book may be considered inappropriate for some readers. There is controversy surrounding whether or not the book is appropriate for school students, specifically tenth graders. I believe that Warriors Don t Cry is appropriate for tenth graders to read. This book is appropriate because it shows today s youth how different society was just few decades ago, and how long and difficult it was to get to where we are today. It is also an important reminder to keep striving for equality in our society today. Finally, this book shows how far dedication, determination, and sacrifice can actually go. The first reason why Warriors Don t Cry is appropriate for tenth graders is because the book shows how different society was not to long ago. Today, students in the United States go to school, sit down, and do work. However, in the 1950s, it may not have been so simple. As seen in Warriors Don t Cry, integration in Central High School in Little Rock, Arizona was not friendly. The group of African American students that was integrated, called the Little Rock Nine, had it very rough. The white students would torment them, discriminate them, and physically harm them every day, just because of their skin color. Central High School ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Violent Media Is Good For Kids By Gerard Jones The essay Violent Media is Good for Kids by Gerard Jones was published by the New York Times in 2000. Jones was a well known author both in fiction and nonfiction and mainly focused on comic books. Jones argues that the violent behaviors depicted in comic books can be beneficial because they can help children overcome their fears. Jones incorrectly assumes that all children are the same and although a comic book may help one child, other children may become emotionally scarred by them. Jones focuses on three stories involving himself, his son, and a young lady by the name of Emily. In paragraph three, Jones tells us how his mother grew up in a violent era, not wanting her son to be exposed to such conduct. Until one day a student of hers enlightened her on the benefits a comic book can have on a child. The Hulk allowed for Jones to fantasize himself as being all powerful, fearless, and confident in his own skin. Also in compassion to Jones, in paragraph six, Jones son had a similar encounter but with the comic book Tarzan . Jones son was faced with the peer pressure of climbing a tree that his friend previously climbed. With his son being fearful, Jones knew that by allowing his son to become fixated on the comic of Tarzan would allow for him to put his fear of aside and climb the tree . Lastly, Jones adds in paragraph twelve, the importance of Emily, a playground bully who with the help of comic books could control her violent outbursts. Throughout Jones essay, he does a diligent job of providing valid and reliable evidence, but in paragraph twelve and thirteen when he tells the story of Emily is looked at as the turning point of his essay for most readers. Emily was known at school for expressing violent behaviors and depiction violent scenes from comicsand TV shows. Most mothers would pull Emily s mother aside and express their concerns and worries for the safety of the other kids who played around her. Emily s mother sought Jones help, fearful that her child might not be able to differentiate between realities and play time. • 6. Language In Rabbit Proof Fence Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated properly. Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australias history. Many aboriginal children didn t want to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof Fence has been created from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has created many representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual elements and the audio components. The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs, Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that they were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she didn t want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had no authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary. It was used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. As CEO she must juggle the interests of her stakeholders and make decisions that benefit the company. It can prove to be a difficult task as certain stakeholders hold more power and have more influence when it comes to making these decisions. In this paper I will be using stakeholder theory to discuss how Anglo American s stakeholders influence Carroll s decision. Carroll is well aware of the dangers her employees face, however she must decide whether it is in her best interest to increase safetyor not. While increasing safety measures may make the company look better, it will come at great costs. Although Cynthia Carroll is facing some opposition from it s the South African government and its employees, when taking in the interests of all the company s stakeholders it is clear that she must keep the mines up and running without taking more safety precautions. • 27. Summary Of Daniel James Brown s The Boys In The Boat I recently read Daniel James Brown s riveting, captivating, and inspiring nonfiction story The Boys in the Boat. The author s message that was conveyed throughout the book was that triumph can be achieved against the greatest of odds, and that nothing is impossible when matched with the power of hard work and persistence. The Boys in the Boat is the story of the rowingcrew of the University of Washington and their incredible journey from a somber beginning in the Great Depression struck city of Seattle to victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The story has a great focus on one specific member of the team, Joe Rantz, and his own personal struggles, from losing his one and only mother, to being virtually abandoned and left to live on his own at a very young age. It also shines light on the never ending adversity the University of Washington crew had to overcome as a whole. Both of these concepts, along with a lot more, greatly contribute to the powerful message that was conveyed by the author.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He tried to use dreary and desolate words to describe the city of Seattle and its state during the Great Depression to capture the mood of how hopeless everyone had felt at the time, as well as how hard the boys physically had to work to earn just a little bit of money. This was a great way for the author to express his message in my opinion, because it showed just how difficult the conditions were for the boys from a very early stage in the book, and made their eventual success at the Olympics much more triumphant. By showing where the boys had started in their journey, with hard work to get through the Great Depression, the author truly emphasized his message that anything can be achieved, no matter how difficult it may ... This class of diseases causes the apoptosis of neurons and surrounding cells. The outcome for the sufferers has often been death. However there is promising developments in gene therapy, including SiRNA therapy in the treatment of these diseases. Small Interfering RNA (SiRNA) was discovered by Andrew Fire and Craig Mello, receiving the Nobel Prize in 2006 for their work. (Kaur et al, 2012) Typically SiRNA are between 21 and 23 RNA nucleotides in length. SiRNA has the ability to cause the inactivity of a genes expression in somatic mammalian cells; has proven to be an exceptional tool for researchers for the control of disease causing genes and theoretical treatments of inherited diseases in the future. However siRNA can only be used once the target mRNA sequence is known. (Sioud, 2004) However due to the Human Genome Project, a large portion of the target genes have been sequenced allowing SiRNA to become more practical. The siRNA molecule is the product of the RNA interference(RNAi) pathway. The starting molecule in the pathway is a long triggering double stranded RNA (dsRNA). The dsRNA is formed from either an RNAi molecule inserted into the cell or a siRNA which complexes with a specific strand of messenger RNA ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jesus told them that the most important commandment is Love God and your neighbour as yourself, (Exodus 20: 3 17) and many disciples throughout the ages have made many sacrifices to try and put this teaching into practise. When Jesus said to take up the cross, we can assume that because we all have a cross to bear, we should take up our vocation, and that means for us to follow Jesus regardless of the sacrifices we have to make. When we are told we should follow him, it means that we should travel down the same road as Jesus and suffer the many trials of being a disciple. But, in Mark 10:29 31 we are told about the rewards of discipleship and the strange reward they receive for their suffering. And that eye and that eye alone representing evil to the narrator sealed the old man s fate. For if it not for that eye that old man might have never been murdered. From the first description of the eye we already get an unflattering picture, One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture (Poe 1) He uses the term vulture a bird that feeds on the remains of dead animals. Why would Poe use this bird to describe this man s eye? He picks a bird associated with death showing a precursor of things to come perhaps. But managing them totally is still not being possible even by the developed countries. Different scholars defined the term differently. A disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. In contemporary academia, disasters are seen as the consequence of inappropriately managed risk. These risks are the product of a combination of both hazard/s and vulnerability. Hazards that strike in areas with low vulnerability will never become disasters, as is the case in uninhabited regions. Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits more than 95 percent of all deaths caused by hazards occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural hazards are 20 times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries. Disasters are again classified among categories like Natural Disaster and Man Made Disaster.
