Workplace Violence:
"Why Prevention is NOT Enough!"
The Missing Elements In Most Plans
Presented by:
Jeffrey M. Miller SPS, DTI
WCI Consulting
What If I Told You…?
 I DON’T care about your company’s “Zero
Tolerance” policy.
 I DON’T care about your Punitive Action
(punishment) policy and procedures.
What If I Told You…?
And…
 I DON’T care about your company’s “Banned
Weapons on Site” policy.
Well… actually… I do…
But…
NOT for the reasons you probably think!
Why Don’t I Care?
 I DON’T care because in the moment your
assailant chooses to attack (and perhaps for
quite a while leading up to the act)…
 He or she DOESN’T care about those things.
And, when it comes to your “Banned Weapons on
Site” list…
They’re COUNTING on it!

How Many Have To Be Injured
Or Killed for Things to Change?
 The fact is that the
prevention and
administrative reporting
policies and procedures
which make up most
workplace violence plans
including yours - cannot
keep you safe "during" a
violent, physical attack!
How Many Have To Be Injured
Or Killed for Things to Change?
 The cost resulting from a
single act of workplace
violence within your
company reaches far
beyond the loss of money,
time, and people.
 The effects from liability
and negative news
coverage on your
reputation can be far
greater!
Overview
Do YOU Know Your True Risks of
Workplace Violence?

Today’s Training Objectives
Understanding the Problem
Identify What's Missing
Develop an EFFECTIVE Solution
What's Wrong With Most Workplace Violence
Plans, Policies, and Procedures?
 Misguided thinking on the part of
managers, administrators, etc.
– 2 Important Definitions:
 Self-defense
 Fighting
What's Wrong With Most Workplace Violence
Plans, Policies, and Procedures?
 Misguided thinking on the part of
managers, administrators, etc.
– 2 Important Definitions:
 Self-defense
 Fighting
To most execs opposed to training…
“They’re both
the SAME!
“Self-Defense
=
Fighting”
The REALITY:
 Self Defense
"The action or actions taken to De-escalate,
Neutralize, Escape from, or survive a
dangerous situation."
 2 or more “combatants,” but at least one of them…
…DOESN’T WANT TO BE THERE!
The REALITY:
 Fighting
"A Contest between 2 or more people - all
trying to achieve the same goal."
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about armies; two guys
fighting over a girl in a bar on Saturday night…
…or you arguing with your spouse over what the make,
model, and color of a new car will be!
The REALITY:
 Not just different in concept or wording
 Completely different mentalities &
objectives on the part of the combatants!
While "self defense" may require the use of
some of the same physical skills seen in any
fight...
The REALITY:
...the REASON you would be using these
skills is very different!
The REALITY:
And, contrary to popular belief…
…there is MUCH more to effective,
liability-conscious self-defense, than
merely what many call, “karate-moves.”
(More on this in a few moments…)
According to the U. S. Department of
Homeland Security…
The New Terrorism!
Workplace Violence is...
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Incorrect Beliefs About Attackers, Triggers, etc.
 Ignorance of the 5 Attacker / Situation Types (more about this in a
minute)
 Lack of understanding about the 3 elements required for an event
to occur, and…
 No prior training or experience in attacker methodologies and
what’s needed to actively and effectively respond to, and deal with
them.
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Incorrect Beliefs About Attackers, Triggers, etc.
 Most plans are designed to be 'Passive‘
 Lead by the fear that training will create an aggression problem
rather than confidence or, worse yet…
 The belief that employment contracts, “Zero-Tolerance”
statements, and other devices based on “rational thinking”…
…will stop an irrational person from lashing out!
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Belief that there is only 1 attacker type
 Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'
 Decision-making focused on ‘Denial’
 The belief that; “That won’t, or can’t, happen here.”
 “Employees signed an agreement prohibiting violence, so their
acting otherwise is unthinkable” (a corporate lawyer actual said
this to me. Unless your policy is thick enough to stop a bullet, or
the person saying it is willing to bet his or her life on it…
…DO NOT buy into this flawed logic!
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Belief that there is only 1 attacker type
 Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'
 Decision-making focused on 'Denial'
 Failure to act on clear warning signs
 Ignoring anger issues; non-reporting of physical assaults, verbal
threats and intimidations; and hoping that nothing will happen
even though red flags exist!
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Belief that there is only 1 attacker type
 Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'
 Decision-making focused on 'Denial'
 Failure to act on clear warning signs
…and…
5 Problems with the Common Approach
That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:
 Policies, Procedures, and Training (if any) are
created by individual managers or teams with…
NO actual experience in handling violence!
And often…
Policies are nothing more than borrowed, “fill-in-the-
blank” templates, which keep the same ignorance going!
The Reality of Workplace Violence Is...
 13 - 14 people are murdered on the job
each week from an act of violence in the
workplace (the number 1 cause of work-related death for women &
managers, 2nd for men!)
 38,500 are assaulted, raped, robbed, or
otherwise attacked on the job in the U.S…
... every week!
Your Company's Needs Analysis Must
Cover and Properly Address:
 5 Attacker-types / Situations
 Employee-initiated
 Former employees
 Guests/customers
 Domestic violence-related
 Off-site attacks
The “Missing Link"
There is a Missing Element in Most
Workplace Violence Plans
The " Missing Link "
Most workplace violence plans do not include
the necessary elements to allow the plan to be
effective when it is needed most!
The " Missing Link "
There are virtually no training programs,
policies, or procedures in place to help employees
effectively deal with the operative word in the
name of the plan...
...Violence!
A Complete Plan According to OSHA
The typical workplace violence plan is missing
4 critical pieces that are included in the OSHA
section on this subject:
 Attack evasion
 Assault avoidance
 Personal Safety
 Self-defense
Worse Yet…!
70% of companies have NO workplace violence policy in
place whatsoever!
Of those that do…
Less than 3% have those 4 types of training implemented
to fit the definition of, what OSHA defines as…
“a COMPLETE workplace violence plan!”
8-Phase Strategic Defensive Response
& Training Model
General Awareness
Situational Awareness
Escaping to Safety
Distraction Tactics (De-escalation 1)
Dissuasion Tactics (De-escalation 2)
Physical Self Defense
Post-incident Trauma Recovery
Legal / Procedural / PR Considerations
This outline simultaneously
outlines the 8 different
strategic phases we’ve
identified through which a
threat or attack can
progress.
Each phase has strategic
options available to you for
your defense and safety.
The outline then serves as
an outline for effective
training and response to
stop the threat / danger at
that point, and before it can
escalate to the next, more
dangerous phase.
Final Questions
 What does your company already have in place?
 How does your security operations control property
access, building access, guest movement, identify and
prevent access by prohibited individuals, etc?
 What is the biggest hindrance to getting this in place in
your company right now?
 When was your last security risk/threat assessment (the
core of all other activities) conducted?
REMEMBER…
 The nature of Violence is that
it’s RANDOM!
- You never know when it
will happen, where, or what
form it will take.
 You must take action
BEFORE your company’s
reputation, liability, or people
are damaged (or killed) by an
act of violence!

know where to begin.
That's why we're here. We specialize in tailoring your
company's workplace violence prevention, security, and
training programs to your most probable threat(s), and insure
that all pieces of the system are not only effective, but ALSO...

Workplace Violence Awareness Training That Every CEO, CFO and HR Manager Needs to See!

  • 1. Workplace Violence: "Why Prevention is NOT Enough!" The Missing Elements In Most Plans Presented by: Jeffrey M. Miller SPS, DTI WCI Consulting
  • 2. What If I Told You…?  I DON’T care about your company’s “Zero Tolerance” policy.  I DON’T care about your Punitive Action (punishment) policy and procedures.
  • 3. What If I Told You…? And…  I DON’T care about your company’s “Banned Weapons on Site” policy. Well… actually… I do…
  • 4. But… NOT for the reasons you probably think!
  • 5. Why Don’t I Care?  I DON’T care because in the moment your assailant chooses to attack (and perhaps for quite a while leading up to the act)…  He or she DOESN’T care about those things. And, when it comes to your “Banned Weapons on Site” list…
  • 6. They’re COUNTING on it! www.attackproofmycompany.com/
  • 7. How Many Have To Be Injured Or Killed for Things to Change?  The fact is that the prevention and administrative reporting policies and procedures which make up most workplace violence plans including yours - cannot keep you safe "during" a violent, physical attack!
  • 8. How Many Have To Be Injured Or Killed for Things to Change?  The cost resulting from a single act of workplace violence within your company reaches far beyond the loss of money, time, and people.  The effects from liability and negative news coverage on your reputation can be far greater!
  • 9. Overview Do YOU Know Your True Risks of Workplace Violence? www.attackproofmycompany.com/
  • 10. Today’s Training Objectives Understanding the Problem Identify What's Missing Develop an EFFECTIVE Solution
  • 11. What's Wrong With Most Workplace Violence Plans, Policies, and Procedures?  Misguided thinking on the part of managers, administrators, etc. – 2 Important Definitions:  Self-defense  Fighting
  • 12. What's Wrong With Most Workplace Violence Plans, Policies, and Procedures?  Misguided thinking on the part of managers, administrators, etc. – 2 Important Definitions:  Self-defense  Fighting To most execs opposed to training… “They’re both the SAME! “Self-Defense = Fighting”
  • 13. The REALITY:  Self Defense "The action or actions taken to De-escalate, Neutralize, Escape from, or survive a dangerous situation."  2 or more “combatants,” but at least one of them… …DOESN’T WANT TO BE THERE!
  • 14. The REALITY:  Fighting "A Contest between 2 or more people - all trying to achieve the same goal." It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about armies; two guys fighting over a girl in a bar on Saturday night… …or you arguing with your spouse over what the make, model, and color of a new car will be!
  • 15. The REALITY:  Not just different in concept or wording  Completely different mentalities & objectives on the part of the combatants! While "self defense" may require the use of some of the same physical skills seen in any fight...
  • 16. The REALITY: ...the REASON you would be using these skills is very different!
  • 17. The REALITY: And, contrary to popular belief… …there is MUCH more to effective, liability-conscious self-defense, than merely what many call, “karate-moves.” (More on this in a few moments…)
  • 18. According to the U. S. Department of Homeland Security… The New Terrorism! Workplace Violence is...
  • 19. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Incorrect Beliefs About Attackers, Triggers, etc.  Ignorance of the 5 Attacker / Situation Types (more about this in a minute)  Lack of understanding about the 3 elements required for an event to occur, and…  No prior training or experience in attacker methodologies and what’s needed to actively and effectively respond to, and deal with them.
  • 20. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Incorrect Beliefs About Attackers, Triggers, etc.  Most plans are designed to be 'Passive‘  Lead by the fear that training will create an aggression problem rather than confidence or, worse yet…  The belief that employment contracts, “Zero-Tolerance” statements, and other devices based on “rational thinking”… …will stop an irrational person from lashing out!
  • 21. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Belief that there is only 1 attacker type  Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'  Decision-making focused on ‘Denial’  The belief that; “That won’t, or can’t, happen here.”  “Employees signed an agreement prohibiting violence, so their acting otherwise is unthinkable” (a corporate lawyer actual said this to me. Unless your policy is thick enough to stop a bullet, or the person saying it is willing to bet his or her life on it… …DO NOT buy into this flawed logic!
  • 22. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Belief that there is only 1 attacker type  Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'  Decision-making focused on 'Denial'  Failure to act on clear warning signs  Ignoring anger issues; non-reporting of physical assaults, verbal threats and intimidations; and hoping that nothing will happen even though red flags exist!
  • 23. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Belief that there is only 1 attacker type  Most plans are designed to be 'Passive'  Decision-making focused on 'Denial'  Failure to act on clear warning signs …and…
  • 24. 5 Problems with the Common Approach That Lead to Failure, Injuries & Deaths:  Policies, Procedures, and Training (if any) are created by individual managers or teams with… NO actual experience in handling violence! And often… Policies are nothing more than borrowed, “fill-in-the- blank” templates, which keep the same ignorance going!
  • 25. The Reality of Workplace Violence Is...  13 - 14 people are murdered on the job each week from an act of violence in the workplace (the number 1 cause of work-related death for women & managers, 2nd for men!)  38,500 are assaulted, raped, robbed, or otherwise attacked on the job in the U.S… ... every week!
  • 26. Your Company's Needs Analysis Must Cover and Properly Address:  5 Attacker-types / Situations  Employee-initiated  Former employees  Guests/customers  Domestic violence-related  Off-site attacks
  • 27. The “Missing Link" There is a Missing Element in Most Workplace Violence Plans
  • 28. The " Missing Link " Most workplace violence plans do not include the necessary elements to allow the plan to be effective when it is needed most!
  • 29. The " Missing Link " There are virtually no training programs, policies, or procedures in place to help employees effectively deal with the operative word in the name of the plan... ...Violence!
  • 30. A Complete Plan According to OSHA The typical workplace violence plan is missing 4 critical pieces that are included in the OSHA section on this subject:  Attack evasion  Assault avoidance  Personal Safety  Self-defense
  • 31. Worse Yet…! 70% of companies have NO workplace violence policy in place whatsoever! Of those that do… Less than 3% have those 4 types of training implemented to fit the definition of, what OSHA defines as… “a COMPLETE workplace violence plan!”
  • 32. 8-Phase Strategic Defensive Response & Training Model General Awareness Situational Awareness Escaping to Safety Distraction Tactics (De-escalation 1) Dissuasion Tactics (De-escalation 2) Physical Self Defense Post-incident Trauma Recovery Legal / Procedural / PR Considerations This outline simultaneously outlines the 8 different strategic phases we’ve identified through which a threat or attack can progress. Each phase has strategic options available to you for your defense and safety. The outline then serves as an outline for effective training and response to stop the threat / danger at that point, and before it can escalate to the next, more dangerous phase.
  • 33. Final Questions  What does your company already have in place?  How does your security operations control property access, building access, guest movement, identify and prevent access by prohibited individuals, etc?  What is the biggest hindrance to getting this in place in your company right now?  When was your last security risk/threat assessment (the core of all other activities) conducted?
  • 34. REMEMBER…  The nature of Violence is that it’s RANDOM! - You never know when it will happen, where, or what form it will take.  You must take action BEFORE your company’s reputation, liability, or people are damaged (or killed) by an act of violence!
