  3. identification -how to identify an ergonomic risk factor -you can’t address it if you don’t know where it is hiding dynamic work environment -the ever changing work place.. desk top, lap top 1 to 3 monitors, do you sit , do you stand worker demographic -aging workforce vs millennial and gen y -all bring habits to the table their habits contribute to risk factors that you inherit senior management buy in no awareness to the overall impact that ergonomic engagement can have on their bottom line engagement and employee buy in how to educate a busy employee about risk factors that they have control over and empower them to make positive changes budget where do find a budget for something that never had a line item cost to claim how to track and quantify msd cases you have addressed not just ones that that lead to workers comp.. how about the ones you prevented before they made it to claim. responsibility: whose job is it to deal with ergo… no body actually wants it. accountability who is??? employer? employee?
  4. ERGONOMICS JUST DOESN’T’ SEEM TO FIT IN.. WE HAVENT FIGURED OUT WHAT DEPARTMENT IT FALLS UNDER MEDICAL, FACILITIES, WELLNESS. BUSINESS JUST DIDN’T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE RISING COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ERGONOMIC ISSUES IN THEIR OVERALL BUSINESS PLANS. NO ONE EVER THOUGTH.. “WHO WOULD GET HURT JUST “SITTING AND TYPING ALL DAY”
  5. MY ACRONYM FOR HELPING YOU REDUCE MSD CLAIMS. MEET YOUR NEW EMPLOYER.. MS. ERGONOMIC HER APPROACH.. SHE DOES NOT WORK WITH A SPECIFIC DEPARTMENT SHE HAS AN “AREA” ALL TO HERSELF SHE IS CONFIDENT IF HER AREA IS BUILT SHE CAN ADDRESS MOST OF YOUR OBSTACLES HER MISSION: A SOLID APPROACH TO ENGAGEMENT BUILDS AWARENESS, RESPONSIBILITY, EDUCATION AND ACCOUNTABILTY
  6. AN ANALOGY LETS LOOK AT A PLAYGROUND LOOKS LIKE FUN.. BUT DANGER CAN LURK JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE SO OUR PARENTS MADE US AWARE OF POTENTIAL ACTIONS THE COULD HURT US WE WERE GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILTIY TO PLAY SAFELY WE WERE EDUCATED ON HOW TO DO THAT FOR THE MOST PART WE WERE ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR ACTIONS AND WHEN WE WEREN’T OUR INJURY WERE MINOR. AN EXCEPTION .. THOSE FEW WHO TOOK A RISK, OR WERE NOT EDUCATED OR MADE AWARE
  7. THAT WAS ALWAYS THE KID WITH THE BROKEN ARM
  8. SO HERE IS THE ADULT PLAYGROUND WITH ALL THE DEVICES WE GET TO PLAY WITH FOR HOURS UPON HOURS.. ONE BIG EXCEPTION WE DON’T MOVE IN OUR PLAY GROUND… I IT IS A SET UP FOR INJURY… WHY???? WE DIDN’T GET THE GROUND RULES WE WEREN’T TOLD TO BE AWARE OF THE RISKS OF PLAYING WITH OUR TOOLS SO WE CAN’T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IF NO ONE CAN TAKES RESPONSIBILTY WHO CAN EDUCATE IF WE HAVEN’T EDUCATED HOW CAN WE EXPECT THEM TO BE ACCOUNTABLE. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE I FACE EVERYDAY IS HELPING MY CLIENTS FACE THE OBSTACLE COURSE CLEAR THE CLUTTER AND START BUILDING A CREATIVE AREA TO WORK IN AND PLAY IN.
  9. Understanding the dynamic work environment and the effect it has on the Musculoskeletal System in most definitely number one hurdle. WE ARE ON 24/ 7 The second is just getting people to listen to common sense about their dynamic lives. GET UP AN MOVE!!! If we sit 75% of our day or more, In compromised postures that use small muscle groups repetitively, Leave work after 10 hours at a desk Go home and repeat on our sofa’s and devices
  10. Add to that the 3rd hurdle. Millennial and Gen Y employee in your current employment. They often have pre-existing MSD”s Due to postured they have been taught and allowed to adopt because of all the devices they have been introduced that have lead to sedentary behavior. The postures are now structurally inherent and are mostly comprised of high risk postures.
  11. The 4th Challenge is helping employers Embrace TOTAL WORKER HEATLH. Something all company’s should be working toward to lessen MSD claims, and increase awareness about balanced lifestyles However for most employers the foundation of your TOTAL WORKER HEALTH STRUCTURE. It’s as weak as your employee’s CORE MUSCLE STRENGHT
  12. From a business standpoint, it may look like your it is flowing like a beautiful current from above…
  13. You are not often aware of what is lurking around the next bend That TURBULENCE if not fully prepared.. Is your next MSD CLAIM The one adding to the 54 Billion that is impacting your bottom line
  14. It is this turbulence that causes most employers To have REACTIVE responses In RESPONSE to your EMPLOYEE’S REACTIVE Response to PAIN Not leaving room for a Proactive approach

I call it the 80 / 20 rule: If your company takes 80% responsibility your program is most likely reactive The AREA surrounding your ergonomic ENGAGEMENT The foundation to the model we have been examining Has some STRUCTURAL IMBALANCESS Both LITERALLY and FIGURATIVELY This imbalance is allowing physical risks to escalate With both employer and employee ignoring the early warning signs and symptoms of an MSD UNTIL we have to FIX IT.. Remember an little drip unattended too can cause a flood.
  16. In the 80/20 rule Week foundation/ engagement/ no AREA has been created for ergonomics You begin to filter up the ladder to manage injury. Risk is up and so are costs associated.

  18. We all understand the direct cost associated with the treatment of MSD’s However that cost escalates when you add in the indirect cost. Which can be up to 5X greater then the direct cost Lets take a look

  20. True case study of employees who have self reported and corrected by survey. Injury's…. Back, wrists elbows… approx. 100 to 150 thousand per case averaging in direct and indirect costs In this case proactive measures were taken.. Either a new chair, foot rest, an ergo evaluation, a soft edge.. Etc. As you can see the total cost spent on 8 employee’s is a little over $3000.00 VS the potential costs associated with not have an aware, responsible , educated and accountable employee… $800.000!!
  21. My biggest challenge overall, is when I mention the words Ergonomics and MSD’s is trying to pull the ostrich out of the sand. And getting someone to pay attention to what happens when I flip the model.
  22. I am hoping a proactive approach.. Or the 20/ 80 concept is starting to resonate. That moving toward a 20/ 80 model makes good $$ sense and good physical health sense. That investing in engagement and building an AREA around ergonomics will give you a strong foundation That empowering your employee’s to take 80% control over their work environment and their health This will offer you a road map zero injury. Leading to a happier more comfortable employee who is injury free.. And One who communicates sooner than later with you, and if need be the right medical professional if they are feeling discomfort that they cannot alleviate. Lessening the numbers of visits to PT’s or avoiding costly surgery because its too late. Which certainly will have a positive impact on your bottom line leading to a happier employer
