DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
SUBJECT : Metal Casting Technology
IV B.Tech II SEMESTER
VNRVJIET: ME : WIT & WIL 1
WHY AM I TEACHING METAL CASTING TECHNOLOGY?
(If metal casting is not used )
What if no
metal casting
is there
We are not able to
give definite shape
to a metal
And if there is no application and necessity then why
we should do so
No application can be
assigned to part
WHY AM I LEARNING METAL CASTING TECHNOLOGY?
Recognizing the processTo observe how the
machines and mechanical
elements are working
Identifying the parts
Making suitable pattern Perform castingMaking part drawings
WHAT AM I TEACHING
How to melt the metal How to pour the molten
metal in mould cavity
How to
How to make patterns
How to give proper finish
to the part
How to design gates and
risers
How to remove gates
and risers
WHAT AM I LEARNING
• Patterns: Types of patterns- Pattern Materials- Pattern, Allowances- Pattern
Layout, Pattern making.
Sands and their properties: Various sands- Testing of foundry sand: Strength
Permeability, Moisture Content.
• Moulding/Casting Methods: Green sand moulding, dry sand moulding, no
bake moulding, shell moulding, Investment casting- Permanent moulding, die
casting and Centrifugal casting, Rheocasting, Thixocasting and Squeeze casting.
• Gating Functions and Designs: Solidification Gates- their functions, design of
gating system- Risers- their functions design
• Melting Methods: Operation of crucible furnaces, Reverberatory furnaces,
Cupola, Rotary furnace-Core type and Coreless type, Induction furnaces, Arc
furnace
• Fettling and Inspections: Removal of gates and risers, Grinding, Shot blasting
and finishing, Inspection, Casting defects, Remedies.
