What's new with VMM
New Momentum with VMMPress recognizing the value of VMM!Tech Republic – “Microsoft strikes back with Virtual Machine Manager 2007”IDC Reports sums up the VMM storyBesides the additional feature development and heterogeneous support coming in VMM version 2, IDC expects the greatest value to come from the VMM integration with the broader System Center Suite, as this addresses pressing operational issues such as change, configuration, asset, and event management. These expanded capabilities enable IT organizations to attack VM sprawl from a life-cycle perspective.“Microsoft, for the first time in the company’s history, is positioning management as a centerpiece for differentiation and making a significant investment in management product execution and sales training for both direct (enterprise) and indirect small/midmarket channels prior to the release of the core technology (Viridian hypervisor)”

Editor's Notes

  • #17 TP: This is a comparison between Microsoft Windows and VMware pricing for both standard and enterprise implementations. As you can see, we have one price for both configurations. Vmware’s strategy is to charge for add ons for standard and to bundle these add ons into it’s enterprise edition (VI3) either of which is significantly higher than Microsoft’s price. VI3/ESX includes ESX Server, VMFS, VirtualCenter Agent, Virtual SMP, VMotion, VMware HA, VMware DRS, and Consolidated Backup.Windows Server EE and DC licenses are $2400 Open NL bandKey points: With Microsoft, many of those features are just included… out of the box.. no need for additional licensing and using our platform, requires NO retraining of the multiple IT groups VMware ESX comes at a significant premiumVMware’s pricing model is to charge for everything. ESX would require specialized knowledge from multiple teams (Windows, Storage, Linux)If the customer chooses to use VMware… they would still have to pay for System Center licensing if they want Configuration Manager, DPM, Operations Mgr.Does not include maintenance, support or hardware costs. Deploying ESX with no integration work will affect multiple groups today and require parallel infrastructures for existing VM plant, including training and ad-hoc code workMicrosoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 allows for increased density at a fraction of the cost of ESXRequires NO retraining of the multiple IT groups that look after and use the VM plantContinued hosting of VMs on the Windows platform makes it easier for global operations and engineering coverage of the product, unlike ESX which would require specialized knowledge from multiple teams (Windows, Storage, Linux)Using a Windows solution allows internal teams to productize VMs sooner and integrate the product offering into the distributions channels (i.e. MCM), enabling scale far beyond any one feature.Microsoft Pricing Notes:Virtual Server software available as free download Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition includes 4 free VMs
