Thomas Duncan, Director of the Sharon Public Library, contacted
us regarding a website redesign project for the library. He advised
the site was out of date, and users were struggling to find the
information they needed.
About the Project
Executive Summary
The project was agreed to and to be done pro-bono for the
institution. Two primary objectives were established to would help
guide the work:
1) Increase the speed at which users can access the information
they are looking for
2) Increase the success of users finding the information they
desire on the first attempt

Using the defined personas in milestone 2, critical key tasks were identified. Using key tasks, the sitemap was
reconfigured to make key tasks more accessible. By conducting remote user testing during milestones 5 & 7,
the initial sitemap and later wireframes were improved in a way the satisfied expectations and met the primary
objectives of the stakeholder. In the following slides, you will the design as well as the critical thinking behind
decisions.

To meet the needs of the Library, the project had to be executed
quickly. In order to accommodate the timeline, research and
design were completed and iterated on each week.
The project plan included these key milestones:
1. Review existing site organization and schemes
2. Conduct primary and secondary research to help ID personas
3. Develop a cross-matrix of key tasks and personas
4. Modernize the site map
5. Conduct Tree Testing on the proposed site map
6. Create revised wireframes
7. Utilize First Click Tests to ensure user success with wireframes
8. Compile a final report detailing comprehensive learnings and
recommendations

FOUNDATIONAL RESEARCH

ASSESSMENT Existing Site
Organization
The main organizational issue of the
current site is its use of deep
secondary navigation menus. With
some sections holding more than a
dozen sub-section topics, users not
only have to sort through an
undefined scheme, they also must
look through long lists of secondary
topics to find what they want.
Scheme
The current scheme of the Sharon
Public Library site is an amalgamous
mix of audience and task-oriented
labels, combined with chronological
ordering and metaphor-based labels.
Utilizing so many different methods
makes it difficult for users to
standardize their understanding of
the site. It disables a user from
establishing a mental model they can
rely on to help ground their thoughts,
actions,and language.
Other Design Thoughts
The current site is functional, but the
homepage is also chaotic. Embedded
widgets, random advertisements,
mixed fonts, squashed images, and
more make the page hard to navigate.
Additionally, not a single page on the
site has an SEO recognizable Title.
Images are missing Alt-text labels,
contrast within some images is poor,
and tab-based navigation is
impossible.
These issues will not be resolved in
this work, but are issues that should
nonetheless be taken into
consideration when developing its
replacement.
RESEARCH Methods
Interviews and Surveys
Based on the quick turnaround time for this project stage,
interviews and surveys with library practitioners and
patrons was conducted because direct commentary from
users is critical to understanding task-based scenarios.
Research yeilded many recurring tasks of library goers, as
well as personality and demographic characteristics that
helped flesh-out user personas. Full results in Appendix A.
Literary Review
To better understand the demographics of library users, we
consulted secondary research from reputable sources.
Studies from prior years help establish user groups we
should be targeting.
This data also helped round-out common tasks, as well as
provide context as to how libraries can be perceived by
different audiences. While not every piece of secondard
research was utilized, much of it led to a better
understanding and appreciation of library services, which
helped our own mental models throughout the project.

RESEARCH Task Findings
Interviews and Surveys Literary Review
Not universal, but still prevalent was the need for an online solution to pay
library fines.
4 - Fine Payments
The most common theme across our research indicates that the library website is
used primarily for checking media availability.
The second most common site task was reserving circulation media for later pickup,
or instant delivery via instant e-loan programs.
1 - Media Availability
2 - Media Reservations/Checkout
Most users, rather than conduct exploratory research page by page, prefer to utilize
site search to simplify that process.
3 – Site Search
Respondents also indicated a frequent desire to see what library programs and
events were available. This need manifested more heavily in user groups of parents
of younger children and older-empty nesters, especially those living alone.
5 - Library Programming & Events
A final recurring, but often forgotten need, was the ability access third-party
databases and resources through the library proxy.
6 - Utilize Library Access Databases/Services
There is a desire to accessing information about what rooms are available at the
library.
10 – Room Availability (ALA, 2017)
A frequent need of patrons is the need for many kinds of assistance from librarians
for all demographic segments..
A need provided as social infrastructure of a library, are individuals needing access
to tools to search and apply for jobs.
7 - Help From Librarians (ALA, 2019)
8 - Search & Apply for Jobs Online (Rainie, 2016)
Ensuring access to WIFI, even during closed hours, is becoming a critical
component of library communication.
9 – WIFI/Internet Connectivity (OCLC, 2018)
Technology availability is also a definite need of library patrons.
11 – Technology Access and Education (ALA, 2019)
These tasks form the foundation of navigation
design and labeling decisions that will make each of
them findable and usable.

The analysis indicates that Primary Personas,Sibyll and Miranda, are both consistent users of the

are part of a sub-domain, it is critical to ensure that finding the catalog and integrating item
search a priority.
Focus should be placed on Primary Research Tasks that can be redesigned before finally moving

A hybrid subjective scheme allows

TESTING ORGANIZATION & LABELING
Research Method: Tree Testing
What is Tree Testing?
To understand if the organizational scheme,
structure, and labeling works for users, we can test
them without any visual elements. A tree test
positions a user with a task and an outline of the site
navigation, logging the users clicks along the way
and tracking their final “nominations” for content
destinations.
Why Tree Testing?
Tree tests allow for click testing that shows how
efficient a user’s progress towards the right answer
for each task is. Both success and direct success is
measured for each user on each task, which can be
used for analysis to determine how efficient and
effective navigation for each key task is.

TREE TESTING, UNSUCCESSFUL TASKS
Research Summary
2 Where would you go to sign up for a
library card?
To optimize this task, the pie tree indicated
that users were equally split between the Your
Account and Library Resources pages, rather
than home. Thus, Sign-Up should be in both of
those locations, likely an entry for “How to get
a library card”.
4 Where would you go to find what physical
books are available?
This task fell just below the threshold, which can be
attributed to the usage of the label “Card Catalog”.
A follow-up question to the task ask if “Card
Catalog” was the appropriate label, and 32
responses indicated that “catalog” or “library
catalog” would be a better label – an easy
adjustment.
9 Where would you go if you had
problems getting an eBook to work?
In the pie tree 21 study participants went to
Library Resources looking for this information.
Those participants were split between How to…
and Ask a Librarian. Thus, an entry under the
how-to page should also link to the primary
instructions in the eLibrary navigation.

WIREFRAMES
The current site has no mechanism
for easily returning to the home page.
The function of the logo should
accommodate that.
Find Library Hours
This widget should populate with the
hours open each day. This keeps the
user on the site rather than leaving
our site to Google the information.
Return to Home
One of the most utilized information pieces,
the library phone number should remain
visible on all pages via the header.
Contact the Library – Phone
Catalog and Site Search
A critical need of users is the ability to quickly
search both the site, and the item catalog. Via
the implemented toggle, users can alternate
their search to the desired domain.
Header & Footer
Find Library Address
The library address should be
displayed on each page for convenient
access. Though less important, so it is
in the footer.
Find Library Social Media
Social media account links should be visible,
and icon-based for easy identification.
See a Simplified Sitemap
Users can’t always develop a mental
model of the site through drop down
menus, so a short-form sitemap will
help them orient themselves around
the organization.
Other Important Info and Links
Other critical but less utilized info is available
in the sub-footer for legal and SEO purposes.
Repeated items from header: Phone, Hours
See This Weeks Programs
Research showed that a common user task
was to see what events and programming
was available. A common first look for
users is searching for the closest
chronological events, so they belong on the
home page.
Featured Items
A rotating image banner that allows the
library to update features material,
programs, etc. at their discretion. As
different content is needed by users, it can
be easily accessible here.
Sign-up for News
A e-news signup widget that is more
quickly accessible than navigating to the
about>newsletters page. This is an often-
requested feature and should remain “out
front” permanently.
WIREFRAMES Home Page
Ask a Librarian
Library patrons have lots of questions, so
streamlining their ability to access the
feature was critical. The drop-down picklist
allows the user to save a step on the next
page by prepopulating with the correct
form.
Browse Featured Titles
Research indicated that patrons are often
looking for what to read next. Those users
often search for what is new or
recommended, so that material has been
pushed to the home page.
Connect to Wifi
A frequent need of users visiting the
library. Placing this information on the
home page saves users many flicks for a
very frequent task.
Find Library Events (Programs)
A programs database will standardize all group and event
information, which will allow for filtering and sorting.
This will make finding groups easier for all different kinds
of users.
Pay Fines (My Account)
Checking for and paying fines online was a recurring theme
in our research, thus making this information accessible
along with library activity and user info makes sense.
WIREFRAMES Pay Fines & Find Events
Access Third-party Databases (Research)
A programs database will standardize all group and event
information, which will allow for filtering and sorting.
This will make finding groups easier for all different kinds
of users.
Connect to Wifi (Resources)
While connecting to wifi is important and should be located
on the homepage for quick access, users also need the
information for future visits, thus the ability to have wifi info
sent directly to them has been added.
WIREFRAMES Wifi & Databases
Borrow Technology or Get Training (Resources)
To act on the desire to borrow or get technology training, each item
page will rely on the database to display information about the item,
show availability, and enable reservations for borrowing and training.
Find Available Technology (Resources)
A modern trend in library offerings in the ability to borrow technology
or get training on technology that’s not easily available in the home.
Here, the site will employ a database to standardize the items available
and allow for filtering and sorting.
WIREFRAMES Technology, Borrowing and Training
TESTING WIREFRAMES
Research Method: First Click Testing
What is First Click Testing
First click testing presents a study
participant with a wireframe and asks them
to complete a task. The tool then tracks the
users first-click, indicating the very first
place they would select to act on the task.
Why First Click Testing
To ensure that information architecture is
efficient, unfamiliar site users should have
high levels of success taking action to
complete a task. This test measures that
success rate by indicating “success areas”
(in green) and calculating success rates for
analysis.
FIRST CLICK TESTING, 5 PARTICIPANTS
Research Summary
1. You've been looking around the website and can't find what you are looking
for. How would you locate something you couldn't find by clicking around?
2. You're working on a historical fiction novel and need information about Western
Europe during the Renaissance. Where might you look to find that information?
3. There is a comet visible for the next couple of weeks and you want to see if a
telescope is available to use in your backyard. How would you look for that?
4. You forgot all about those rented DVDs your kids took to the basement and
owe the library some money. Where would take care of that on this page?
5. Before you take the telescope home, you decide you probably need help
learning how to use it. How would you go about that on this page?
Users Were Successful
Most tasks were completed successfully,
but users struggled with the testing
software, and many first questions were
missed as users got acquainted with how
the tool worked. An example scenario
would have prevented this situation and
will be included in future studies.

the tool, tasks results were
impacted based on the
