WAVES
WHAT IS A WAVE?
There are two important kinds of
waves:
• Light Waves
• Sound Waves
Important Characteristics of Light
✔ Travels very fast
✔ Does not need a medium
✔ Travels in straight lines
✔ Can be reflected and refracted
Light is a form of electromagnetic wave
LIGHT WAVES
Examples:
• Mirrors
• Calm water
• Shiny metals
Reflection happens when light bounces
off a surface.
LIGHT WAVES
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
Example:
A straw inside a glass of water
appears bent.
Refraction is the bending of light as it
passes through different materials.
LIGHT WAVES
REFRACTION OF LIGHT
Applications of Refraction
• Eyeglasses
• Cameras
• Magnifying glasses
• Microscopes
Light changes speed when traveling
through different media like air, water,
or glass.
WHY DOES
REFRACTION
HAPPEN?
SOUND WAVES
Sound is a mechanical wave.
This means sound needs a medium
such as:
• Air
• Water
• Solids
Sound cannot travel in outer space
because there are very few particles.
Pitch tells how HIGH or LOW a
sound is.
Examples:
• Whistle high pitch
→
• Drum low pitch
→
IMPORTANT PROPERTIES OF
SOUND
PITCH
Loudness depends on amplitude.
• Bigger amplitude = louder
sound
• Smaller amplitude = softer
sound
IMPORTANT PROPERTIES OF
SOUND
LOUDNESS
Echo happens when sound
reflects back after hitting a
surface.
• Examples:
⚬ Mountains
⚬ Empty rooms
⚬ Caves

• Communication
⚬ Cellphones
⚬ Radios
⚬ Television
⚬ Internet cables

GUIDED
QUESTIONS
Why can light
travel through
space while sound
cannot?
ANSWER
Light is an electromagnetic
wave that does not need a
medium to travel. Sound is a
mechanical wave that needs a
medium such as air, water, or
solids.
GUIDED
QUESTIONS
Why do we hear
echoes in large
empty places?
ANSWER
Echoes occur when sound
waves bounce off large
surfaces and return to our ears
after a short delay.
GUIDED
QUESTIONS
How do mirrors
help drivers?
ANSWER
Mirrors reflect light and allow
drivers to see vehicles, people,
and objects behind or beside
them, improving road safety.
ACTIVITY:
OBJECTIVE
Investigate the properties of light and sound
through observation of real objects and
identify their applications in everyday life.
LIGHT AND SOUND INVESTIGATION ROTATION
:
PROCEDURE
1.Each group receives one object
and an investigation sheet.
1.Groups carefully observe and
test their assigned object.
2.They answer the following
questions:
1.At the teacher's signal, each group
passes their object clockwise to the
next group.
2.Groups repeat the investigation
process until they have observed all
five objects.
