This study investigated cattle breeding preferences in three production systems in Burkina Faso. Farmers were surveyed about traits preferred for breeding bulls and cows. Across systems, size was the most important trait. The three systems were: 1) sedentary pure Baoulé cattle, 2) sedentary crossbreds, and 3) transhumant Zebu and crossbreds. Trait preferences varied between systems. Community-based breeding programs are being implemented to improve traits like size and trypanotolerance.
