Move It! Exploring Translational
and Rotational Motion
Performance Task in Physics
Standards
• Content Standard:
• • Understanding linear and angular quantities
to describe motion.
• Learning Competency:
• • Compare and contrast translational and
rotational motion in terms of their respective
linear and angular quantities.
Objective and Materials
• Objective:
• • Demonstrate the difference between
translational and rotational motion using
simple materials.
• Materials:
• • Toy car or box
• • Circular lid or cap
• • Ruler or measuring tape
Part A: Translational Motion
• 1. Mark a 1-meter track.
• 2. Push toy car in straight line.
• 3. Measure time with stopwatch.
• 4. Compute Speed = Distance / Time
Part B: Rotational Motion
• 1. Roll lid along 1-meter path.
• 2. Count full rotations and time.
• 3. Measure diameter → compute C = πd.
• 4. Compute θ = Distance / Radius.
• 5. Compute ω = θ / Time.
Sample Computation
• Translational Motion:
• • Distance = 1 m, Time = 2 s → Speed = 0.5
m/s
• Rotational Motion:
• • Diameter = 0.08 m → Radius = 0.04 m
• • θ = 1.0 / 0.04 = 25 rad
• • ω = 25 / 2.0 = 12.5 rad/s
Guide Questions
• 1. How did translational and rotational motion
differ?
• 2. What quantities describe each motion?
• 3. Did the rotating object also move forward?
• 4. Why is it useful to understand both
motions?
