Objectives: After this presentation students’ will be able to know; ♣ What is curriculum monitoring and evaluation? ♣ Concept of traditional and progressive curriculum. ♣ Differentiate between traditional and progressive notions of curriculum.
Monitoring: It means to monitor something or paying close attention. It is a type of systematic observation.
CurriculumMonitoring: A process of gathering information for evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum and ensuring that the intended, implemented and attained curricula are aligned.
Evaluation: The process of judging or calculating the quality, importance, amount or value of something.
CurriculumEvaluation: Curriculum evaluation refers to an ongoing process of collecting, analyzing, synthesizing, and interpreting information to aid in understanding what students know and can do.
 Process of Monitoring & Evaluation in the Curriculum:  The process should be open and shared.  The purpose of monitoring and evaluating should be clear to all involved.
Cont.…..  It should be seen as a supportive and developmental process, aimed at improving standards throughout the school.  The process should be manageable, rigorous and systematic in planning and target setting.
  It emphasize on remote learning.  Students’ memorize facts and formulas which are never ending.  Traditional curriculum is based on the permanent studies where the rule of grammar, reading, rhetoric, logic and mathematics for basic education emphasized.   It is learner-centered approach.  It is a factor of motivation in which individual achievement believing that persons are naturally good.  “Experiences in the classroom which are planned and enacted by the teacher, and also learned by the students”. (Marsh and Willis) Progressive Curriculum
Traditional Notions of Curriculum Progressive Notions of Curriculum Traditional schools focus on the teacher and what they teach. Progressive schools focus on the students and how they can learn. It emphasized on traditional method of teaching. It emphasized on improving teaching process. Feedback is shared annually. Feedback is shared continually.
Goals are static and do not change. Goals are flexible and aligned with the organization. A report card of past performance. Looks towards the future. Traditional elementary and middle schools emphasize formal activities. Progressive elementary schools utilize play-based projects to encourage learning. Learners are passive. Learners are active.
Parents are outsiders and uninvolved. Parents are the primary teachers, goal setters, and planners, and serve as resources. Community is separate from school, except for funding. Community is an extension of the classroom. School is a preparation for life. School is a part of life.
