Part 2: CSER reporting and KPIs
Learning objectives and outcomes of the module:
• ability to both create and critically analyse CSER reports
• ability to analyse the impact an organization has on the
environment and society using standardized KPIs and
templates.

What is CSER reporting?
• A corporate social and environmental responsibility report is an internal and external document
companies use to communicate their CSER efforts and their impact on the environment and
community.
• There exists a large variety of different reporting frameworks for CSER or sustainability
reporting. The reason is, that there does not yet exist a global common understanding on what
the CSER requirements for companies should be in general, and not all countries or regions
require reporting by law.
• On 21 April 2021, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Corporate Sustainability
Reporting Directive (CSRD) About Company Reporting. This will unify the reporting inside
European Union in the future.
• Furthermore, the EU taxonomy, a common classification system for sustainable activities, helps
companies, investors and policymakers

CSER/ sustainability reporting
• Get familiar with the following organizations / frameworks from their
web pages, compare and contrast and be ready to discuss them in
the group coaching session:
1. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Link to GRI, founded in 1997, is an independent,
international organisation that helps businesses and other organisations take responsibility for
their impacts by offering a framework for sustainability reporting.
1. The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Link to SASB, founded in 2011 in the US
as an independent standards-setting organisation, sets industry-specific sustainability disclosure
standards, intended to capture sustainability matters that are financially material.

• The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) Link to IIRC, a global non-profit organisation
founded in 2013, is a coalition of regulators, investors, companies, standard setters, the accounting
professionals, academics and NGOs. The coalition promotes communication on value creation as
part of corporate reporting. The IIRC's goal is to establish integrated reporting and thinking within
mainstream business practice as the norm in the public and private sectors.

CSER / sustainability reporting examples
• Please study CSER / sustainability reports by well known companies and
develop a table of contents for the use of (your) company’s CSER /
sustainability report. You can use the examples below or search other
reports according to your own interest.

Key performance indicators for CSER
• Each company should select suitable KPIs (key performance
indicators) to measure the corporate social and environmental
responsibility activities
• The KPIs should represent different perspectives of the
company’s CSER strategy
• The company should understand their current performance in
different KPIs and set challenging targets for the future

CSER / KPI examples
• Please study and analyse the example of Toshiba and consider
the strengths and weaknesses in it. You should also search for
another set of KPIs example (when you find one, please add
the link to our Dynamic Material Bank)
• Consider and plan which KPIs (your) company should use for
CSER performance measurement.

  • 2. CORPORATE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSER) Module 2, part 2 by Turku University of Applied Sciences 2
  • 3. Part 2: CSER reporting and KPIs Learning objectives and outcomes of the module: • ability to both create and critically analyse CSER reports • ability to analyse the impact an organization has on the environment and society using standardized KPIs and templates. 3

What is CSER reporting? • A corporate social and environmental responsibility report is an internal and external document companies use to communicate their CSER efforts and their impact on the environment and community. • There exists a large variety of different reporting frameworks for CSER or sustainability reporting. The reason is, that there does not yet exist a global common understanding on what the CSER requirements for companies should be in general, and not all countries or regions require reporting by law. • On 21 April 2021, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) About Company Reporting. This will unify the reporting inside European Union in the future. • Furthermore, the EU taxonomy, a common classification system for sustainable activities, helps companies, investors and policymakers 4

CSER/ sustainability reporting • Get familiar with the following organizations / frameworks from their web pages, compare and contrast and be ready to discuss them in the group coaching session: 1. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Link to GRI, founded in 1997, is an independent, international organisation that helps businesses and other organisations take responsibility for their impacts by offering a framework for sustainability reporting. 1. The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Link to SASB, founded in 2011 in the US as an independent standards-setting organisation, sets industry-specific sustainability disclosure standards, intended to capture sustainability matters that are financially material. 5
  • 6. … continues • The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) Link to IIRC, a global non-profit organisation founded in 2013, is a coalition of regulators, investors, companies, standard setters, the accounting professionals, academics and NGOs. The coalition promotes communication on value creation as part of corporate reporting. The IIRC's goal is to establish integrated reporting and thinking within mainstream business practice as the norm in the public and private sectors. • Other well-known organisations working in the field of sustainability reporting: • The Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) Link to CDSB • The CDP (the Carbon Disclosure Project) Link to CDP 6

CSER / sustainability reporting examples • Please study CSER / sustainability reports by well known companies and develop a table of contents for the use of (your) company’s CSER / sustainability report. Key performance indicators for CSER • Each company should select suitable KPIs (key performance indicators) to measure the corporate social and environmental responsibility activities • The KPIs should represent different perspectives of the company’s CSER strategy • The company should understand their current performance in different KPIs and set challenging targets for the future 8
  • 9. CSER / KPI examples • Please study and analyse the example of Toshiba and consider the strengths and weaknesses in it. You should also search for another set of KPIs example (when you find one, please add the link to our Dynamic Material Bank) • Consider and plan which KPIs (your) company should use for CSER performance measurement. • Link to Toshiba performance indicators 9
