D. Discussing New
Concepts and
Practicing New
Skills #1
Discussion of the lesson Discussion of the lesson
When looking at a source, ask
yourself the following questions.
Will this information be useful? ...
Will this information be added to my
knowledge? ...
What will I use this information for? ...
How recent is this information? ...
How reliable is this information? ...
How understandable is this
information? ...
How will I use this information?
Discussion of the lesson
How do you get information from
various sources?
Primarily you need to be aware of
where to look for information, how to
access it and how to use it. You must
also be able to scrutinize your sources
to check that they are relevant and of a
suitable nature to be included within
your work.
Below are the tips for getting
information.
• Look for the main idea – main idea is
the most important point of the topic. It
can be placed in the beginning of the
text, within the text, or even at the end.
• Next is gather the supporting details –
every idea is backed up by series of
supporting details. These details
answer your question that you have
about the topic.
• Look for facts – the easiest way to
identify the facts is to answer the
questions what, who, when, where,
how, and why.
Discussion of the lesson
How to identify reliable sources?
1. Authority: Who is the author? What
are their credentials? Do they have
knowledgeable experience in the field
they are writing about? What is their
reputation?
2. Accuracy: Compare the author’s
information to that which you already
know is reliable. Are there proper
citations? Is the information biased? If
so, does it affect research conclusions
3. Coverage: Is the information relevant
to your topic and does it meet your
needs? Consider what you need such
as statistics, charts, and graphs.
4. Currency: Is your topic constantly
evolving? Topics in technology and
medical innovation require sources that
are up to date.
Discussion of the lesson
What is Linear Text?
Linear text refers to traditional
text that needs to be read from
beginning to end. Here, the
reader makes sense of the text
according to the grammatical and
syntactic arrangement of the
words. Novels, poems, short
stories, letters, educational texts,
all those texts we read from the
beginning to the end, are linear
texts.
What is Non-linear Text?
Nonlinear text is the opposite of
linear text. As its name suggests,
it is nonlinear and non-
sequential. In other words, the
readers do not have to go
through the text in a sequential
manner in order to make sense
of the text. This type of text has
many reading paths since it’s the
readers who decide the
sequence of reading, not the
author of the text.
